Referring to the PWC schools and recruiting. I think it's a shame that these schools have the ability to go outside of their schools and pick athletes to build championship caliber teams. I know there are schools in Fairfax that do the same thing, but being able to put all-star talent on the same team is basically unfair and wrong to the sport. If you can't win with the kids that are supposed to go to your school, then you simply can't win.

If that's the case allow FCPS schools to have the same rules and let the games begin. Better coaching in FCPS, just can't recruit and that's the difference. If Woodbridge, Freedom (PW), or Hylton win a state title this year, they really need to look into why.

How is what is going on in PWC is any different than Loudon? In Loudon you can change school and provide your own transportation. PWC you can apply to the school specialty.

There are many others FFX school recruiting too. They either use fake address, rent apartments or a room (whatever provides the documentation needed).

It doesn’t matter whether it’s happening in FFX, PWC, or LC, it’s the wrong approach for HS athletics. Any coach who has communication with a player who is not currently attending his school should be punished severely. If a family moves to get to a better program that is their choice, but any coach who has discussions with the player or family before a kid is enrolled should be suspended for a least one year. I always feel bad for the kids who get put on the bench when the HS coach recruits over them. I think it undermines what HS sports are supposed to be about.
If the VHSL wanted to stop it they could quickly. All it takes is a few punishments and coaches would be scared of losing their jobs. Some states are very active in tracking down recruiting issues, Virginia is not.

Many schools recruit in Fairfax it just depends on where your looking. Centreville recruits for example. Oakton, back before Rowley and redistricting destroyed their program also used to have kids conveniently move in to the area to come and play for them. Perhaps the biggest school for recruiting is Madison H.S. Although it's much less prevalent in football, their baseball program is an absolute fraud year in and year out. The dirty recruiting practices that take place over there are well known throughout the area and I believe either 4 or 5 of their starters last year were not zoned to go there. It's a damn shame. Too bad Madison baseball can't win the big games, despite their cheating.
It also happens over in LC with SBHS. I wouldn't be shocked if they lost again.

While I appreciate you intent here, I think it is wrong to completely cut off players and their parents from coaches unless they are enrolled in that school. I know of a kid a few years back who's dad was military. The kid went to a different HS every year. He wasn't going to play in college, but was good enough to play HS football. When his parents started calling around to find a place where he might have chance to play his Sr. year, most coaches wouldn't even call them back because of this stupid rule. So that just screws a kid because of his fathers job. Is that fair or right? Of course not. What about situations where a kid has no chance of playing, for various reasons. Is that kid just supposed to happily sit the bench because he has the misfortune of playing behind a D1 kid, or is an inch too short, or the coach has known another kids family for years and has already, perhaps subconsciously, name the other kid a starter? All of you who say "HS coaches just put the best players on the field" either don't actually watch the games, have no ability to judge talent, or are the kids who played while better kids sat the bench. If you go to any local games, you see it all the time. Yes, some coaches are better than others at judging talent, but the coaches are human. They sometimes focus in on the wrong things. Although coaches should not be allowed to search out other kids, it is wrong to not allow kids to go seek out coaches for options. This is a rule designed to help lazy coaches keep kids at their school. It serves no other purpose, and is unjust to the kids.

I think the conversation here should roll back to where all were saying Coach Doc and his staff are the best in the state because he and they are. They're growing young men into gentlemen and student athletes into state champions. BRUIN NATION...clap clap clap. Finally, some order and pride in the program. Win or lose, this team is top notch on the life-o-meter. Winning is in their future and so is success long term. Boo-yah. One heart...and we all LOVE that heart.

Did anyone other than me notice the nasty, targeted playing done by some teams this year? Film and pictures show some really horrible facemasks that took weeks to get over plus there are broken bones and torn ACLs and such that were done to others. I question "it's just part of the game" when the best players are skimmed off the top because of injuries caused by teams going after great athletes. Play like that and live with it. Not my kid. Clean playing for us.

Oh, and I agree. Coach Doc and his staff are all that. If your kid isn't playing for them, I suggest you up and MOVE into Braddock territory. He's the real deal and the kids are on board now that they're done licking their wounds about change. It's all good and it's even GREAT. 1 2 3 FAMILY

Recruiting is happening in all the counties. But it is really showing in Eastern PWC this year. It's funny how they use parents and players to do the recruiting. Heck, the Freedom Coach runs a passing league that is a recruiting factory. Somebody said it in the earlier post, the big three in PWC are the biggest violators.

