I don't think anyone would disagree. People have been making the argument here for the last 6 years that Westfield is having their success with fewer next level athletes than many of their competitors.

Uh, maybe. But really, South County is the only regular season-playoff rematch Westfield has had the last two seasons so don't know what stats you are looking at.

I don't really buy it. 6A is down this year has been the mantra every single year. Was 6A "up" in 2015?

That was a huge factor. And kinda detracts from your Loudoun having better coaching. Has anyone choked away more state titles in VHSL history than the SB coach?

Maybe. But I will say this, when Westfield needed a defensive stop to win the game against a D1 VHSL All-time record-holding QB they got it done. SB had an almost identical opportunity to close their game.

i can tell you that what Robinson does has been looked at and found to be legal. What you are discribing is not legal, but that is not what they do. All HS offensive lines mess up blocking schemes from time to time and those things get called. No one is teachinng illegal techniques. They would get caught quickly and the penalties would add up. Robinson doesn't get called for any more high low blocks than anyone else. It's football and that stuff happens at times. The Westfield guys need to toughen up and stop with the name calling. It a bad look for a champion.

There you have it LB 2017 State Champs, the kids are excited, no one else is, they weren't excited last year but now they are. Close down the thread, no need to revisit this issue any more........

Except, there's no explanation except that the new coach is great, right? Is there more? Any significant improvements in the weight room dedication, the number of D1 level athletes? Transfers? Upcoming JV studs? Anything at all that would suggest they're gonna handle Westfield? You gotta have more than, the coach is great.

Read more carefully. It is the Loudoun County (i.e. Broad Run) folks that were bitching about Robinson - not Westfield. They cried a lot about it after the 2015 game also.

No comments about transfers into or out of the top Tier football programs this spring?

What about JV kids that will be seeing major playing time and could make a difference for their team in 2017?

Braddock returns a number of skill players, Cobb, Metheny, James, Hanafi, and Darcy at QB, just to name a few. They should easily be in the mix for the region.

Braddock has won 11-12 games for the last 4 or 5 years, this is easily a 11 or 12 or more win team.

The big question, is this the year they finally break thru and beat Westfield or whoever is in the regional final?

Everyone keeps pointing to LB tough schedule, that is no excuse, play the bestif you want to be the best!

What about Chantilly? Things been awfully quiet there. Can we expect big things first year under the new coach or will it take awhile? Chantilly is the largest school in the county and is great at most sports so there is no reason why Chantilly football program should not be among the best.

Success at the high school level takes a whole community's commitment. Without great middle school an JV Coaches. A single new guy the can't do it without the a lot of people to also put into their own efforts. If the kids aren't getting involved in high level football before high school, 4000 student high schools won't ever win with any kind of consistency.

Brian Cobbs is the best receiver in the region, hands down. If the Hayfield coaches would get their heads out of their ass he would probably be a top DB as well. He was the best receiver statistically last year and will have to do the same this year for Hayfield to be somewhat successful. Ricky Slade is a very close second but by far the best RB.

All Very Different Athletes of those Listed
Cobbs very Athletic Reciever probably more upside at the Next Level than Spalding could potentially play Defense.

Spalding although not as Athletic as Cobbs, (4.8-4.9 speed) is hands down the Best possession receiver in the Region.

Slade gifted Runner that has a wide open future of he stays Healthy.

Cockrill Big Talented Athlete that is a proven winner, What he will play at Next Level seems to be the question.

What Does Your Team Need?

Spencer Alston South Lakes committed to Ohio State for Lacrosse, will he even see the Football field this Fall.

Forrest Park, Woodbridge, Battlefield and Centreville all have Athletes that have potential to grab recruiting headlines.

Please. Chantilly teams always flop in the region playoffs... that is whatever Chantilly teams can even make it that far. That school underachieves in everything... including academic! They are no rated below Westfield HS!! Fuck cHANTILLY- The school of never ending mediocrity.

How do they compare to the out going seniors? Can Cobbs and Spalding come close to their production in the past with new QB's (younger and inexperienced)under center?

I in know way think that South Lakes is the best team. I just don't think they have too many games on their schedule that they could lose. If they run the table they will be the 1 seed if the others have a loss. That's what I'm predicting. I'd say they are the 5th best team in the region.

South Lakes was the big winner in redistricting. Their new district includes Herndon, Langley, McLean, Washington-Lee, and Yorktown. That's five guaranteed wins.

Who is going to beat Braddock, they have a great team coming back.
5 starters on O and 7 on D coming back. This may be the strongest team they have had in recent years.

They have one of the best coaching staffs (former WT Woodson staff) in the state now coaching at Braddock.

With that being said, look for them to run the table and represent the north.

Like a previous poster said, "another coach who got taken to the woodshed by WHS"
If he was such a great coach, how come he couldn't do anything against WHS starters? That game could've been 100-0 if starters stayed in the whole game. Every year we hear,"this is LB's year, best team they've ever assembled" get outta hear with that bs. You lost a stud RB, TE, multiple O-linemen. You're left with a noodle arm QB (he's nowhere near Caleb Henderson) WR's that are nothing special. 6-4, 7-3 at best.

