Lake Braddock will be fine, even if they end up 0-3. Westfield is Westfield and West Po is much better than expected. The Bruins lost a lot on their ground game obviously but they will shred most defenses with their passing attack.

This LB staff doesn't know how to win against the good teams. They have no track record, so until the staff finds a way to win against good teams, they will always be an average team with exceptional talent. A 5-5 or 6-4 record is not acceptable at a school like LB when they have all of the talent right there.

A good coaching staff finds a way to win against good teams. No way they should ever go 0-2, 0-3 with the talent they have. Even Westfield was surprised at the talent on this LB team

This team had the talent to win 8-9 games and make a deep run into the playoffs, sorry to say, the coaching staff is holding them back.

Will be most interesting to see results of:

Annandale (2-0) at James Robinson (1-1)
- Falls Church (1-1) at Mount Vernon (2-0)
- T.C. Williams (2-0) at Tuscarora (1-1)

If Annandale can hang with Robinson, Mount Vernon puts a beat-down on FC and TCW can be competitive with Tusky that would be something.

Tusky and Robo will dominate and the games will be over by halftime.
Their line play on both sides of the ball is far superior to their opponents.
FC vs MTV will be interesting, but it's hard for me to believe that a team that got killed by SL will be able to beat anyone above average. I'm just not sure MTV is above average yet.

Interesting will be:

- Falls Church (1-1) at Mount Vernon (2-0) Points, lots of points...
- James Madison (2-0) at West Potomac (2-0) First real test
- South County (1-1) at Centreville (1-1) Which Centreville team will show up?
- Stone Bridge (1-0) at Lake Braddock (0-2) ...and the LB saga continues...

Why don't you fine folks shut up about Lake Braddock and move on to verbally abusing some other poor souls. You are all so powerful with your fat ass sitting behind your computers mouthing off. You'd run off like little girls if you were confronted face to face.
Are you too stupid to realize it's some troll egging you on. The LB coaching staff has kept their mouths shut and some idiot looking for confrontation is having a good time typing and drinking their Shlitz.
Move on and enjoy the football season.

dear LB parent/A-hole

Here are the facts:
LB sucks
Record will be 0-3 after they get drubbed 20 points or more by Stone Bridge
The program is based on cheats and karma has now caught up with them.
LB allows "athletes" in all sports who live outside the school boundary to attend LB

You should start your counseling on how to be a loser now.

As a parent of a kid who was "recruited" buy other schools in Fairfax County, I can tell you you are way over blowing the situation at LB.

Even when the school wants a kid to come play, they still have to follow FCPS pupil placement rules and get approval from the county. You can't just show up at another school and enroll.

If it is discovered a student is using a false address to attend another school, the county will make the school forfeit all of the games in which that student participated. Coaches are so watchful of the transfer issue, not many are willing to take that chance. They want the kids legally in their school.

Pupil placement transfers are also subject to space availability at the school they are trying to move into. So when a kid outside the boundaries wants to move into a school, the county looks at the capacity of the gaining school. LB is usually between 97 and 100% capacity. If they are moving from a school closer to 90%, they are probably not going to get approved.

So you left with the kids whose parents are willing (and financially capable) of picking up and moving across the county for their kid to play HS sports. That's a pretty small number.

The bulk of how one school (LB), gets so many good athletes is when their parents are moving into the district, they search out the schools that will be best for their kid. If they are football players, that most often will be LB or SoCo. (Westfield may be too far out for some parents, although I will concede the greatness of their coaching staff). Poythress was very good about ensuring incoming kids got to LB. He made them feel wanted. Other schools don't want kids from the outside, as they feel its not fair to kids who have been in their program for several years. So LB ends up with kids who care more about football and are more dedicated. It's a simple as that.

For the record, my son did not end up going to LB. We had to move, which was okay, as we went from renting to buying a house. My son had a really good HS experience and we were very lucky. Coach P was really nice to us,and always friendly to my son after their games. So no hard feelings.

Last I heard, the Class 6 directors were still debating the fate of Regions C and D here in the North. I heard they intended to combine both regions into a massive sixteen-team single-elimination tournament for the region playoff. For comparison, nearly all other regions around the state have standard eight-team playoffs for each region. Have there been any official updates? If not, I will be posting results from now on as a 16-team playoff.