But ver rarely does a high school have teams with very few weaknesses without some sort of minor or major recruiting.

Its all good until they lose on Friday night to Woodbridge.
Then it will be back to Doc sucks and his whole staff including the DSA need to lose weight.

I will say it again, Doc inherited a loaded team the only team he has beaten is SoCO and they had a down year. The rest of the teams he should have crushed.
His staff hasn't proved anything, lets see how they do when they have to develop the talent.

Sorry, the Doc bandwagon comes to an end Friday night

I think this situation is a little different being that the kid comes from a military family and really can live or go to whatever schools they want. If the parents have the means to move a kid into an area so he can play football there so be it, but when coaches are actively running "camps" and "leagues" to recruit to notch players something has to be done.

The PWC schools are just recently entering the game, but the fact that three of them are in the region playoffs still definitely raises some questions. How does one go about figuring out these rules and regulations so we can make sure HS football stays competitive and honor the process of working hard and building players up, not recruiting all-star teams so we can win state championships. It's really just plain wrong!

This is wrong and if they win a state championship this year, it will cause lots of problems in this state athletically. Cheating to win should be punished, and PWC, LC, and some FCPS's should be punished for it. If a kid moves to an area okay, but coaches working camps and leagues to recruit players is sending the wrong message, and HS programs that are doing it right are going to suffer.

The state needs to get involved if a PWC school wins a state championship this year. It's hard to compete with recruiting.

Doc and company suck they almost lost to Oakton for crying out loud. Oakton ran the ball down their throat. If the had any defense they would have been beat and Oakton sucked. Braddock didn’t beat one solid team. Friday the truth comes out. He sucked at Woodson, couldn’t win the a load Stonewall team, and inherited a juggernaut that he almost ruined.

They are a family and he is committed to them like he was at Woodson, right?
Ask the Woodson players, they will tell you how committed he is.

Braddock's season ends on Friday night.

Braddock beats Woodbridge and loses the following week to Hylton. Westfield and Hylton for the state championship, and Westfield wins.

Coach Doc cant beat the good teams, that's been his MO for years.

This team was expected to contend for a state title or at least a deep run in the playoffs. This was a loaded LB team with 6-7 starters returning on offense and defense, including a very good returning QB and receivers and he still couldn't win with them. Next years team will not be as good talent wise, so look for a few down years for LB.I don't see this staff developing players very well.

These were good student athletes before doc got there, so talk all you want about how they are a family, doc did this and doc did that and all that non sense, if you don't win, no one cares about all that.

I'd rather walk away tonight than play dirty and rough like Woodbridge did tonight. Thugs aren't athletes. Well done, Coach Doc! You took a motley group of people and made them into men of character and class. Eight in a row after pulling these boys together in spite of themselves was no easy task.

Add in all that's happened at LB this week and CRAP! the coaching staff is really quite talented in keeping these boys focused!

Well done, Lake Braddock and Coach Doc!

I've been to Fairfax HS games for 30 years, the Woodbridge vs LB refs were the worst I have ever seen. Woodbridge held on the line repeatedly, their defense arm barred recievers right in front of refs, not once called. Dirty after the play stuff again right in front refs, nothing. Braddock had 3 chop block flags on pass plays LOL. Woodbridge Did Enough to win the game, but wow, refs were awful. My only complaint, LB receivers need to use two hands to catch balls and run their routes full speed all the way to the ball. This team does not have the talent they have had in the past. Whoever said they should be state contender are taking too many "trips" from colorado. The kids worked hard and so did the staff.

Yes I am, if I didn't, it would be an insult to the the previous players from previous years. Only game I will give you from previous staff is West Potomac. Darcy had some great passes last night, but he threw 2 crucial pics, and missed so many wide open recievers. He did however break the Virginia completion record for season. Coaches don't throw pics, and don't miss wide open recievers. LB lost their middle linebacker due to injury. 3rd quarter, 3rd TD came right up the middle

Much less talented? Eugene Asante is the most talented running back Westfield has had in a while, and Noah Kim might be the most talented QB that isn't a Glennon that they've ever had. They have 4 receivers that are getting serious play time for the first time this year and these guys have been great and will be even better next year. O-Line is big as usual and probably one of the best in the state. Defensive line is great, linebackers are loaded, and secondary is loaded, and special teams is not as great as it used to be but it is definitely a solid unit. Taylor Morin might be the best 2 way player in the state. This has always been a very talented team but it's the most inexperienced one we've seen in a long time for Westfield. They might not win states, and they might not even beat South Lakes, but to call them talentless is a big mistake.

