So, it is arguable to consider Div #4 will be more competitive than Div #1 for 2017???? Let's consider that it may also be better from top to bottom too!

Maybe. But in the end, it only matters at the top. As long as District 4 has the regional powerhouses, the 3 - 6 slots don't matter that much and 4 has the to 2, maybe 3 teams in the region.

WTF happened to Oakton? Back when I went there a little more than 10 years ago, they were state champs. Now, they're the chumps of the district and have been fora while. Did all the Redskin players move out to Loudoun? That had been a source of good players for Oakton for a long time.

re-districting played biggest role. Their basketball seems to be doing better than their football program.

This past season they lost their QB 1st game of the season due to broken collar bone has to go with a Soph that's not meant to run that style of offense also they relied on a freshman RB who tore his knee up midseason.

They're also a powerhouse in LAX (or at least used to be). Don't know if these kids just didn't cross over to football or what. But most good HS LAX programs have a good football team since a lot of the kids play both.

Not buying that, I know it d Manassas but it's become pretty diverse in the past 10yrs. Besides I would buy it if she was trying to put on a headset and coach herself. Has to be more with him and his method of coaching.

What a joke, the article is written by what appears to be a local parent if it's the person I'm thinking of. Plus, look at Rivals, ESPN, etc. no stars for a kid that's the "best QB in the NR". If he was anywhere close he'd be all over these websites with offers, multiple stars, write-ups etc.. Not an over-exaggerated piece from what appears to be a local recruiting website.

I've watched this kid play, he's an above average athlete, that's it. My fondest memory was when he slid to prevent being pounded by an opposing defender when he was the QB on the freshman team 2 years ago. Also, the 5"11 height he's listed, maybe if he's standing on his toes.

From what I have seen of the young QB the description of "above average" is about right. If you have a very strong team built around him he will be a winner. If he is expected to carry the team on his back perhaps not so much. I think he will do quite well.

Maybe if you are arguing with yourself.Did you see the bottom half of the division, Woodson, WS & FFX HS, they stink!

The top half LB, SoCo & Rob were owned by Div 1 top teams. Road to states on the North still travels through Centreville/Chantilly area.

2016 Westfield Bulldogs -6A State Champs

Undefeated in Conference Play

0-2 vs. Loudoun County, including a loss to Briar Woods, who finished 4-7 on the year.

Heck, it is a good thing Westfield didn't play 5A Conference 14.

They might have finished 5th last year!

I don't see LB being as good as they have been in the past. A new coaching staff, unfavorable schedule doesn't help them at all. The 3 or 4 best players graduated and I don't remember many underclassmen that made a difference.

Westfield and Centreville will be the top team in this area. They both have great coaching staffs and return an number of players.

SoCo will right there in the mix, as they always are. Great athletes and the best WO in the state.

Robinson could be a surprise in the area, hopefully the coaches worked in the off season on a passing game. The defense was very good and looks to continue that.

Hayfield and South Lakes will compete but in the end, I still see Westfield and Centreville the top 2.

You don't get trophies for regular season victories. Don't be mad cause the almighty Loudon County 5A team choked for a second consecutive year in the championship game. Say what you want, but when it counts, Simmons and company always have Westfield prepared for big games.

The main loudoun schools are all very good and the best of D5 is as good or better than the best of D6. That being said WF the past two years has really turned it on in weeks 8,9,10 and the playoffs. The Loudoun schools did not have to deal with the WF teams at their best.
With the FFX schools being split up into two different regions this season will be interesting. WF and CVille will probably be the best in their region with SL, Madison, and Battlefield contending.
The other region is more unclear. SOCO will be good, but the Prince William schools have tons of talent. Hylton, Freedom, Woodbridge, and Forest Park have more talent than the FFX schools. LB, ROBO, and WPOT will need to outcoach them to win in the playoffs. Hard to predict who wins those games.

You are cherry picking stats from the regular season - so enjoy your regular season success. Conference 14 is a very tough and very good football conference - possibly the best in Virginia top to bottom. I don't know if it coaching, lack of improvement throughout the season or what BUT Loudoun schools cannot get it done in the playoffs. I would not have bet against Westfield versus any team in Conference 14 in the playoffs. They got healthy and gelled as a team at the right time two years in a row - beating the best QB in the state of Virginia twice.

Meantime Stone Bridge is going for 1st down from their own 33 on a 4th and 8.

Mike Dougherty is the new, steady hand at the helm of Lake Braddock

by Jim McGrath, recruitNoVA

For the past 18 seasons, Coach Mike Dougherty has built his reputation as a coach who rebuilds new and struggling programs. Ironically, Dougherty, who was named the new head coach at Lake Braddock three weeks ago, will be changing his modus operandi, as he takes over a team that finished 11-2 last season.

