You want to know why you're ranked 3rd? Do you really want to know? Let me begin. For starters you just lost every single offensive lineman that played a snap last year. Every single one.... You return a QB who SPLIT reps. He essentially only has 6 games under his belt. You bring back a couple slot kids who got time but you don't return a starting running back. Not a single one.

On defense you just lost most of your front 7 and half your secondary. Say what you want about the previous Lake Braddock coach (in my opinion one of the best based on his record and history in the state) but they were consistent on defense regardless of who was playing for them.

Then you bring a coach who was I believe 10-20 (we won't include his playoff losses ((2)) and his playoff wins ((0)) and try to sell the idea that he's the best coach in the state. His best years at stonewall were when he rode the talent of a couple kids who all went to Virginia Tech and played.

And lastly you just LOST one of the best staffs in the state. Whoever picks up braddock's leftovers is getting a steal. It will be an average year for the Bruins filled with glorious tweets from this "Doc" guy. The fans will burn down the castle and a new king will be crowned. Burke does not settle for mediocrity

Who needs a running back, coach Doc runs a wide open fast paced spread.

The QB will throw 40-50 passes a game and can also be the running back.

He did well at Woodson, had them in the playoffs last year.
Imagine what he will do with the talent LB has.

He brought his entire staff, so everyone is on the same page.

I see nothing but big things from LB this year

LB does not have the best staff in the state, hell, ROBO, SOCO, CVILLE, WF, & a few others are far superior to the new staff. One question, how did that spread work for LB in the post season in years past? Not very well, they moved to a more run heavy offense the past couple years because when they got to the post season and played strong defenses they were shut down. Look at their losses to WF, all WF did was blitz on every down, something they rarely do, and take away LB's passing attack. Bottom line, the spread is great for regular season but name one team in the past 5-6 years from NOVA who won a state title with the spread offense.......

The spread offense works great if you are in an area that allows a ton of practice. Many states now allow actual spring practice, and most spread schools spend the spring and summer running 7 on 7. Not the short 7 on 7 season they do around here, but as soon as the spring semester starts, 7 on 7 practice starts, and runs through the summer. Additionally, states down south end their spring sports season before school is out, so that spring football gets at least two weeks with everyone in school, and not competing with other sports. All of this extra time gives the QB and receivers time to develop better timing, and the coaches time to put in much more complex passing games. With the time VA schools have, and the little time devoted to 7 on 7 in NOVA, teams cannot develop the complexity required for a true HS spread offense. Which is why the only time you will see a spread work around here is when you have a QB who can through all over the field, sideline to sideline at least 30+ yards.

I saw the LB QB during 7 on 7, and he will be a good HS QB, but not a game changer.

Are you related to Doc or something? Of course you need a running back! Just ask Westfield...

Go ahead and throw the ball 40-50 times a game. You are doing the region a massive favor. You also didn't dispute anything else I said. You don't have a lot of solid players and will have to accept that at some point.

You are trying to speak this narrative into existence. Just because you say it louder doesn't mean it's true. If you truly care about Doc you will set the bar low for him and save him his job. He cannot live up to the standards of winning. Make exacuses for him and blame the kids or lack of talent for a couple years then move on to another school.

Doc and his staff are on the same page you say? Is that page 1 or page 2 of the playbook that they're all stuck on, because that's what the Woodson offense looked like. Couple screens here and there maybe run inside zone for a gain of -2 then get the punt squad ready.

Bold prediction for LB this year, their punter will be all state from gaining a lot of net yards and getting lots of practice

Whatever happens with Lake Braddock, they benefitted from redistricting. They have a minimum of three wins on their schedule, with West Springfield, Woodson, and Fairfax.

OAKTON HS wins Wells Fargo Cup for best overall athletic program in the state?? How tf does this work?? I guess their spring sports are really good but their Winter sports bball team always was bad (at least when my kid went there). Still, Not bad for a school with much less students than their conference rivals. Too bad redistricting and daddy-ball killed their FB program.

VHSL website explains in detail how it works. There are like 17 sports many of which have both boys and girls events. If you are good at golf, cross country, gymnastics, soccer, swim/dive, tennis - you can rack up points.