You don't need a stud in every position. Darcy is a very good QB, Quinten, Jordan, Methany and Josef are as good or better then any receiver combos in the region. BTW, was Westfield QB anywhere near as good as Henderson? NO!! They won the state championship. This LB team is loaded, so say what you want and we will see you in December.

What a stupid thing to say - LB, under Doc, will run a one dimensional offense - if the QB is off or the weather sucks then they will be in trouble.

Westfield runs a balanced offense, if the pass isn't working then they will just run for 400 yards and vice versa.

Their closest competition should be either WL or Yorktown. Those Arlington schools always punch above their weight when it comes to football. Both should be terrible, but their coaching keeps them competitive.

They can't get past the bulldogs. It might be psychological, but they just can't seem to do it since Gonzaga dismantled them on national TV 3 years ago. It's like Haddock got the wind knocked out of him and has never recovered for the really big games.

Doc of Lake Braddock, the best coach in the region? I looked him up he doesn't even have a winning record. How does he qualify as the best coach in the region?

If he has the same staff he had at Woodson, they never beat a team with a winning record. They were blown out by all of the top 5-7 teams... I mean absolutely destroyed. How does that qualify as the best staff in the region?

Just saying...Westfield, Centreville, South County, West Potomac, Hayfield and Robinson all have better head coaches and staff.

These are the returning wildcats less transfers and last year's freshman. Trying to remember who their transfers were for this year. Looks like a solid group of kids to build around. They will be tough team as usual.

I see only 2 lineman at or close to 300. The one who's 300 is 5'10 which means he's just fat, the other who goes 290 is soft. The only one touting Centreville is the biased coach who is on staff. It's obviously hard for him to face the reality that Centreville will be a decent team but to crown them the favorite is absurd. Since Haddock's Dream Team vanished after the 2014 season his program has returned to where it was before, mediocrity.

Until proven otherwise, Centreville has a QB problem. Too short and scrawny.

How can you say that West Pot, Hayfield, and Robinson have better head coaches and staffs than Doc? What have those guys done besides have better players?
LB is loaded with skill talent. I think they lose to Westfield and then run the table. No way they lose to one run only teams like Stone a ridge and Robinson.

Way!!!!

Stone Bridge will beat Braddock, Robinson, West Pot, South County and Oakton will as well.

Doc and his staff doesn't have enough experience in winning games. So any games that are close will most likely go to the opponent who have experienced coaching staffs who know how to win. I just don't see them being better then 5-5 4-6.

Welcome to the big leagues Doc!!

Anything interesting or of note happen at the Westfield 7x7 on Sunday? I thought about going to check it out for a few hours but couldn’t generate enough interest to motivate me to drive up there.

How do people think Woodson will do this year, with the change in coach? I've heard from one source in the program that a lot of kids quit, but they seem to be ok based on their showing in the 7 v 7

I saw Woodson out at Westfield, they actually looked pretty good. A good QB and a couple of fast receivers with good hands. It looks like the new coach has rallied them and getting things on track.

I think the players realized that coach Doc and the staff was only looking for the next best thing and jumped ship as soon as they could.

Copy & Paste from Washington Post Article. Re: VHSL 2017 Football schedule.

Start the countdown clock: There are only 60 days (two months!) until Virginia high school football season kicks off. That’s 166 days until championship Saturday.

The Virginia High School League released complete schedules for every team across the state on Monday. We’ve been tearing through them looking for the best matchups, buying gasoline for the lawn mower, sharpening our pencils, polishing our camera lenses, debating which schools have the best press boxes.
In other words, we can’t wait for football.

Here are the games we’ve already circled on our calendar. Until then, we’ll be busy X-ing off days in June, July and August.

Aug. 25: Marshall vs. Madison

Madison’s season is already charged with emotion after the tragic death of Coach Lenny Schultz on Saturday. This season opener will be about more than football. The Statesmen squeaked into the 5A playoffs in 2016.

Sept. 1: West Potomac vs. Lake Braddock

Is this finally the year for the Wolverines? West Potomac has lost to Lake Braddock 24-21 in each of the past two seasons. The Wolverines are out to prove they’re over the hump and ready to be considered one of Fairfax County’s top teams.

Sept. 8: Mount Vernon vs. Falls Church

We love this matchup, because who needs defense? The Majors’ quick-strike offense should be in full swing behind quarterback Timmy Heltzel and all-around playmaker Darrien Newton. The Jaguars are ready to keep feeding Dakwandre Marshall, pound for pound maybe the region’s hardest runner.

Sept. 22: Hayfield vs. South County

This game totaled 96 points in 2016, and will once again feature the state’s two top receivers: the Stallions’ Dillon Spalding and the Hawks’ Brian Cobbs. Combined in the 2016 edition of this game, they went for 15 catches, 276 yards and four touchdowns. Bring extra popcorn.