VHSL has really dropped the ball on this one.

Predictions...

- Annandale (2-0) at James Robinson (1-1)
First time these two have met since 2004. Robinson should win this one going away.

- Capital Christian (0-1) at Thomas Jefferson (0-1)
Know NOTHING about Capital Christian. But DO know TJ has lost 34 games in a row.

- Fairfax (1-1) at Robert E. Lee (0-2)
Fairfax should have enough to send Lee to 0-3.

- Falls Church (1-1) at Mount Vernon (2-0)
Predict a Mount Vernon upset here. Or would it really be an upset?

- Herndon (1-0) at Chantilly (0-2)
Coach Curry gets his first win at Chantilly.

- James Madison (2-0) at West Potomac (2-0)
Madison is very physical team. Defense will slow WP down.

- J.E.B. Stuart (0-1) at Park View (0-2)
Both teams looking for what may be their only win of the season.

- Langley (0-2) at W.T. Woodson (0-2)
Woodson because they are at home?

- South County (1-1) at Centreville (1-1)
Expecting a close game. Centreville has room for improvement. Don't forget they took down heavily favored Lake Braddock & Lamont Atkins early in the season last year.

- South Lakes (2-0) at Oakton (0-2)
A blowout. Oakton just ain't what they used to be.

- Stone Bridge (1-0) at Lake Braddock (0-2)
Hard to believe LB starts 0-3.

- T.C. Williams (2-0) at Tuscarora (1-1)
TCW has been known to surprise teams on occasion. Perhaps they give the Huskies a game?

- Washington-Lee (0-1) at West Springfield (2-0)
W-L has never beaten WS (0-5)

- Yorktown (2-0) at Wakefield (1-0)
Coin flip says Yorktown.

Seems like more evenly matched games this week.

- Annandale (2-0) at James Robinson (1-1)
Hard to go with Annandale after a disappointing season last year.

- Capitol Christian (0-1) at Thomas Jefferson (0-1)
Capitol Christian might show up with 50 players and a full cheerleading squad, they might show up with 12 players, half of whom are foreign basketball recruits who have never played football before, they might realize they've scheduled three games for the same day and not show up at all. TJ"s lost so many games in a row that I can't pick them but it's not out of the question for them to win this.

- Fairfax (1-1) at Robert E. Lee (0-2)
Lee was competitive against West Springfield but Fairfax actually posts their stats in the Post website so I'll go with them.

- Falls Church (1-1) at Mount Vernon (2-0)
MV will score too much to lose to Falls Church.

- Herndon (1-0) at Chantilly (0-2)
Coin toss, I'll pick the team that's actually a won a game.

- James Madison (2-0) at West Potomac (2-0)
Playoff rematch, West Pot had the quality win last week so they get the nod here. We'll learn a lot about both teams.

- J.E.B. Stuart (0-1) at Park View (0-2)
Park View should be playing TJ.

- Langley (0-2) at W.T. Woodson (0-2)
Langley showed signs of life last week.

- South County (1-1) at Centreville (1-1)
Probably just anti-LoCo bias speaking, but if Centreville couldn't stop one kid from John Champe how are they going to stop South County?

- South Lakes (2-0) at Oakton (0-2)
I guess South Lakes got all of Oakton's football talent in the redistricting.

- Stone Bridge (1-0) at Lake Braddock (0-2)
LB had plenty of chances against West Potomac last week, but they don't really have any of the standout players they've had in recent years.

- T.C. Williams (2-0) at Tuscarora (1-1)
Has TC ever played a team from Loudoun County before? They've played two potential 0-10 teams the first two weeks. Tuscarora not the same team they were a few years ago, could go either way.

- Washington-Lee (0-1) at West Springfield (2-0)
Once W-L's enrollment hits 5,000 they'll have a decent football team. West Springfield bouncing back after being perhaps the most disappointing team in the area last year.

- Yorktown (2-0) at Wakefield (1-0)
Yorktown is actually only 1-0, but they're 21-0 in their last 21 games against Wakefield, so there's only one way to pick.

They are a VHSL member, but ineligible for playoff consideration in football.