LB will run the table, you guys don't know what we have and wont know until the season starts.

Coach Doc and staff have plans for the region and they will be unveiled in the opener against Westfield. Lets just say we will be fast pace and relentless.

You will see everything goes thru LB this year and everyone else just have to try to stop it.

Hylton has the star power in Ricky Slade. Freedom is the team with the best returning record in the Cardinal District.

by Jim McGrath, recruitNoVA

Ricky Slade.

To follow the Cardinal District in 2017 this season is to know that the Hylton running back, bound for Penn State next year, will be the focal point of the district.

And why not? The 5’10, 185-pounder entered last season as the top-rated Class of 2018 running back nationwide in some recruiting service circles. His junior season didn’t disappoint, with over 1,790 yards on the ground, 338 receiving yards on 25 catches, and 23 TD’s by land and air.

Slade committed to the Nittany Lions in February. If he was still unknown to some fans, his talents went viral last week. At “The Opening” camp, Slade accentuated his juke and miss move on a defender during the “Make ‘Em Miss” drill with a back flip that found its way on to social media, including a Penn State sports site. In fact, it was the first of two flips he would do that day, as Slade was widely seen as the offensive MVP of the camp.

And he still has a senior year to play.

In fairness, there will be plenty more to see in the Cardinal this year. Actually, Slade’s Hylton team (6-5) doesn’t even boast the best returning team record. That accolade would belong to Freedom (8-3).

If Slade is the #1 running back of the present for Prince William County, then Freedom’s Tyquan Brown is the #1-A back of the present, and shining light for the future. Brown gained 1,649 yards with 12 touchdowns last year, as a sophomore with about the same size (5-9, 185) as his better-known counterpart. Expect Brown to be headlining here and in many other outlets this fall. The Eagles could help their collective cause with an enhanced passing game.

Four of the seven teams return with losing records, including Forest Park and Potomac (4-6), Woodbridge (3-7) and Gar-Field (1-9). A fifth team, Colgan, is beginning its first year as a varsity squad, but starts the season with an 8-1 jayvee record against a full district schedule from last year and DeMatha transfer Justin Kapp behind center.

GAMES TO WATCH:

Sept. 15: Colonial Forge @ Hylton: A good barometer game for Coach Tony Lilly’s Bulldogs. Colonial Forge (11-3 in 2016) advanced all the way to the 6A South finals where they dropped a 27-20 heartbreaker in overtime to Oscar Smith. Forge returns 6-4, 240 lb. tight end/defensive end extraordinaire Mitch Shinskie and wide receiver Zack Kindel, and has the added distinction of ending Hylton’s season last year with a 23-0 playoff win.

Sept. 29: Freedom @ Hylton: The top two Cardinal District contenders meet in an early district matchup. More importantly, it will showcase Freedom’s Brown against Hylton’s Slade. First runner to 200 yards wins? The winner of this game may have the inside track to the district title in the final five weeks. Get a ticket now, as both of these guys will be playing on Saturday’s soon.

Nov. 3: Woodbridge @ Gar-Field: As is usually the case with rival games, you can throw the teams’ records out the window. Gar-Field has to play its first three games on the road, but the plus side is that five of their six Cardinal District games, including this regular season finale, will be at home. The Indians, under new coach Tony Keiling, have their numbers back up and should be able to locate more talent as their mission to reverse last year’s 1-9 mishap season molds into reality. Old time rival game, and that’s a good enough reason to go.

Two players don't make a team, football is a team sport. If you don't have an O-line that can open holes, those two RB's aren't going to mean a thing. Also, if you don't have a passing game, opponents will just stack the box to shut down the running game. Last but not least, if you don't have defense or special teams, having 2 quality RB's won't get you many W's. My only question is, didn't both of those RB's play for SL's last year? If the answer is yes then why didn't they get to states last year?

Centreville - Chris Haddock
Centreville Counts on Defense to Clinch Concorde Crown
by Jim McGrath, recruitNoVA

Team: Centreville (Clifton, VA)
Classification/District – 6A/Concorde
2016 Record – 9-3 (lost to South Lakes 22-20 in second round of 6A North playoffs)
Head Coach – Chris Haddock
Mascot – Wildcats

The Wildcats pulled off one huge win last year, an 8-7 squeaker over Lake Braddock, and came within a whisper of meeting the Bruins for a second time, in the 6A North semifinals. However, South Lakes pulled off a 22-20 win in the game’s final minutes to end Centreville’s season.