Agreed on the RB. Kim is too erratic and throws up passes that, without the talented receivers of WF, would be prime pick targets. But he's still a sophomore and will be killer the next two years. Son played with him in SYA. He's got all the talent, just needs a bit more experience.

Westfield will win or lose with defense this year. Last night, their D was great. They made Patriot look like a practice squad.

YES, Coach Doc took that crew and made them into who they are... Bruin Family! 8 game winning streak! They might have lost last night but as athletes and as family with a great reputation in the building duting the day. Before, student athletes weren't disciplined nor focused on school performance.

Do these other schools have top, first string players taking AP courses a grade level ahead of their associated grade? No? I didn't think so.

Coach Doc made them who they are, that is true 8-4 and out of the playoffs. Why do you think they got pushed around last night against an aggressive Woodbridge team? Because they are soft that's why, they were intimidated and it showed.

This was a loaded team and this coaching staff did nothing with it. They had 8 wins this year all over teams they should have crushed and didn't btw. They had no signature wins this year to hang their hat on.

Talk all you want about family and good reputation, all that was there in the past, so this staff did nothing new. I know I played with them

Not true. 11th graders in AP Calculus? Nope. The thugs at Woodbridge are in remedial math and wreak havoc in the school building. I know, I played with them.

Muddy mess of a field at Hoodbridge. Too much going on at Braddock for anyone to function this week. Press and protests going on and a beloved teacher wronged. Injuries that ended the season and for several who were on the verge of returning but not quite. Add in shitty refs and away game in the freezing cold and Braddock was no match for the thugs they played. Cheerleaders didn't cheer, parents did. Minimal band so there was little crowd support. Add that up and no one could get the timing right under all those conditions. Stop dissing my team and appreciate them for doing amazing things! So they lost. Many teams didn't play at all after the season was over. Bruins are FAMILY.

Question for LB fans: What is your coaching staffs plans for the next time they run into a PWC school in the playoffs? Those schools will always have better athletes and be able to play man to man coverage and blitz you to death. The lack of a running game and any misdirection gives them issues against those teams. They can win the district that way but difficult to beat the hylton, freedom, Woodbridge type teams st their own game.

Westfield is playing together as a team as well as they ever have. Sometimes it is almost better to not have as many next level prima donnas. Morin has had an amazing season but I would vote that Cockrill is a better two-way player. His performance versus Centreville was probably the best game any Westfield player has had this season.

Second, a lot has been written about Hylton and Slade but seems like Woodbridge has been overlooked, not much about them, who are their top players and who wins this rematch?

So proud of LB football and the season that they had, 8 straight wins and so many highlights to last a lifetime.

This staff did a great job in rebuilding a program that was a total mess.
They fought through injuries, adversity to become one of the top teams in the area. More importantly, they became a family, something that was missing in the years past. They had a record number of all conference players on offense and defense as well as the player of the year on Offense and Defense and conference coach of the year. This truly was a family

As the seniors go on to other things, knowing that they were the start of something big at LB. The underclassmen will begin to work towards another successful season.

My son played for coach Doc all season and got serious playing time. He loved Coach doc. Yes this team was loaded and it was a damn shame they didn’t do more with it, but the truth of it was that without the offensive line they’ve had in years past, and a stud RB (too 2 guys got hurt) it wasn’t gonna be easy to run the ball at all. I think to be honest, next year will have similar results. But I’m okay with it. 9-3 next season, back to back conference champs, and at least a playoff win if not more. The staff will have a full offseason and that will make a difference next year.

What? 44-8 the previous 4 years. 2 playoff victories for 4 straight years. How is that a total mess? What exactly needed "rebuilding?" Praise Coach D all you want but no need to trash the program - it was a top 5 program in NOVA.

That said, who did the worst job coaching in all FCPS. My vote is for the South County staff. Loaded top to bottom they went 5 and 6. Remember, you are what your record says you are!

Rounding out top 3 would be Mt Vernon, early interviews he was bragging about how his offense scores too fast and too many points, how’d that work out for you when you weren’t playing crappy teams from Arlington...?

Then there is CVHS, Haddock boasting in the preseason how this team was as good as his state title contending teams. Really? Which part? Those teams didn’t lose 3 games during the regular season.

South Lakes doesn't show up to play. Blames it on 'bus problems'. The team is found later Friday night eating at IHOP and high-fiving that they didn't lose to Westfield. Westfield is given state title by default after Hylton and Woodbridge players pull guns on the field and kill each other off and Oscar Smith's coach holds a press conference saying only, 'No Mas' before walking off the podium clutching a picture of Coach Simmons in one hand and a bottle of Jack Daniels in the other.