And asking a school like TJ-A to compete in 5a in football is asking a lot. Besides, I'm not sure the ego's of the kids on one of the big time 5a schools could handle it if a nerdy little brainy kid from TJ got in a pancake block!

Correct. TJ's only official game was against George Mason.

Your bad info is that Millbrook played Jefferson, West Virginia NOT TJ-Alexandria.

Chantilly 0 - Herndon 0 at the half. Oh, the humanity.

Chantilly has 0 first downs and lost yardage on EVERY possession except for 1. Against Herndon. Herndon had probably 75% of their snaps on the Chantilly side of the field but never came close to scoring. I think they had 2 first downs.

Mark it down here: Chantilly goes 0-10 if they don't somehow get a miracle win here.

Centreville with a bounce back win. Champe must be for real?

Centreville and South County squared off in what was a pretty good game, with Centreville building a 10 point lead in the second quarter, falling behind in the third quarter before retaking the lead, then holding off South County to win 31-27.

Centreville received the ball first on their own 20 yard line. On the very first play, the QB handed the ball to a RB, who handed it off to the WR in what looked like a reverse. But then the WR flipped the ball back to the QB who had a wide open player down the middle of the field-but the pass was off and the receiver could not haul in the pass for what would have been a sure TD. CV then punted three plays later and SC took over on the CV 48 yard line. Unable to move the ball, SC punted and pinned CV on their own 1 yard line. SC's Dunn intercepted QB Egbers several plays later and SC had the ball back on their own 43 yard line, but a Tull fumble was recovered by CV on the SC 34 yard line. CV completed this drive with a 24 yard run by Kanu and went ahead 7-0 (Greer XP) with 2:30 to play in the first quarter. SC then put together a quick 80 yard drive to tie the score at 7-7 (Arquette XP) on a 3 yard run by Spalding at the 11:32 mark of the second quarter. CV immediately answered with an 80 yard drive of their own, capped by a 1 yard Kanu TD run at the 5:52 mark to put CV ahead 14-7. After a SC punt, CV drove from their own 19 yard line to face a 4th and goal at the SC 2 yard line, where they elected to go for a 17 yard FG, which Greer hit, to go into the half leading 17-7.

SC started the second half on their 35 yard line and had to punt. CV then returned the favor, giving SC the ball on their own 37 yard line. On the first play of this possession SC's Tull went 63 yards on a QB keeper and pulled SC to within 17-13 (Arquette's XP missed). CV again went three and out, giving SC the ball back on the SC 44 yard line. SC went on to score again, this time on a 4th and 1 from the CV 2 yard line when Spalding ran it in the 2 yards and put SC ahead, 21-17 (Tillard 2XP) with 1:57 to play in the 3rd quarter. CV would immediately answer, using a one play, 77 yard run by Wright to jump back in front, 24-21 (Greer XP) with 1:35 left in the third quarter. SC's next possession was a three and out, giving CV the ball on their own 43 yard line. A few plays later CV's Kanu went 44 yards up the middle and CV extended their lead to 31-21 (Greer XP) with 7:45 remaining in the game. SC again went three and out, as did CV. With 3:36 left and trailing by 10 points, SC started on their own 37 yard line and marched 63 yards, capping the drive with a Tull 1 yard run to pull within 31-27 (XP missed on a bad snap) with 2:23 to play. SC tried an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff and a CV player touched the ball and it was recovered by SC at the SC 48 yard line with just over two minutes to play. SC got a Tull run to the CV 46, then a penalty on CV pushed the ball to the CV 41. CV's defense then broke through on the next play and sacked Tull at the SC 49 yard line, but two plays later CV's Maxwell intercepted Tull and CV was able to run out the clock to win 31-27

Once they overcame a bunch dumb penalties in the 1Q, Madison ran it right down West Po's throat. West Po's 2 scores were two long bombs; otherwise the defense was stout.

The Washington Post has an article today about the Madison/West Potomac game. You can read it online here:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/spor...4b862b2b3f3_story.html?utm_term=.6a9510c5f3d5

"Madison eventually finds its footing in 38-16 win over West Potomac"

By Dillon Mullan September 8 at 10:54 PM

West Potomac built early momentum with a long touchdown pass and an interception in the end zone, but its model for success was not sustainable Friday night.