As expected, the Wildcat defense provided stiff opposition to the Seahawks last November. And for Centreville to catapult over the heap of teams which includes South Lakes, Madison, Lake Braddock and 6A state champion Westfield, it will be the defense with which Coach Chris Haddock pins his hopes.

Last year, the Wildcat defenders gave up 13.1 points a game, the third best mark in 6A. This year, the bar will be set higher.

“(The defense is) very strong,” said Haddock. “I expect they will give up an average of less than a touchdown a game.”

If the defense can hold the opposition to under ten points a game, the offense will be able to survive its probable growing pains. Jameel Siler graduated after last year, and Presley Egbers will take over as quarterback for Centreville. Egbers (5-10, 180), just a junior, has shined in various camps this spring and summer and shows FCS potential as a college player, according to Haddock. He will be joined in the backfield by senior running backs Daequan Williams-Person and Bassie Kanu. The trio will be blessed with a large offensive line in front of them.

“The offensive line should be one of the best in a decade,” said Haddock. It is headed by Jackson Schule (6-7, 310), Thomas Bryant (6-3, 270) and Brock Assel (6-3, 260), all Division I prospects. As long as the line holds up, the Wildcats should find success running, easing the pressure from Egbers to move the ball through the passing game.

Junior linebackers Tre’ Maxwell (6-2, 190) and Lamar Horner (6-1, 200) will shore up the middle of the defense for Haddock, while Kanu (5-11, 190) and Jordan Wright (5-10, 185) should fend off plenty of passes from their defensive back positions.

Others to watch: Charlie Salette (6-2, 190, RB/LB, Sr.), Gavin Thomas (5-10, 305, DL, Jr.), Gabe Brooks (6-3, 240, DL, Sr.), Nick Kuzemka (6-0, 185, LB, Jr.), Jordan Besson (5-10, 180, DB, Jr.).

I stumbled upon the Quarterback transfer into Colgan. BUT, are there any others that would be considered significant? I know that there have been in VaBeach. As usual, Chris Scott (now at Bishop Sullivan) has successfully pulled in some middle school kids that would have attended somewhere else s ninth graders. Along with some top talent in the Beach transferring, Bishop Sullivan could be considered the TOP HS Football team in all of VA. (Not my opinion)

This guy has been on CVHS' jock all year, I think this is the 3rd time he's written about them I glowing fashion. Does he know something everyone else doesn't? Or is he on CVHS payroll? Either way it's obvious who's been posting anything positive about them on here.

South Lakes Returns Veteran Team and Enters 2017 as a 6A North Favorite
by Jim McGrath, recruitNoVA

Team: South Lakes (Reston, VA)
Classification/District – 6A/Liberty
2016 Record – 12-2 (lost to Westfield 42-12 in 6A North final)
Head Coach – Trey Taylor
Mascot – Seahawks

After thrashing Lake Braddock 40-22 in a 6A North semifinal last year, Trey Taylor’s Seahawks marched on to the gridiron at Westfield ready to silence the Bulldogs.
However, their aspirations fell short, as their successful season ended with an awkward thud, in the form of a 42-12 loss to the eventual state champion, in the 6A North final.

A repeat of the 30-point loss is unlikely. The Seahawks lost 320-lb. star lineman David Kroll (U. Delaware) to graduation, but return almost all of their skill players, as the prohibitive Liberty District favorite should also return to the 6A North region title game.

In short, South Lakes is loaded. Senior Devin Miles (5-10, 175) will return at quarterback. Miles was workmanlike last season, and for good reason. His primary focus was to hand off to arguably the state’s best tandem of running backs, Spencer Alston (5-11, 195) and Albert Mensah (5-10, 205).

The bad news for the rest of the state is that Alston, Mensah, and their 2,500 + yards and 47 combined rushing touchdowns from 2016 will be back for their senior season, and lined up behind Miles.