Woodbridge over Hylton. Woodbridge is a more complete team. Not gonna beat the bridge with 1 RB. Just not gonna happen.

South Lakes over Westfield. South Lakes will be ready this time. Any team that can beat Madison 35-0 has to be the favorite. That was impressive.

SL played 4-6 Woodson, 6-5 Fall Church, 2-8 Oakton, 7-4 Dominion, 8-3 Centreville, 2-8 Langley, 2-8 W&L, 0-10 McLean, 8-3 Yorktown, 4-6 Herndon. Then beat 2 8-3 teams in the playoffs. They've played 6 teams in the regular season with losing records, including 4 who have a combined 6 wins. Their stats look impressive on yards, scoring and defense, but they've been playing a lot of patsies. The Bulldogs are going the be the best team they've faced by far this season. Westfield dismantled Patriot last week and Patriot could hang and possibly beat SL. Saturday is going to be a reckoning for the Seahawks.

Prediction: Westfield feasts on Seahawk for Thanksgiving 27 - 10.

MHS lack of inside power running game combined with some bad play calling (coach had the big game jitters/nerves)did them in, eventually that will wear out the defense. MHS will fall back to the pack next year and don’t be surprised if Oakton & Chantilly beat them.

Madison beat Centreville straight up in a playoff slugfest. South Lakes scored exactly 25 more points against Madison than Westfield did. Better offense and defenses about the same. It's going to be a long day for the Dogs. We all saw what Chantilly yes Chantilly did when they deicided to run on Westfield. Two 9 minute drives by an 0-10 team on the Dogs. They can't stop a determined run and South Lakes is 10X the team Chantilly was.

When Westfield played Madison the Bulldogs fumbled at Madison's 1 yeard line. It wasn't really a fumble since the TE's knee was down but that's what the refs called. Then with less than 2 minutes left WF was inside Madison's 15 with 4th and 1, they got cute and ran a pitch, lost yardage. It was 10-6 but make no mistake, WF should have put more points on the board.

South Lakes is small on both sides of the line of scrimmage, WF is not. South Lakes had the size last year at OL and still couldn't do much. The offense of WF is just as potent as South Lakes, the Bulldogs defense is better than the Seahawks.

As the previous poster suggested, South Lakes schedule has been very soft, they have not faced a team as good or complete as Westfield. The closest would have been Centreville, how'd that go for them?

Everyone's been wishing for Westfield to stumble, maybe they do this week. But since this is their 7th Region appearance I think it will take a perfect game by South Lakes and miscues by Westfield for the Seahawks to win.

Oh yeah, Chantilly scored a total of 7 points, that's it. Westfield can stop the run, so don't think they can't. Just look at what they did to Centreville and Patriot, both whom have a tremendous run game.

South Lakes broke out some new offensive guys against Madison, and they were impressive. Madison outperformed their talent level all year, nice coaching job-but once they punched in the mouth on Friday you could see they weren't coming back. For SLHS, Dagbe has been excellent on defense, betting they use him more offensively this week. Alston is really good as a receiver, and a good running back, Mensah is a beast inside, and Miles is a plus QB who has good wheels and instincts (nobody seemed to notice that he went 19/23 last week and has been good all year) The problem against WF is going to be the line play and covering quality receivers. Defensively I just don't think they can keep up with Westfield's offense. Westfield has a quality QB, good and sizable receivers and they will have time to dissect the defense. South Lakes plays a few guys both ways, and will likely do more of that this week. Against a big, pounding team I think that will come back to haunt them late. Westfield in a close game. I don't know shit about the other game, but I'll take Woodbridge by 2 touchdowns based on the numbers.

Being a program where good players want to play is not recruiting. Madison baseball is a great program, it produces quality players, and they play quality opponents. That kids want to play there and families move to be in that district is a compliment. South Lakes players routinely gamed the system to get to South Lakes when their own program was in disarray--good for themm. The kids from South Lakes no longer figure out how to get to Madison now that they have their own good program. (Run by a Madison alum BTW) You are talking out of your ass unless you have some proof. So back up your words with more than sour grape rumors or stop maligning good teachers and coaches who run an excellent program.

Exactly! WF was giving up yards for time. They had the game already won in a blowout and figured if the idiots on the other side of the ball want to run off 8 minute drives 3 or 4 yards at a time, it just shortens the clock stoppages and gets everyone off the field. WF shut Chantilly completely down on offense in the first half before they got 40 points ahead.