On the visiting bench, Madison was not quite revving from the opening whistle. Its running game needed time to find its top gear, but once it did, there was no stopping the Warhawks.

Madison absorbed a few big plays and kept churning for a dominant 38-16 road win over the Wolverines.

“We knew we were going to come out here and dominate on both sides of the ball,” Warhawks senior offensive lineman Sammy Junco said. “We took a few series to get going but in the end there was no stopping us.”

No. 12 West Potomac (2-1) grabbed its only lead in the final minute of the first quarter when senior quarterback Tanner Jones stepped up in the pocket and hit senior wide receiver Nigel Okunubi in stride for a 63-yard score.

No. 15 Madison (3-0) drove to the Wolverines’ 11-yard line on the ensuing drive, but West Potomac sophomore Micah McDonald read Madison senior quarterback John Cothran’s eyes and intercepted his pass in the end zone.

Madison wasn’t done making mistakes. On its next drive, the Warhawks committed five penalties but still managed to advance into the red zone.

On third down, senior running back Casey Koshuta took a pitch to the right and pulled up short of the line of scrimmage and delivered a short touchdown toss to junior wide receiver John Finney as Madison took the lead into halftime.

After the break, the 6-foot-1, 215-pound Koshuta didn’t need any tricks. He carried the ball 21 times for 105 yards in the second half to finish with 176 yards on 37 carries.

As West Potomac’s defense showed signs of fatigue in the later stages of the game, Madison’s seized the opportunity.

“This is what those offseason workouts are all about, being ready to come out here and dominate,” Koshuta said. “We preach adversity, we knew this game was going to be hard, but that’s what this season is about — fighting through adversity.”

West Potomac avoided a blowout thanks to another deep ball from Jones. This time senior DeAndre Webb ran away from the secondary for an 86-yard touchdown that cut Madison’s lead to 31-16 with 11 minutes to play.

“I knew from the beginning that we would have opportunities for shots,” Jones said. “But we got to stay together for the whole game on every drive. We can’t have players branching off a little bit and trying to do their own thing.”

Fittingly, Koshuta sealed the victory by running over several Wolverines to score his second touchdown of the game with four minutes left.

After three impressive wins, Madison will travel to Ashburn to take on No. 7 Stone Bridge (2-0) next Friday.

It would only be bizarre if it stayed that way. Lb and SC have played westfields and cvilles, and Westpos and stone bridges

the teams at the top of the patriot right now have not ... they have their tough games later

Article captures the game pretty well.

Madison ran it right at the West Potomac defense most of the night, 4, 5, 7 yards a shot for the most part w/ Casey Koshuta (and Brandon Walker). More run heavy than usual with a few key passing plays, partly because West Potomac's line had good drive into and collapsed the pocket a few times early in the game. The Madison drive to make 10-8 at the end of the half was 7:20 long (even w/ a bunch of dumb penalties). They went to their #2 QB (Patrick Berry) in the second half after their starter (John Cothran) tweeked his ankle on a run option during that drive...didn't slow them down.

West Po's run/pass option offense had a few moments, but whatever their blocking scheme, Madison kept penetrating. The Wolverines did as well as they did by individual athleticism more so than scheme, coaching or conditioning (IMO).

Madison is @ Stone Bridge next week...that will be very interesting. The Warhawk's toughest games are all away this season including South County, Westfield and Centreville later in the season.

Excellent game summary as always. It's getting to be some kind of syndrome for SouthCo, that they play tough, close games but seem just fall short.

Any thoughts about what's missing for them?

This is correct. Fairfax's two wins are against McLean and Lee. They have Hayfield this week, which should be a loss. The game the following week against Annandale will be more revealing as to what kind of team they have this year.