“We return almost all of the group on offense, with many of them being three year starters,” said Coach Trey Taylor. “We will be lighter up front, but we will have a group that has played in all types of games and situations. That experience will be our strength.”

Center Jacob McCarty (5-9, 245) and tackle Eric Walter (6-0, 260) look to be the anchors of the offensive line, which should do an efficient job opening holes for the backs. Taylor does add a new wrinkle to his offense this year with the addition of sophomore wide receiver Michael Riche (5-8, 170).

“Riche is the fastest player on the team,” said Taylor. “He will bring some more speed to our vertical passing game and perimeter game, which should take some of the stress off Mensah and Alston.”

Mensah also returns to his defensive end position, where he earned all-conference honors in 2016. He will be joined by other two-way players, such as McCarty (DT) and Noah Seneca (6-0, 185, TE/DE). Senior Eddie Mohler (5-8, 180) returns to his cornerback position, while Kojo Kumi returns to the secondary. Kumi had a key interception in the Lake Braddock playoff game which thwarted a Bruin drive and helped to seal the Seahawks’ win.

Sophomore free safety Joseph Dagbe (5-8, 155) will be one new defender thrown into the spotlight. Dagbe replaces Andrew Funaki, the Seahawks big play specialist on both sides of the ball.

“Joseph is athletic and smart, and will need every bit of that to fill Andrew’s shoes,” said Taylor.

Overall, the coach’s plan is simple. “Our goal is to go undefeated each week. That is it.” If the Seahawks can come together as a team and perform to the best of their ability, another 12 win season and deep playoff run should be in the cards.

Others to watch:
Chris Logan (6-1, 210, T/LB, Sr.), Spencer Coppage (6-1, 200, G/DT, Sr.), Tim Brown (5-10, 225, G, Jr.), Dave Hagengimana (6-1, 180, WR, Sr.), Diego White (5-9, 170, CB, Jr.), Sage Beuchert-Irvine (6-2, 195, LB, Jr.), Chris Ezidinma (6-0, 160, R, Sr.).

- Jim McGrath

Will Seahawks face any challenge in the Liberty District this season? Can they get over the hump in the postseason?

This McGrath guy is a homer, it seems every team he's written about has no flaws and is going to have an incredible season. C'mon man, the article states the Seahawks will be lighter up front, so how does that make for a successful season for the 2 star RB's. If you can't open holes it doesn't matter how good your RB's are, they're not going anywhere. Also the same for their passing attack, they may have the fastest receiver in 6A North, if the QB doesn't get time to throw then it's all for naught. My question is how can they be a 6A North favorite when they were so soundly beaten in the finals last year and they got smaller up front on the O-line? Also if I remember correctly their defense wasn't that spectacular, I don't know, I could be wrong.

Don't Sweat McGraf, he is writhing from the Respective Teams Coach's perspective. That is Haddocks take or Turners take on their Team! One would expect A Coach to tout his Club. SL will do just fine in the Liberty and get Soundly Pounded in the Play-offs by a more formidable Foe. Remember that was about to be a 42-0 Beat Down last year and could have been a 72-0 drubbing had WF not pulled the majority of their Starters 3rd qtr!

This is LB's year!
They will finally handle Westfield and bring the state title back to Burke.

They return:

James, Dizon, Cobb, Metheny Hanifi - skills
Hurley, Haedt, Rudicill, Mclean Altman - o-line
Darcy - QB
New coaching staff- I am hearing is the best in the state

Summary:

With so many returning players and the new coaching staff, how can they lose.
I think most of the coaches in the region agree that LB is the team to beat this year.

Coach Doc is ready to make a statement and it will be loud and clear!!!!

I agree its Braddock's time
VHSL ranking has LB at number 2 behind Westfield, that will change on August 25th.

With the new staff now in place, the program will be much better then in the past.

Good luck to all the other teams!

It will be Lake Braddock and Westfield for the championship in the north.

This year Lake Braddock wins!!

They have a lot coming back on offense and defense. Darcy, Matheny, Cobb ,James on O. Hanifi, Obrien Ahearn, McLean on D.

New coaching staff (everyone is saying its the best in the state!)

With that new staff in place, look for LB to dominate this year.

Exciting time to be a Bruin!