Sept. 22: South Lakes vs. Centreville

The past season made one thing very clear: South Lakes is for real, and the Seahawks return maybe the state’s top rushing duo in Albert Mensah and Spencer Alston. In the middle of a cushy schedule, they face Centreville, which allowed on average just 10.1 points per game last year.

Oct. 13: Hylton vs. Freedom-Woodbridge

By now you’ve heard the name Ricky Slade and all the fits he causes defenses. The Penn State commit ran for 172 yards and two scores against Freedom last year. Hylton still lost. In 2017, can the Bulldogs ride Ricky to a win?

Oct. 20: Tuscarora vs. Stone Bridge

Wait, are you talking about a late-October game between two teams who want to smash the ball at the line of scrimmage? Yeah, this will be fun. Bring a blanket and some hot chocolate and prepare to holler about every holding call.

Oct. 27: Broad Run vs. Briar Woods

Three words: Late. Season. Rivalry. The so-called “Battle of the Burn” has the potential to significantly shift playoff seeding up and down the Virginia 5A, because the Spartans and Falcons have six opponents in common.

Oct. 27: Westfield vs. West Potomac

Will somebody please give West Potomac a break? Nine of their 10 upcoming opponents were 2016 playoff teams. Three of them were 6A North region semifinalists. Here, the Wolverines get two-time defending state champion Westfield on the Bulldogs’ home turf.

Any predictions for wins and losses? I can't say that I've seen their schedule. I think redistricting didn't do them any favors. Some of their easier opponent's we're dropped from their district, like Mt Vernon, Annandale, an tcw, but they kept the tougher teams from their old district. They picked up Robo and Fairfax, but those were already on their schedule

Looking at the schedule they could easily be 6-4 7-3 losses to South County, South Lakes, West Potomac. With incentive to beat LB to show Coach DOC the grass isn't always greener, is a real possibility.

You obviously didn't look at the schedule too closely. Lake Braddock will beat them and so will Robinson. That puts them at 4 losses for sure. They don't play West Pot. They will have toss up games against Langley, Annandale, Yorktown, and West Springfield. If they win all of those they are 6-4. More likely they win some and lose some and end up 4-6 and out of the playoffs.

I looked at the Woodson schedule, I agree, I think 6-4 is about right. They will beat Lee, Fairfax Langley, Annandale, Yorktown, and West Springfield. Lose to South County and South Lakes. Robinson LB could be toss up games.

I think Woodson may be a little better then what people think.
I don't think LB and Robinson will be as good as they have been in the past.

Robinson is 1 dimensional if you stop the run you can beat them.
LB new coaching staff with no track record of winning. I think they will struggle all season

Don't think Mt Vernon is a pushover anymore. If you look at their schedule. 8-2 is probably what will happen. Could be more if their defense improves. New coach seems to have changed a lot. This is their 1st offseason with the coach and I saw them at a 7v7 and they have tons of athletes. They will be interesting to watch this year.

They may make the playoffs, but they've got a long way to go to be a contender. A slightly above average CVille team beat them by 50+ in the playoffs.

Hayfield and West Potomac will be better than them in their District. Could be tough to make the playoffs finishing 3rd in your district.

Top 15 most dominant Virginia high school football programs since 2006
Oscar Smith leads the way in the commonwealth. See which other Virginia squads are in the conversation of most dominant.

Video: Deangelo White is a true inspiration
See a moving touchdown scored by an Oscar Smith player in honor of his father.

Consistency is key to Oscar Smith earning the title of Virginia's most dominant football program since MaxPreps became America's source for high school sports.

The Tigers have a significant number of title game appearances and state titles (four and two, respectively) but that number doesn't lead the way in the state, as other programs have had more finals appearances. What wins the title for Oscar Smith is reaching the Top 25 in the computer rankings every year since 2006.

How important is that? No. 2 Phoebus has five state titles and still trails Oscar Smith.

Larger schools dominate the list. Still, a Class 3 power reached the No. 15 spot in Brookville thanks to two titles and another runner-up finish.

Here is how the points break down:

1. 20 for a state title

2. 10 for a state championship game appearance

3. Other points are based on where a team finished in the final MaxPreps Virginia Football Computer Rankings presented by the Army National Guard. For example, if a team finished No. 1 overall, it would receive 25 points. If it finished 25th overall, the team would get one point. No points are awarded if the team did not finish in the Top 25.

Hayfield, West Potomac should vie for Gunston District title, but watch for sleepers
by Jim McGrath, recruitNoVA

The Gunston District will be another of the five-team groupings in Northern Virginia. Yet, a cursory look at the teams, based on last year’s records, shows a potential dead heat between Hayfield and West Potomac, with either Mount Vernon or T.C. Williams nipping at their heels.

Both the Hawks and Wolverines finished last season with a 9-3 record. Hayfield boasts U. Maryland commit Brian Cobbs (6-3, 200) at wide receiver. Cobbs caught 74 balls for over 1,100 yards last year. He will be joined by J.J Pailin, who hauled in 35 passes.