To be honest, I am not that educated in the intricate schemes and tactics required to analyze a football team well. But I have found over the years that I can see some scores, watch a few games, and then be quite accurate as to which teams are the better ones. That said, I expected a SC win last night based on the egg that CV laid last week against Champe, but I think the CV loss last week was just a bad game after I saw them in person last night. The CV running game was certainly able to exploit the SC defense with its speed and quickness, but the most important factor was that CV's #13, Anunay, played exceptional defense on Spalding. He tipped away the first three passes thrown to Spalding and was only beat on two pass plays all night, limiting Spalding to just 3-4 catches. Spalding's ability just kills most teams so the defense of Anunay was the deciding factor, IMO. When SC had the ball on their last drive with about 2 mins to go I thought they might pull it out since they marched right down the field on CV the previous drive using their bread and butter, the passing game. But when Tull did not/could not throw the ball away and was sacked near midfield, that was huge as far as a single play in the game. The Maxwell kid for CV then made a great read and got the INT that sealed the win.

I agree about Stone Bridge being really good. Where'd they get all the new "athletes"? I don't remember seeing all these kids last year. The coach is a great recruiter.

Stone Bridge is definitely a state champion in recruiting. Every year they bring in at least 2-3 impact kids from other schools.

Just a heads up Chantilly football has 10 sophomores starting on the Varsity this year so the future SHOULD BE bright, the present is a brutal reality that the current senior class and current junior class drew a line in the sand with the 'old' staff and this is the direct result of their dumb decision to do nothing football related for years, the 10th graders will get better each week BUT the schedule makers did Chantilly no favors as well, suffer and lose now to have a chance to climb out of the basement later!

Your youth feeder league is awful and what little talent you do get you can't keep cuz they get tired of losing and parents move to CVHS or WHS district or the kid(s) are knuckleheads and get in trouble and wind up at Mt View.

I do like your optimism, you must be a coach or have a kid at CHS but let's be real, your bad unathletic sophomores will become bad somewhat athletic seniors which will be good for 3-4 wins.

Can a head coach change really make that much difference? They got a LOT of hype last year and fell flat. And they lost a good bit of talent from last year.

Compare last seasons TC or Mt Vernon teams to the season before and tell me if a coaching change makes a difference.

Here is a repost of the picks from Steve K2 for the games this week.

Dominion @ South Lakes (-30.0)

Forest Park @ Centreville (-24.0)

Hayfield (-35.0) @ Fairfax

Herndon (-15.0) @ Marshall
*This will really be a measuring stick for the Concorde, if this is a close game which is very possible… The once mighty concorde is no more.

Jefferson (-3.0) @ Manassas Park
*If Jefferson is going to win their first game in years it’s this Friday playing a winless team outscored 119-0. This one can go either way.

Lee @ Stuart (-6.0): This one will be close.

Madison @ Stone Bridge (-7.0)
*Game of the Week

McLean (-1.0) @ Edison

Mount Vernon (-35.0) @ Washington-Lee

Potomac Falls (-10.0) @ Langley

Woodson @ Yorktown (-21.0)

West Potomac (-28.0) @ Chantilly

Westfield (-29.0) @ Stonewall Jackson

Robinson (-7.0) @ TC Williams

- Agreed. This is the GAME of the week. I really like Madison, many thought that they wouldn't stand a chance in the Concorde but they have a legit shot at winning the Concorde district (either them, Cville or Westfield will win it). However, my gut tells me Stone Bridge will win.

Hard one to pick. Two polar opposite teams, in terms of style of play; Robinson is a very physical team and TC is highly athletic. Flip coin says Robo.

It simply says Centreville's Defensive Coordinator knows what every other Coordinator should know, You press Spalding and provide Safety help over the Top. Westfield Chose to stay in Zone most of the night allowing Spalding to catch a ball underneath and run through several Arm Tackles. Very few HS QB's are afforded more than 3 seconds in the pocket if you as a defense can hold up/ disrupt the receivers route(s) for even 1.5 seconds the Reads change dramatically and with one or two exceptions most QB's at this level are lucky to get to their second read before tucking and running or getting Sacked. Westfield utilized that Template to great success the Previous year when Joey Free had as many interceptions as Spalding had catches in their 2 Matchups. We all know Spalding is going to get his, it doesn't mean Teams should pad his stats by refusing to implement the demonstrated scheme that Works. #13 for Centreville did a great job and battled all night. There are several more Langleys on South County's schedule so Tull and Spalding will have ample opportunity to exploit overmatched Defenses.