As an Oakton fan, I have to ask - how many of South Lakes' studs are from the Fox Mill community which used to be districted for Oakton? Would some of those kids be going to Oakton if it were say, 2008?

Sad to see a school with 2700 students, competitive in so many sports, have a mediocre football team year after year. The demographics just are not there.

Okay here is my analysis for the future of Westfield football. We are all aware of the changing demographics in the Concorde district or whatever it's called now, but I doubt that it will change more than it already has. Additionally, Westfield has got to be the most under populated school in the area. Its definetly the biggest 4 year high school in the county, perhaps even the state. It's supposed to hold well over 3000 kids but the current enrollment is around 2500. With South Lakes, Chantilly, Oakton, and Centreville, all of which are neighboring schools, experiencing overcrowding, don't be surprised to see a few of those neighborhoods get redirected into Westfield. So although the demographics won't be what they used to be, I do envision a spike in enrollment one way or another soon enough. Although until that does happen, I wouldn't be surprised to see Westfield have slightly mediciocre seasons by their standards.

A big addition to bring South Lakes to 3,000 students is already in the works. So no redistricting there. Oakton will also be renovated and expanded in the next couple of years.

https://www.restonnow.com/2015/10/07/on-the-docket-south-lakes-high-schools-expansion-plans/

The expansion will bring the schools capacity to 2500, which is what the school already has. What the expansion will do is probably get rid of or reduce the amount of trailers as the school is essentially at 2500 right now. You may be right about Oakton but I haven't heard anything about that. I know for a fact that Centreville and Chantilly are overcrowded and there isn't much that can be done about it.

Where do you get that the building at Westfield is supposed to house over 3000 kids? South County is the exact same building blueprint and was overcrowded with less than 3000 when it was a secondary school. It's pretty full now and has an enrollment of around 2100

Westfield had an addition built in 2006 that increased the size from the original structure. They had over 3200 kids in attendance at one point.

Been watching the Gameday Media Live.

Highlights so far:

Stone Bridge
Coach Thompson says this is the best team he has ever had at Stone Bridge. They fully expect to go undefeated and win the state championship at 15-0. Apparently they have recruited well - he mentioned a number of transfers. Was bursting with enthusiasm. Oh, said he couldn't think of a single thing he would change about how they played Highland Springs. Running up the middle from his own 30 on a 4th and 8 was a good coaching call.

Centreville
Coach Haddock says this is the best offseason Centreville has ever had with regard to participation and preparation. Is very excited about the season. Says this team is right up there with the 2013/2014 super-star team. Was clearing room for trophies during his talk.

Westfield
Coach Simmons really downplayed any expectations mostly crying about all the seniors they lost. Lots of new coaches. Dissed his new QB by mentioning several times how scrawny he is and has no experience. Set the bar low.

There are plenty of times where an athlete decides to transfer from one high school to another. Sometimes, the parents move. Sometimes, the parents drive the decision. In other cases, the student-athlete begs to move and it’s not always for good reason.

I’m not here to offer a judgment on any teenager’s situation. That’s not what we’re about.

I will throw this out there, and it originated from a professional contact of mine, Cory Bailey at Coastal Carolina. Cory is the recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach for the Chanticleers, a program that just moved into the Sun Belt and moved up to Division I FBS. Before his tenure at Coastal Carolina, Coach Bailey was the head coach at Assumption College.

Cory tweeted on May 8 about transfer students and it has gotten a lot of attention.

Random Rant..Transferring to get recruited based on the school you're at = crazy. Dominate where you are… we will find you! Show loyalty.

— Cory Bailey (@CoachCoryBailey) May 8, 2017

In six weeks, it’s gotten about 2,000 likes and over 1,000 retweets. Maybe most of the likes have come from high school coaches who have lost transferring players. I know that I liked the tweet when I first saw it.

Oddly enough, Coastal Carolina just received a verbal commitment about a week ago from a local player who’s transferring for the second time in his high school career. The commit is heading to Bishop Sullivan after playing for two years at Portsmouth Christian, and for a season at Greenbrier Christian prior to that. Coastal Carolina found him, recruited him, and got a commitment from him before he has played a down of football for his newest team.

But again, this isn’t about a specific player.