But who will throw the ball to them? The loss to graduation of Jacob Keeney (3,565 yds., 34 TD in 2016) at quarterback will be almost impossible to replace, but Coach Eric Henderson is working fervently to groom an adequate replacement.

West Potomac did not lose a game by more than seven points last year, and that was the season-ending 21-14 loss to James Madison in the second round of the playoffs. Daiimon Cleveland and his 1,100 yards will return to his tailback position. On paper, the Wolverines don’t have a player over 210 pounds listed on their MaxPreps roster, so they may rely on speed and technique in the early games. Coach Jeremiah Ross may have had the best reply to a reporter’s question last season. When asked about his upcoming game strategy against a team that had beaten them a year before, Ross matter-of-factly replied, “Not lose again.”

Mount Vernon (5-5) could play the spoiler this season. The playoffs eluded Monty Fritts’ Major team in 2016, but they return QB Tim Heitzel (2,223 yards, 24 TD last season) for his senior year, as well as small, but agile tailback Darrien Newton (515 rushing yards in 2016).

T.C Williams (5-6) did make the post-season, but they lost the opener 26-0 to West Potomac, a team they almost beat, falling just 22-21 in midseason. The Titans suffered from a bit of inconsistency last year, but count on Coach James Longerbeam to restore more pride (meaning wins) on King Street. Hopefully, this year’s version of “T.C.” will be a solid day game team as the Titans’ home, Parker-Gray Stadium, does not host night games due to neighbor complaints in the past.

Annandale (3-7) lost its final four games to spiral away from a .500 season, and also graduated many key seniors, including running back Jalen Jackson.

GAMES TO WATCH:

Sept. 22: South County @ Hayfield
If the Stallions and Hawks find suitable replacements for Jack McDaniel and Jacob Keeney, this outcome could resemble a basketball score. A matchup of Northern Virginia’s best two receivers in Cobbs (Hayfield) and Dillon Spalding of South County. A key early season matchup between two neighboring schools.

Oct. 20: West Potomac @ Hayfield
Eighth game of the season for both teams, and this one could decide the Gunston District title if West Potomac can survive it’s opening three games against Briar Woods, Lake Braddock and James Madison. Coach Ross, asked about his goal for 2017, replied, “Survive September.” If the Wolverines do that, Hayfield will have its hands full.

Oct. 27: T.C. Williams @ Mt. Vernon
In case you missed the movie, T.C. Williams remains the only public high school in the City of Alexandria. Mt. Vernon is ten miles down Rte. 1 and in Alexandria (Fairfax County). In spite of the distance, the two have developed a rivalry that dates back to the early 1980’s when each athletic program accused the other of poaching its players. There’s a good chance that either, or both teams, could enter this contest at 5-3 or even 6-2. If Mt. Vernon wins, it could make the regular season finale against West Potomac on November 3rd much more meaningful.

South Lakes looks to be the class of the Liberty District
by Jim McGrath, recruitNoVA

This year, he revamped Liberty District has a clear-cut favorite in South Lakes. Coming off a 12-2 record, the Seahawks made it all the way to the 6A North final last season, with only Westfield blocking their entrance to the state championship at Hampton University. In 2017, they are the only returning team in the Liberty that finished over .500 last year.

It is highly doubtful that this scenario will replay itself in 2017. Any team entering the October 6th district opener with a winning record should maintain it through the five Liberty games, which run consecutively to end the regular season.

Washington-Lee (5-6) and Yorktown (4-6) stand the best chance of clinching a winning record and a spot in the 6A North playoffs. The Patriots may have the advantage, as last year’s mark was an aberration by Coach Bruce Hanson’s standards; in fact, it was only his third losing campaign in 32 seasons. W&L lost the linchpin in their aerial circus last year with the graduation of quarterback Ricardo Mestre, and the Generals will need to replace several other key offensive players.

Langley (2-8), Herndon (1-9) and McLean (1-9) struggled last year, and only McLean might start as a favorite in their opener, when they travel to Fairfax, a 0-10 team last year, on August 25.

Games to Watch:

August 25 – South Lakes @ W. T. Woodson: Already head and shoulders above their district counterparts, the Seahawks will probably face their stiffest opponents in the out-of-district lineup, which comprises the first five games.

There is no guarantee that Woodson will push South Lakes to its limits. The Cavaliers were 5-6 last season, and then lost their coach Mike Dougherty to Lake Braddock. However, his replacement, Jared Van Acker, led Battlefield to a 16-7 mark in 2015 and 2016, and his WTW troops have been busy in the offseason.

September 22 – Centreville @ South Lakes: A mid-season tangle against the Wildcats may prove to be the South Lakes’ toughest regular season game. But this year’s Seahawks remain loaded. Devin Miles returns to the quarterback position, and brings his dynamic senior running back duo of Albert Mensah (1,294 yards, 25 TD in 2016) and Spencer Alston (1,004 yards, 20 TD). Mensah, even at 5-8 and 205, is also a force at defensive end.

November 3 – Washington & Lee @Yorktown: Regardless of the team records, this final week matchup pits two Arlington rivals in a game that may guarantee a playoff spot for one of the teams.