Starting at Prince Edward in 2000, Dougherty has been a transformer. He left Prince Edward after four seasons to take on a new challenge, as the first coach of an upstart Dominion program in Loudoun County. After five seasons with the Titans, Dougherty moved on to Stonewall Jackson, a program that had not reached the playoffs in almost a decade. Within three years, Dougherty’s 2012 Raider team finished the regular season 9-1 to reach the postseason, and the following season, made the 6A North semifinals.

Seeking another challenge, Dougherty accepted the head position at W.T. Woodson in February of 2014. Woodson had enjoyed some post-season success in the 1980’s and 90’s, but had been reeling through the 2010’s, with a record of 7-23 in the three seasons before Dougherty’s arrival.

The first year was tough, as Woodson finished 2-8. There was a peep of success in 2015, as the Cavaliers raised their record to 4-6. Finally, in 2016, the Cavs finished the regular season at 5-5, and earned a berth to the playoffs, where they lost in the first round to eventual state champion Westfield.

To hear Dougherty speak of W.T. Woodson would give one the impression that he was in an idyllic coaching situation.

“I loved coaching at Woodson. In fact, it is possible that three of our former players will be starting at Virginia Tech this fall. I can’t wait to see them.”

In short, Dougherty was not looking for a job when the vacant Lake Braddock position appeared on the Fairfax County Public Schools website. However, the fact that it became available with the departure of Jim Poythress, intrigued the Cavs’ head whistle.

“This was the first time I wasn’t looking for a job. But when a job like Lake Braddock comes up, you have to be interested. So I applied.”

Buoyed by the improvement shown with his Woodson team, Dougherty’s application drew serious interest, which led to an interview with Lake Braddock officials and eventually, the job.

The Bruins were one of the top teams in Northern Virginia last season, finishing the 2016 campaign with a 9-1 record, and winning two playoff games before being ousted in a surprisingly convincing manner by South Lakes, who toppled Lake Braddock 40-22 on the road.

Lake Braddock will also be missing a number of star players from last year, including two All-Staters – 1,800-yard running back Lamont Atkins and tight end Andrew Park, who both signed with the University of Maryland.

“We graduated nine of our 11 offensive starters, and six of our defensive starters,” said Dougherty, evaluating his team’s needs. “We’re going to have some holes to fill on the line. That group last year was the biggest I had ever seen in high school, averaging about 300 pounds across the offensive line.”

Still, the cupboard is not bare for Dougherty, particularly at a school like Lake Braddock that has enjoyed decades of athletic success in most of its sports.

Asked about players who have stood out so far, Dougherty was quick to name Tyler Metheny, who may fill some of the multi-purpose slots which were vacated with the graduation of Ibrahim Mansaray.

“He’s going to play all over the place.”

Jordan Cobb should be the top defensive back for the Bruins. And Dougherty looks forward to a quarterback competition between Jack Darcy, who split snaps with senior Ty Crabb last season, and Quentin James, a 6-1 rising junior who has been utilized as a cornerback and wide receiver. According to Dougherty, “he (James) did play some quarterback as a freshman, so we’ll have him out there.”

Looking back at his first three weeks, he readily admits that “I have been real impressed so far.”

Dougherty gained another surprise with his move as twelve of his assistants from Woodson will be making the transfer with him, helping to maintain cohesiveness.

But the coach is willing to tweak his system when needed.

“I started out as a double-wing guy. But when I got to Stonewall Jackson, I learned that our players were better when they spread the ball out. And that’s when we started scoring.”

Dougherty is known for his up-tempo offenses, which give defenders scant opportunities for rest. At Woodson, the Cavaliers, led by QB Jojo Heisley, averaged a whopping 77 plays per game.

“Our weapon is our up-tempo (offense). We force our opponents to keep us with us, and the goal is to run 80 plays per game.”

The Bruins and Dougherty will undergo a baptism by fire to start off 2017. Asked about his goal for the upcoming season, the coach was blunt.

“To get through September.”

Indeed, Lake Braddock will open the season against a veritable Murderer’s Row of teams. The August 25 season opener will be on the road against two-time defending 6A champion Westfield. In the second game, the Bruins will host West Potomac (8-4 last year), followed by another home game, against 5A state runner-up Stone Bridge.

In a parting thought, Dougherty summed up his first three games with one telling sentence. “We’ll see what we’re made of really quick.”

– Jim McGrath

Can you say 0-3 Lake Braddock!!! if lucky they win 1 of those games. They still have to play Robinson, SoCo and Oakton. not looking to good for them. 5-5 at best.

HS offenses trying to run all that up tempo stuff, it never works. His goal is to run 80 plays a game? All that that hurry up stuff does it make players make to many mistakes and turn the ball over. The focus becomes on running a number of plays rather then scoring.