I can guarantee you this. If you’re talented, I will find you. If you’re talented, college coaches will find you. Part of my job is helping college coaches connect to you and to your high school coach. While some high school football programs are better than others and some high school coaches are more skilled at different aspects of football, there is practically always a place for a high school varsity starter to play college football.

There’s something to be said for making the commitment to stay in the same high school football program for your entire high school career. It demonstrates character and commitment. It shows a college coach that you can stick to your decisions. It also allows you to experience high school and high school sports with the friends that you grow up with.

I will state this very clearly. As much as I love high school football, it is still an after-school, extra-curricular activity. Winning a state championship will not complete your life, nor will it make you a better person. If you think that winning a title in high school is going to make you a legend, think again. Most people can’t tell you who won a high school championship two years ago, let alone five, ten or twenty years ago.

Playing college football is less like an extra-curricular activity and more like a job. High school is a time to enjoy playing football. By the time you reach college, you better be playing because you love it, or you may not play for much longer.

With all that being said, there are good reasons to transfer.

Players may sometimes want to play for a different coach, or for a person they see as a more talented coach. They may want to play against better competition. In that case, you certainly want to make sure that there’s room for you in the new program you are headed to. There’s only one ball and there are only 11 spots on the field at a time. You better be good enough to beat out the other guys who are already in the program and competing for the playing time that you think you’re going to get.

As with any big decisions in life, there are pros and there are cons. Transferring works out for a lot of kids, but it’s not without risks. Take a good long look at the potential impact of your decision before you decide to make a move. Parents should be involved as more than a rubber stamp of approval. Look at all of the implications before you leap.

The grass is always greener where?

Not on the other side.

The grass is always greener where you water it.

That would only be available by subscription. Last year Gameday did put out a video that included a few short clips from every coach - I wouldn't expect anything other than that.

LB will beat Westfield in the opener!!!

1. Westfield doesn't usually play well at the beginning of the season and make their adjustments accordingly.
2. Westfield lost a lot and may not be as strong this year.
3. New LB coaching staff is the best in the state.

Stone Bridge has never beaten LB and they wont this year either.

LB has more overall talent this year then they have had on any team in the past.
They may not have that super star this year, but the skill players are all very good and they have depth. The O line isn't as experienced, but has size and strength. they will get better every game.

The defense will be no doubt the best in the region, they return 7-8 starters from last year. Look for a lot of shut outs from this D, this year

New coaching staff, new philosophy.....I am hearing a lot of people say this staff is the best in the state.

Westfield, Stone Bridge, West Potomac, be aware, LB is coming for you.

The new staff at Braddock blows, they sucked at Woodson and they will suck at Braddock.

Woodson had enough talent to be competitive and they were not...that's on the coaching.

So wins some tough games at Braddock and then come back here

The usernames "BigMurph" and "KMurph" is Krista Murphy, the Director of Football Operations for coach Doc, being with him at SJHS as well as WTW, and now Lake Braddock. If you been to any of the games in the past she's the bigger lady with the lesbian haircut- her job is to hand out uniform numbers and make play cards, in addition to managing the sideline during games.

These past several posts have been very humble Krista, we all know it's you lmao.

Scrimmage, Aug 18th Western Branch and St. John’s (DC) at South County. SoCo went to Chesapeake, VA & kicked the Bruins #$? last year. I expect more of the same even though they play the Southeastern District teams pretty well every year, Western Branch really struggles against the fast paced spread offense that SoCo plays.

More interesting should be St. John's vs SoCo.

Colgan Begins 6A Play with High Hopes

by Jim McGrath, recruitNoVA

Team: Charles Colgan (Manassas, VA)
Classification/District– 6A/Cardinal
2016 Record – 0-0 (Varsity play begins this year; JV was 8-1 in 2016)
Head Coach – Steve Baudendistel
Mascot – Sharks

It’s an exciting time to be a Shark – a Colgan Shark, that is.

The Prince William school begins varsity play in football on August 26, with an away game at Forest Park. With the upgrade in competition, games will be tougher for Colgan, but there are plenty of reasons for optimism.