Yorktown’s Hanson, seen at the Falls Church 7-on-7 Passing League, named four players to keep an eye on. They are, Ryan Wool (WR), Adam Luncher (CB/K), Paul Dalzell (6-2, 185, WR/TE), and Davis Patterson (6-3, 180, 4.55 in the 40, a WR with Division I potential, according to the coach).

Washington-Lee will miss Mestre behind center, and may need to run the ball more. The progression of Tanner Wall, or a new QB, could dictate the offensive scheme. If they run more, they will rely on senior Larry Carpenter and junior Jabari Johnson. However, the Generals will need to shore up a defense that gave up over 31 points per game last year.

Ok, Westfield recruiting to win HS Football. I've never heard that one. Ya gotta come with some evidence-based facts for that or I claim total B.S. Ocean Lakes was the Long of the Recruited State Title in 2014, no doubt but come on, Westfield?

Can Westfield repeat as 6A Champions? Concorde District play may tell the story

by Jim McGrath, recruitNoVA

With the upcoming realignment among football teams in the VHSL, old rivalries will be restored, and others will be renewed. Some districts are going ten teams deep, while a few, including the Concorde, Gunston and Western in Northern Virginia, will only carry a quintet of squads.

recruitNoVA.com embarks on its “Games to Watch” from among the 12 districts (almost 13, if one counts the overstuffed Northwestern with its baker’s dozen, including six teams from our readership zone.) Of course, there are also the eight private schools, strewn among three conferences (IAC, MAC, VISAA-I).

We start with the renewed and revamped Concorde District. Five 6A North teams will vie for the district crown, as well as a top-16 ranking in the pool of 27 teams which is needed to earn a first-round playoff berth.

Westfield (13-2, 6A state champions), under coach Kyle Simmons, is the top dog and will remain so until they are knocked out of contention. The Bulldogs lost two of their first six games last year, before running off with nine straight victories and a second consecutive state championship.

James Madison (11-2 in 2016) hosted Westfield in a 6A North semifinal game, but lost 31-13 to end their season. The Warhawks have suffered losses on and off the field. First, the family of star running back Landan Thomas relocated to Northern Florida for business purposes. More recently, and much more tragically, their coach, Lenny Schultz, was killed last weekend, struck by an oncoming vehicle while stranded in the median of the Capital Beltway in Springfield reattaching a boat to his pickup truck. Schultz’s son Albert IV, 24, was also critically injured.

Centreville (9-3) had their playoff run silenced with a narrow 22-20 loss to South Lakes in Round 2. The Wildcats, with Chris Haddock at the helm, will be looking for a boost to push them to the district title.

Chantilly (4-6) replaced coach Mike Lalli with Sean Curry and hopes to reverse its playoff fortunes in 2017. Oakton (4-7) made the round of 16, but were blasted by South Lakes 54-14 in the opening playoff game.

GAMES TO WATCH:

Aug. 25 – Westfield @ Lake Braddock: A tough opener on the road for the Bulldogs. Lake Braddock finished 11-2 last season before a surprising 40-22 loss to South Lakes at home in the 6A North semis. Jim Poythress has left the Bruins, replaced by veteran coach Mike Dougherty, who was last seen with W.T. Woodson for the past three seasons. Lake Braddock lost 1,800 yard tailback Lamont Atkins (U. Maryland), Ibrahim Mansaray, and a host of key role players, but returns Jack Darcy, who rotated with Ty Crabb at QB in 2016, and Tyler Metheny at wide receiver. Ben Dizon should see more carries this season, while Josh Ahern (6-3, 215, Jr.) will anchor the linebacking corps on defense.

Oct. 6 – James Madison @ Westfield: The Bulldogs were 4-2 after six games last year and almost fell off the rails. It led to a meeting of the minds between Simmons and RecruitNoVA.com Player of the Year, quarterback Rehman Johnson. After the 34-28 state title win over Oscar Smith, Johnson said, “Coach (Simmons) gave me the confidence (after Game 6) to run our plays and the trust for me to throw the ball. He realized our talent and potential and opened up the playbook.”

The Bulldogs never lost again. Ironically, Madison will be their seventh opponent of 2017.

But Johnson is gone, as well as a host of other Westfield standouts such as receivers Ivory Frimpong an Sean Eckert. Noah Kim is slight of build (6-2, 160) at quarterback, but he is only a sophomore and has been busy progressing rapidly on the camp circuit this year, as well as with a dozen signal calling colleagues at the Fairfax Football Academy. Matt Cirillo (5-10, 215, Sr.) had some key carries in the title game as a fullback, while Taylor Morin is hoping to develop into a formidable target at receiver. The defense is solid.

Madison counters with its own stalwart defense, led by middle linebacker Nate Leas (6-0, 205). However, it will be the team’s ability to recover from the loss of Coach Schultz which will dictate their fate this season. By Game 7, this could be a watershed contest for the Warhawks.

Nov. 3 – James Madison @ Centreville: If Westfield falters in 2017, this final regular season game could have district championship implications.