...from Washington Post AllMetSports High school football notebook:

MADISON QB OUT 2-3 WEEKS

Warhawks senior quarterback John Cothran left Madison’s win over West Potomac last week with a knee injury the team feared could be season-ending. Instead doctors told Cothran he’ll likely miss two to three weeks, he told the Post. He’s set to get an MRI Friday to confirm there are no ligament tears.

The No. 12 Warhawks face No. 7 Stone Bridge on Friday in Ashburn.

That makes him potentially available for the South County game on the 28th...more likely for Westfield the following week. We'll see if Patrick Berry can continue to run the office at a high level in the face of the Stone Bridge defense...

who is playing quarterback for Madison. They have no shot of going into Ashburn and winning this year. And for those that think the outcome will have more to do with the injury, remember that Stone Bridge's best player is out for the year already.

Sorry, Fairfax fans. Biggest game of the year this year will be 9-0 Broad Run travelling to face 9-0 Stone Bridge for Potomac District title in Loudoun County.

CENTREVILLE HEEDS WAKE-UP CALL AFTER LOSS TO CHAMPE

Maybe all it took for Centreville to play its best football was a 28-21 loss to Champe in Week 1. The following Friday, the Stallions rode two 100-yard rushers to a bounce-back win over South County.

“We kind of got slapped in the face the week before [against Champe] and that woke up our program,” coach Chris Haddock said.

Bassie Kanu led the rushing attack against South County with 25 carries for 150 yards, and Jordan Wright had eight carries for 117 yards, including a 77-yard score.

Their preparation for the Stallions started in earnest on Monday. Saturday had been designated for airing out what went wrong against Champe, an opportunity to learn and then move on.

“Every week after a loss is a unique balance between learning from our mistakes and getting focused on the week ahead,” Haddock said. “We got focused real quick this week.”

This is the fifth installment of The Washington Post’s high school football notebook series, published twice weekly on Sunday and Thursday.

MOUNT VERNON OFFENSE SLOWING DOWN — FOR ITS OWN GOOD

After his team scored 70 points in their season opener against Edison, Mount Vernon Coach Monty Fritts had a unique problem on his hands the following Friday in another big win over Langley: On possessions in which his highflying, experienced offense didn’t score, players were getting frustrated on the sideline.

“The kids had unreal expectations,” Fritts said. “They had gotten accustomed to scoring every play. That gave us a bit of a learning curve.”

While it wasn’t quite the same performance as their debut, the Majors’ offense did put 37 points against Langley to go 2-0. For win three, it was 34 points in a win over Falls Church.

Fritts said the key so far has been the excess of weapons they have surrounding the heart of their offense — quarterback Tim Heltzel, a two-year starter, and wideout Darrien Newton, who Fritts called “one of the best players in the state.” That speed has given Mount Vernon big-play ability the Majors are starting to learn to do without.

"Westfield Chose to stay in Zone most of the night"

Probably not a bad choice in the end. When your best corner is 5'6" and the other is playing in second varsity game ever. Plan will likely be different if they meet again in the playoffs.

From the Washington Post high school football notes...

STUART'S 'BEST-KEPT SECRET'

Who is Ayhan Yenican? The Stuart quarterback who threw for 367 yards and five touchdowns last week. "He's the best-kept secret in Northern Virginia," Raiders Coach Clarence Martin said.

Martin caught glimpses of what Yenican, at 6-3, 210 pounds, could do last year, when he went under center after Stuart's starter went down and threw for more than 400 yards in a game. Martin gave him some snaps the rest of the season, but it was never truly Yenican's offense until this season.

"It was important to have a full off-season with him as the definite starter," Martin said. "He has great chemistry with the receivers."

Westfield did press Spalding with help over the top on almost every snap. He caught one ball with three defenders on top of him and his catch in overtime for a TD with was with two defenders closely covering him. In both cases Spalding made a tremendous adjustment to the ball which he does so well. Tull threw the ball into coverage because Spalding wins the majority of 50/50 balls. The hitch he caught for a 76 yard TD was a good adjustment by South County's coaches (and poor tackling by the Westfield secondary) by moving Spalding from the outside position in trips to an inside slot. Lastly, Spalding had 4 catches for 101 yards against Centreville. Although he did not have a receiving TD, 25 yards a catch is very impressive. Spalding deserves his due. So to say teams are choosing to refuse to implement schemes work is totally inaccurate.