First, the football team is not the first at the new school to field a varsity team. In fact, Colgan has found relative success in other sports, especially boys track which featured two 6A state champions and top-ten finishes for indoor and outdoor track. Second, many of the players were part of last year’s JV squad which finished with an impressive 8-1 record while playing a schedule loaded with 6A opponents.

Coach Steve Baudendistel knows where his team’s strengths lie. “We have a lot of talent at the offensive skill positions,” said Baudendistel. Many of the skill players lack weight, but bring an asset to the field.

Junior Justin Kapp is penciled in at quarterback. Kapp (6-1, 170) started his high school career at powerhouse DeMatha High in Maryland, before transferring to the new school, which is within a mile of his home. Kapp led the JV team last year, and brings talents as a pocket passer and runner to the Shark attack.

Behind him will be speedster Justin Bell. Bell (5-8, 160) is “a threat to score each time he touches the ball,” according to Baudendistel. Colgan also boasts a quartet of capable wideouts, with senior Kaeleb Carter likely to be a favorite target with his 6-4 frame and leaping ability from doubling as a basketball player.

Liam Smith (6-1, 235) is he senior leader of the O-line, but a lot of runs will also go behind sophomore George Neiser, who is already big and powerful at 6-3 and 295 pounds.

Baudendistel likes the versatility and athleticism of his linebacking corps which consists of Clayton Bellamy (5-11, 180, Sr.), John Cook (6-0, 180, Jr.) and Anthony Vilatoro (5-9, 175, Jr.). Huey Bodger (5-10, 215, Jr.) will lead the defensive line. Chase Lundy is the featured defensive back, a unit that is young and largely untested with a sophomore and freshman among the starters.

Baudendistel hopes that the collective mental toughness of the Sharks will go a long way. “Even though this is our first “real” season, we need to rise up to the challenge of playing a full varsity schedule and prepare each week with the confidence of a veteran football program. In a district returning only two winning teams (Freedom, Hylton), a good mental attitude could help these Sharks swim to the middle of the Cardinal District standings – no small feat for a first-year squad.

Others to watch: Darrian Brokenburr (6-3, 215, OL, Jr.), John Neiser (6-0, 200, OL, Soph.), Adam Ripper (5-10, 175, OL, Soph.), Blake Edwards (5-9, 160, WR, Jr.), Josh Mumphrey (5-10, 160, WR, Sr.), Peter Medawar (5-8, 145, WR, Jr.), Romeo Bowen (6-3, 225, DL, Jr.), Cesar Rodriguez (5-7, 215, DL, Jr.), Bazeleel Frimpong (6-0, 230, DL, Jr.), Mike Gerhart (5-10, 155, DB, Soph.), Sam Bowen (6-0, 190, DB, Fr.), Hakeem Sanusi (5-7, 140, DB, Jr.), Trevor Ridley (LB), Andrew Brown (DL), Jordan Bradford (OL), Kam McMillan (DB), Odin Brock (RB).

So? Looking at the schedules from the last several years, they've played one competitive game in three seasons. It's not like they're barely missing out.

LB, Robinson, and Chantilly all have a higher enrollment than Westfield and jrs been like this for a while. However people will still continue to discredit Westfield's success because they apparently have "the most kids". It's not 2007 anymore people! If Westfield still had those kind of numbers (3300 I believe) then I doubt this would be a competition at all.

Wow, what a difference between Northern VA schools and the rest of the State for 6A! With Landstown being #20 in size at 2400 students, most of the 6A South schools tend to be 1800 - 2000 students. Yet, over the last decade, there is an even split between 6A North vs South teams.

It sounds like 6A North is more wide open compared to other years, but until Westfield is knocked out, with Lake Braddock, SouthCo, Centreville, South Lakes all chasing them.

In 6A South, it'll be the same teams as favorites (except Ocean Lakes), with Smith, Colonial Forge, Thomas Dale, Grassfield, and Cox likely making deep runs in the playoffs. Manchester in Richmond is supposed to be very good in 2017 but teams without a lot of playoff experience don't do so well against the very top tier teams. But, if they win against Riverbend, L.C Bird, Monacan, and Hermitage, they'll still have to beat Thomas Dale and/or Colonial Forge just to get a chance to play Oscar Smith or the team that beats them. Sorry to say this but the competition in 6A South might be tougher in 2017.