For Madison to win, they will need to reconstruct their offense, which lost graduating QB Jacob Choutka after last season. The Warhawks have three upperclassmen listed for the position on their roster (Patrick Berry, Raul Jurado and John Cothran), but Cothran, a senior, is the only one to throw a pass (just one) last season.

Centreville graduated Jameel Siler, but looks to junior Presley Egbers to lead the offense. Egbers (6-0, 170) only threw a handful of passes during the regular season, but was thrust into action for the South Lakes playoff game, as Siler’s receiving ability put him at the slot, in an attempt to confuse the Seahawks. Egbers completed four of seven balls for 114 yards, and a 75-yard TD to Matt Brown. He has also been busy on the camp circuit and should be ready to go.

Deonte Edmonds looks to be the top returner (eight yards per carry) at running back as a junior. And Bassie Kanu (5-10, 170) is a beast at cornerback, and one who carries a chip on his shoulder entering senior season.

I know EVERYONE on FFU dislikes or even hates Oscar Smith Football & lumps them in with Ocean Lakes for being cheaters BUT, no one seems to understand that some of their kids grew up in truly adverse environments! The Beach kids mostly live in middle class, 2 parent homes and have choices that just aren't available to South Norfolk kids.

Below is a true, honest depiction of a success story of how teachers, counselors and coaches can make a real difference in someone's life. From the hood to a real chance to get out, that's all those kids are looking for. Just realize the urban areas in most every school have kids with the same challenges.

Michael Wyche has been from the bottom to the top. His story is an inspiration.

By Andy Hilton, recruit757

A lot of football fans will see a lineman, who had a few bumps along the way. Fans will see a kid who had trouble in school, played for a power house in Oscar Smith, ended up in JUCO, but finished his college career on top of his game at the University of Miami.

On the surface, it looks like a story where Michael Wyche had to fight hard for success. It’s so much more than that.

Michael Wyche was born of a chance encounter between his mother and his father. They didn’t know each other until one night, when Michael’s dad was running from the police, he ran into an apartment to hide. He not only escaped arrest, but he also met Michael’s mother.

“They were in Harvard Apartments in South Norfolk. I have no idea what he was being chased for. He eventually got arrested and got a 40-year prison sentence. He went to jail in 1996, when I was two-years old. My mother got her tubes tied after having three children. She wasn’t supposed to have me. I’m the baby. All of my siblings are in their late 30’s (Cynthia, Melanie, and Gilberto),” said Wyche. “I was unexpected. My parents were never a couple. They were just good friends.”

Michael’s father, James Walker Jr., was not told that he would have a child.

Dorothy “Eve” Wyche, kept it a secret.

“He was 16 going on 17 at the time and she was 34 years old. He lied to her about his age,” Wyche said. “He was in prison by 21. He met me when I was one-year-old. He saw my mother’s mother in the store and she told him he had a son. My mother never told him because my father was crazy. He was a gangster. He lied to my mom and told her that he was older than he really was.”

Michael was off to a tough start. His parents were never together. His mother lived in South Norfolk, in poverty, with other kids to raise.

My momma was struggling. I didn’t want to leave her (when I got older) because I didn’t want to see her end up dead one day. There was fighting in the house. We ended up getting put out of our house and ended up living in a shelter in Portsmouth (Virginia). Most of my family wouldn’t let me stay with them. They said I was a bad kid. They didn’t want me around,” admitted Michael.

Poverty, homelessness, domestic violence… it’s a bad recipe for raising children. Michael Wyche grew up knowing the streets and knowing very little about the traditional education that could get him out of his situation.

Wyche started getting into trouble at the age of 11. He was sent to the Challenge Academy at Camp Pendleton. That involves a military approach to discipline and learning. He was introduced back into public school, going to Oscar Smith Middle, but was expelled and had to go to a SECEP school (Southeastern Cooperative Educational Programs). That’s typically for learning disabled and behaviorally challenged students. There, his life took a turn for the better.

“I found my mentor. Alexander Cheeseboro got a hold of me at SECEP.”

Cheeseboro is a 6-5 350 pound hulk of a man who played college football himself. He called on Michael to consider his actions. He wanted Michael to care for himself and those around him.

“In the streets of South Norfolk, (the gangs) told us you’re going to either sell drugs or play sports. Most of the guys my age had our mind made up. We were going to sell drugs, then go to jail or die,” Wyche said.

It takes a village to raise a child. Between Cheeseboro and teacher Donna Notti at Oscar Smith, Wyche was able to make a right turn.

“She really cared about me. She was my resource teacher. I didn’t like school at all. I barely even paid attention in school. As a matter of fact, I used to go to school and sell drugs. I just stopped. She saved my life. I wanted to play football.”

“(Oscar Smith Football) Coach Morgan built a brotherhood and I wanted to be a part of that. Coach Morgan knew what type of person I was. He told me that I couldn’t be part of the brotherhood unless I stopped what I was doing. He said ‘You either want to go rob a bank, or you want to go to college. I can help you do either one’.”