True, but speaking for many of us we watch film/Hudl, so we have a good grasp of what we're talking about.

Saying SL had a weak schedule is just stating the facts. No one is blaming them for playing a bunch of patsies and winning against them. SL has speed and is a good team. But their players are smaller than Westfield's and Simmons is, hands down, the best coach in the region and one of the best in Va. Advantage WF.

The same could be said about WF and Oscar Smith. WF was smaller and a bit slower than the big boyz from the hood down there, but missed plays by Smith and cagey coaching by Simmons was the difference. That's what will have to happen on Saturday for the Seahawks to win. The Bulldogs will have to have an off game and SL will have to play a great game. It happens all the time so....

But don't count on it.

Finally some commentary that makes sense. I agree that Westfield has to be a slight favorite. But if they muck things up like Madison did they will find out very quickly they have dug themselves a hole they can't get out of. South Lakes is an awesome football team more than capable of pulling off an upset. I am hoping for a great game with some lead changes. These blowouts in regional championship games get kind of old.

Simmons stiffy, six head coaches because one not good enough, bigger stiffy, Westfield dixie cupping after the win, biggest stiffy. Heading to buy the KY Jelly now.

Tuscarora 21 Stone Bridge 7 at the half. Coach Thompson up to his usual tricks. Went for it on 4th down his first two possession and failed. Second time inside his own 20. What an ass.

Yeah, only a Mickey Thompson coached team could choke away a game like this. Good for Tusky! Stone Bridge wastes another year of superior talent.

Westfield shuts down South Lakes with a convincing 27 - 7 spanking.

Westfield made a lot of mistakes today. That they could secure such a decisive victory with all the screw-ups is instructive.

So just like every other year, Westfield got better as the season progressed. Although they didn't seem it the first part of the season, these last few weeks they've definitely been the most dominant team in the state. I was expecting a much closer game against South Lakes, but anyone who was at the game will tell you that Westfield had a couple of fuck ups and the game was more lopsided than the score indicated. They weren't as dominant at the start of the season not due to talent but due to inexperience. They shut down 2 ferocious running backs today and had a decent amount of success against a great defensive team. I might be wrong but if it weren't for a special teams blunder I think this game would've been a shutout.

So, let's hear it! Westfield vs Woodbridge, who wins & why?

Westfield I'd think is likely the favorite, right? Even with all things equal, their coaches ability to game plan and adapt in the second half would give them the edge. And unless there were some key injuries from their game against SL, the Bulldogs should be headed back to Hampton again.

I hope Westfield wins but make no mistake, Woodbridge is very talented. They have a big, fast front 7 on defense, give up less than 10 points a game and help Ricky Slade to 36 yards on 12 carries. Slade is probably one of the best RB's in the state, if not the best. Woodbridge on offense also has a big O-line, all skill players are very fast. This will probably be the best team Westfield has seen all season with the exception of the Dematha scrimmage.

I’ll take in Westfield in a close one. The game will probably be a very low scoring game because both squads have very stout defenses (particularly rush defenses). Westfield will win mainly because of their playoff experience and excellent coaching staff. Woodbridge is a very talented team, but I’m unsure if they can pull of an upset.

P.S. would be nice to see Oscar smith vs Westfield for the third time.

That would be really Great. Those games were real battles & Smith has put in a new Offensive scheme for those 1st & Goal plays they needed in those failed OT tries. I'm sure Westfield would be happy to see Smith without Shon Mitchell playing, too.

Smith is playing the underdog role against Colonial Forge and they have to travel up to Stafford for their game Saturday.

LB got eliminated in the 2nd round, which is one week earlier than their annual 3rd round exit. Shut up LB isn’t doing shit anytime soon.

Eliminated in the 2nd round!!! All of those all region players on LB and that's the best Doc and staff could do?

Name 1 signature win that LB had this year..... No wins against playoff teams or quality opponents .....SoCo had a down year.

I wouldn't be bragging about being the best staff in the state with those results.

Doc and staff had a ok year with superior talent and they didn't even develop that, they inherited it, from the previous staff.

Westfield is the best staff in the state, don't ever forget that

Look at the mess Doc inherited yet he was still able to develop and churn out all these top players. It’s only been 1 season expect more and bigger things after LB has had a chance in his full off season to develop not put out fires and patch things back together.
How many all region players does WHS have, won’t be as much as Docs incredible team!