No surprise there. Prince William County football sucks. I wish the schedules would have kept more of the Loudoun County teams playing Fairfax County.

DeMatha-Westfield scrimmage this afternoon. DeMatha was too much for Westfield as usual. Although Westfield did do better defensively than I would have thought. Held DeMatha off the scoreboard the first couple of possessions. Westfield highlights included a big hit/pass breakup by #3 (Hinton) and a nice interception of Lenhart by #12 (Steinhilber). DeMatha's speed when they got into open space proved deadly and they scored on a number of long TD runs and a pass.

Westfield offense struggled to gain any yardage. Running game was completely stifled and passing game was successful pretty much only on a short passing game. New QB #10 (Kim) showed a surprisingly strong arm and his ball had lot of velocity when needed. Timing with WRs was off a lot and when the ball was there the catches were not made. Exceptions were a a couple of nice gainers to #97 (Cockrill) and and a long (40-50? yd) TD pass to #2 (Morin). Morin showed some nice hands on a number of catches and impressed as much as on the Westfield squad.

Conclusion? Yes, Westfield lost a lot and looked a bit raw. But it was DeMatha. I have a feeling they aren't going to give up the 6A North title easily. But a veteran team - like South Lakes - might be what it takes to knock them off.

For those of you who say Westfield won't be as good just because they lost a few players, I hope you do realize that Westfield literally loses their best player every year. 2 years ago they lost Evan Grey and James Gibson and won it all. Last year they lost Scanlon and Aiello who were the VHSL Offensive and Defensive player of the year I believe, but managed to win it all yet again without them. And both teams that win it all had many injuries! Jack Clancy was out for most of the 2015 season and LaDarion Rivers was out for most of the 2016 season. Nobody seems to realize how deep Westfield really is every year. Coming in to the last few seasons everyone said that Westfields talent was "down", and as soon as a group of guys graduates everyone starts acting like they are a once in a lifetime group that can't be replaced. Yeah Westfield lost talent but so did every other team in the North. Yes I know South Lakes has a good senior class but they graduated 3 really good seniors that played 6 positions for them. And Westfield at their best last year was light years ahead of any other team in the 6A North. I'm not saying that they are gonna win it all this year but until they are defeated in the PLAYOFFS, they should remain the favorites. Watch out for a few new players you've never heard of before.

Westfield will still be very strong. Call me crazy, but replacing the kicker/punter will be the most difficult. That guy regularly made their opponents have to go 80 yds to score and basically eliminated the threat of a return. In close games, that makes a huge difference. They may have a good kicker and punter to replace him, but it's highly unlikely that they are as good this season in those areas and it will have a negative impact of their defense as well.

I have to agree. They have a good system, they get athletes onto the field that may not want to play football, they have a good off season program and once they are on the field they get the most out of them. That is the definition of good high school coaching. It is also why the LB homers need to stop talking and wait for on field results. The new coaching staff has a lot to prove because they did not really prove anything at Woodson. They appeared to win the games that they should but never showed the ability to win against the elite teams in the northern region.

STFU about Braddock and their coaching staff.

They are NOT the best in the state, NOT the best in the region, NOT the best in

the District.

I will wager $100 that Stone Bridge (NOT the best coaching staff in the state)

beats them by double digits in Week Three.

They will also probably lose to Westfield to open the season. Better hope they

don't drop the game against West Potomac or Coach Doc and Company will open 0 - 3.

While I really have come to hate the sycophants and morons on this site that just spew Westfield this and Westfield that, I have certainly come to respect their coaching staff for their ability to prepare for the playoffs and make a run in states. My question is this: Let's be honest - every team tries as hard as they can to win every regular season game. Don't give me any BS that they don't. Well, how can we explain the three or four complete shitting of themselves that happened to last year's 6A State Champions. Only an unbelievable finish prevented them from losing to a truly average Robinson team, they defeated a below average and undisciplined group from TC by 7, actually lost to a battered and beaten and blow chunks Briar Woods team, and were boat raced by Stone Bridge. Can anyone explain the clunkers? And this seems to happen every year? What gives? And try to give an honest assessment and not just tell me that they don't prepare for regular season games and only carer about the playoffs. That is just not true.