That was in his tenth grade year. Michael had been diagnosed with a personality disorder. He was assigned to Special Education. He was dealing with depression. It took a lot of academic work for him to graduate from high school.

“Miss Notti taught me how to read because my reading level was borderline illiterate when I got to Oscar Smith. My grandma would try to get me to read, but I was in the street so much (as a kid) that I didn’t care about reading. I didn’t care about school. She would call on me to read in class and I would act crazy just to get kicked out of class. I knew I couldn’t read.”

“Miss Notti was crying to me in the hall. I’ve never seen any teacher cry about me. She told me how she had my back. She told me I didn’t have to worry about anything. I had never heard that before. I thought it was me against the world.”

“I was tutored by Miss Notti in high school and she continued to tutor me in college. I talked to her every single day. She’d send me words of the day to help my vocabulary. Nobody would see me with dreads and tattoos and expect me to know these big words.”

Still, he had learning disabilities and had to go to junior college just to continue playing football after high school. He didn’t qualify otherwise.

“I want everybody to know that (I struggled) because I want the kids to know. I’m not ashamed, because I went to college,” Wyche said. “At Junior College in California, I had maybe $100 a month. My grandparents sent me money. I didn’t know that you had to pay to eat; that you had to pay for an apartment. I ended up selling drugs again. I realized that it’s wrong. I gained nothing from that. I’m a leader. I promised my momma before she died that I won’t do that anymore.”

Wyche was at East L.A. College when his mother passed away in 2013. That was another turning point for him.

“After her funeral, I had to get on a plane because I had a game the next day. I really didn’t have time to reflect on (her death). It took me into a depression. I had suicidal thoughts. I never really worked through it.”

Wyche went through the recruiting process once again coming out of Junior College. He was getting the college work done, and he had to decide where he would finish playing college football.

“In college, I always had my work done because of Miss Notti. I always felt more comfortable with her than with the tutors in college.”

Wyche landed in Miami, but had never dealt with his mother’s death. He was mad. He was depressed.

“I took a job working in a restaurant. That was like taking a lion out of the jungle,” he said. “All these years, I had been playing football. I didn’t know how to work at a restaurant. It was owned by Ray Allen.”

Allen, then a star for the NBA’s Miami Heat, was winding down his professional basketball career. Even pro athletes who make millions want to have something to invest their time and money into when they finish playing sports. He retired from the NBA in 2014.

“He’s just a good person. He was there for me. I don’t know why. The first day I met him, I was working for him and he told me to take a ride with him. We got in his Rolls Royce Phantom. I had never been in a Rolls Royce before. We went down south (Homestead, FL) to this Range Rover dealership to pick up his car. He had me drive his car back. The whole way down there he was giving me knowledge about life and things like that.”

“Ray and I had a chance to talk. I told him everything that was going on and he sat there and listen to me like an uncle or a big brother. He told me that I could change anything, but I have to be the one to do it. He told me that he hoped my story wouldn’t end where I was.”

At the time, Wyche was playing football, but he was still depressed. He 395 pounds. He admits he was out of shape.

“I started working out with Ray. He had to make me run, but we had to have fun. I was 400 pounds! We ended up playing basketball. It was the first thing I learned to play growing up. We played pick-up games, and in all the games we played, I never saw him miss a shot. He would always pick me on his team. We would go over to his house, cook on the grill, talk outside on the beach. Though he had never seen me play, he told me he loved me like a brother. That meant a lot to me.”

Wyche finished his playing career at the University of Miami in Florida with ten credits left to go. He will earn a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology once he finishes that work. In the meantime, he’s trying to realize his NFL dream.

Wyche has gotten a chance to mini-camp with the Green Bay Packers. If a job offer doesn’t come from the Pack, there are several other teams showing interest. Mike is leaving that in the hands of his agent.

“When I left the field at Green Bay, I gave Coach McCarthy a hug and told him thank you for the opportunity. I told him he don’t know me, and he doesn’t what he’s done for me. He asked me to explain and I told him what’s good doesn’t have to be explained. Just know that you gave a diamond in the rough the opportunity of a lifetime. That’s big in my city.”

He’s also pursuing a career in motivational speaking. Michael feels as though his story needs to be told.

“My story will take you high and take you low. It will pick you back up. I know what it feels like to live in the hood with no lights on. The water just got cut off. When the water man left, we would go back out there and turn the water back on. I’ve been in those situations. I’ve been in the situation where you don’t have any food and don’t know what you’ll eat that day. I’ve been there when Christmas comes around and there are no gifts. My mom was selling drugs and selling everything out of the house just to get high. I’ve seen people get shot. I’ve seen someone with their head blown completely off their body. I’ve seen that. I learned how to cook drugs at 11 years old. I’ve also learned how to fight through adversity.”

“I’ve gotten back on my feet to keep going. When you fall on your back, if you can look up, you can get up.”

– Andy Hilton

Shows you how well the article was researched. They probably didn't know that Robinson has moved into this district. Robinson will probably be the 2nd or 3rd best team in the district. SOCO has the most talent. Robinson and Lake Braddock are probably even. Then there's a huge drop off. Robinson may have the best coaching staff in the district. That may help them win one they probably shouldn't.

Braddock has the most talent in this conference, although they lost Atkins, they return just about all of the skill players including the QB.

New coaching staff that is the best in the state, this wont be the same old Braddock teams from the past. This team will put up a ton of points and will be the best defensive team in the state

They are a slam dunk for the conference title, north region title and state title.

Coach Doc says this is the most talented team he has ever seen, so be ready

I think they will do ok, but, Robinson cant throw the ball at all, if you are going to be successful you have to be balanced. If they get down by 2 scores, they are doomed!!

Hopefully, they worked on passing game to compliment their run game, otherwise I don't see them being any better then last year

Big question is, will FFX win a game this year? If so, against who?

What I see that wasn't expected, that Robinson is right in the middle of the top teams of the Northern Region. The question will be IF they will be right there again in 2017.

Every other team seems to be what most people would expect. The perennial powers have well developed programs. They win championships when they have the talent to push them to that next level.

VA deserves some national recognition type games & getting a Stone Bridge vs Westfield or Highland Springs vs Oscar Smith game to start the season off each year could do that. I would love to set a poll up to see the results.

A couple of points here.

I have seen Robinson play a few times, and I believe what they teach is a cut block, not a chop block. A chop block involves a double team, with one guy standing the defender up, and the other taking his legs out. A cut is one guy taking the defender out at the waist. It's done from an angle, and is tough to work through. Oh, and cut blocking is still legal, as long as it happens at the LOS. So there is nothing dirty about what Robinson teaches.

For VA to start getting more national recognition, the schools need to start playing more out of state, big time competition. Many of the "big time" high school teams travel for games against elite teams. A top team playing an in-state team will not draw any national interest, at least not if they are VA teams. HS football here is just not considered great on a national level.

For one of the county's largest schools... Robinson is a SEVERE underachiever in football and most boys sports. Outside of their LAX programs, that school is mediocre in about everything. Their school has more or less 600 more students that say... Oakton YET the Rams still couldn't beat them last season. The Rams should have no issues but their backwards offensive philosophy combined with the softest and most whiny pretentious athletes (seriously) in the County are a reason why they haven't and will NOT be relevant in the area for many years to come. "Ram Pride" my ass go back to GLax state titles and preseason hype... the only things Robo does well!

As a Robinson parent, I have to agree with Robo underachievers. Especially when it comes to football. Hell, sports in general. The school really does not care about sports, or winning. They have a good lacrosse program because of the local feeder systems. Nothing the school does. They appear to have a very good wrestling coach, but that is just luck. Their basketball programs are run by the most inept coaches they could possibly find. Not sure how either of those guys still have a job.

As to football, my kid plays football, and I can tell you, without doubt, they are not trained to play dirty. If you think they are "roiding", you obviously have never seen kids, or programs, that actually do the stuff. One of the reason our team was so bad this past year was we were very weak and small. My in-laws came in from Georgia for a game, and thought our Varsity was the JV. When we played LB, it looked like a high school team against a youth club. So not only are they not on some kind of steroid program, they're not really on much of a weight program.

The coaches philosophy would work if he had some bigger linemen, or a QB who could pass and force the defense to cover the entire field. I know they are anticipating throwing the ball much more this fall, since they believe the new QB has a far superior arm to the last guy. We'll have to see on that.

Their may be a lot of issues with Robo and their sports program, but the FB coach being dirty is certainly not one of them. The guys is so clean it's infuriating.

I have been happy with the Robo coaching staff. They know to keep it in perspective. Too many parents out there thinking their kid is he next OBJ or Cam Newton. Get a grip folks, this is HS football. Enjoy your 4 years kids and make sure you get good grades, since it's a low probability that you're leaving here for a D1 ride, much less anything beyond that. The Robo staff stresses good grades first, which is going to carry these kids a lot further, than how many touchdowns they score.

I really can't believe what what I am reading here. Robinson probably has more more combined state sports titles than any high school in Fairfax County (I would think Lake Braddock and Oakton probably close behind). They may not be so great in the big 3 (football, basketball, baseball) but they are always competitive. Every school can't have the very best coach in every sport.

I haven't seen Robinson play too much lately, but when someone claims the kids are small, weak, and soft, the coaches probably aren't the problem. Also, hasn't Robinson been above average the last few years. I'm a Westfield fan and they've played us as tough as anyone and I remember them beating centreville and stone Bridge recently. If they don't have elite talent, but are still competing with the State title contenders I'd say the coaches are doing well.

How is LB picked 3rd in the conference, we have 5 returning starters on offense and 5 returning starters on defense, including the starting QB, coming back. A very good JV and freshmen team last as well.

This on a team that went 11-2 and with a deep playoff run. We beat South County and beat Robinson twice last year. Why are they picked ahead of us?

I also understand that we have put together the best coaching staff in the state, lead by coach Doc.

So what gives with this 3rd place finish?