The better teams such as Westfield Centreville Robinson, SoCO will shut all that non sense down. I hope he has a back up plan when that happens.

Sorry Doc not feeling it with Braddock this year

I agree I think Braddock will struggle, new coaching staff, unfavorable schedule. to many holes to fill with loss of standout players. That Metheny is a beast state championship wrestler too.

I believe Woodson had a really good team in 2009 season didn't they play for the regional title?

Colonial Forge runs the gauntlet to win the Falls Church 7-on-7

by Jim McGrath, recruitNoVA

By all accounts, Saturday’s Falls Church 7-on-7 Tournament was a rousing success.

In fact, the championship game featured an added treat. Squaring off for the title were the host team, the Jaguars, against Colonial Forge, last year’s 6A state semifinalist.

In a sense, the game featured the older…ahem… more experienced, against the new. Prowling the sidelines for Colonial Forge was coach Bill Brown, with over 250 victories in his back pocket, as well as a pair AAA Division 6 state championships, won with Hylton in 1998 and 1999.

On the other sideline was Jaguar coach Said Aziz, fresh off a 7-4 campaign, while sporting a 30-26 career record in five years overall at Falls Church. Aziz has performed wonders with the team since taking over after a 0-10 season in 2011; however, the age and experience difference between the opposing coaches created quite a wide chasm.

How wide? Speaking on Sunday, Aziz noted that he wasn’t sure how many victories his opponent had, but that he would be happy to secure half as many during his career. And finally, the coup de grace. Speaking to the topic of coaching longevity, he added, “I think that he’s been coaching ever since I was born.” When was that? “1980.”

Further review shows that Brown worked his first job, as coach at Potomac High, for 12 years, finishing after the 1991 season, but starting in the fall of … 1980.

Experience, and eventually talent, helped the visitors, who stormed to a 40-13 victory over Falls Church to win the Passing League.

The day featured each of the 24 teams playing five games, one per hour, and in 30-minute intervals to give maximum usage to the six game fields. In all, almost one-third of the region’s 85 schools were in attendance. After the final 1:30 game, the top eight teams were determined and seeded into an eight-game playoff. At 2 PM, all of the teams were set – Dominion, John Champe, Falls Church, Broad Run, Colonial Forge, Madison, Tuscarora, and Washington-Lee. Falls Church toppled former National District rival W-L in the first round, while Broad Run beat Madison, Forge overcame Dominion, and John Champe defeated Tuscarora.

In round two, Falls Church beat Broad Run, while Colonial Forge beat Tuscarora to set up the final.

However, he was more serious when talking of the ability of his conference, which will revert back to its National District roots for the 2017 season.

“We did well,” said Aziz. “We don’t get the recognition we deserve (as a conference), but some of our players can play with anybody. Then look at Chad Lewis. He’s the new coach at Edison, but he has a lot of experience and could have coached at any school he wanted. He chose Edison in order to be near his home.”

The old National District was known for its student diversity, and the current list of Capitol Conference (13) schools includes Edison, Falls Church, Marshall, Wakefield, J.E.B. Stuart, Robert E. Lee (Springfield) and Thomas Jefferson for S&T. The one common theme among the schools is that they are all either inside the Beltway, or less than a half-mile outside the ring which circles the D.C. Metro area.

“Inside of the Beltway, it is much more diverse, and you don’t necessarily have as many football players,” said Aziz. Our school is 50% Hispanic, and many of them tend to be more interested in other sports.”

However, now in its seventh year, the 7-on-7 Tournament has been a great success for Aziz. “Part of the reason it works is that we are centrally located (just inside the Beltway and off Rte. 50), and we have room to do it. We use six fields and most of them have recently been changed to turf.” Laughing, he added, “I also like to think that we get along with most schools.”

Other factors include the success of the previous events, a good social media presence to promote the league, and the promise of a well-run, organized league with good competition, as well as five 30-minute games to get in a fair amount of work.

“Guys can get the kinks out and throw the ball around,” said Aziz.

The camp offered veteran coaches a chance to review their troops, but also gave some new coaches a first good look at some of their players. Among the first year coaches in attendance were Mike Grandizio of Paul VI, Joshua Wild of Park View, and John Scholla of McLean.

Wild, in particular, has been struggling to see his new team. The new Patriot is still finishing this school year at his current position in Virginia’s Northern Neck at Westmoreland County HS.

“We didn’t get to have spring practice, so we’ll meet from June 19-23, and then again on June 26-29, with something that I call the “Red Carpet” on the 29th. That way, we’ll have something to build into August,” said Wild, who had only seen his team three times before Saturday.

As long as Aziz can continue avoiding the final SAT weekend of the school year, and drawing top-notch teams to his fields in West Falls Church, the 7-on-7 Passing League should be a fixture for years to come.

In a parting thought, he summed up the day. “We had a lot of good football players out here today.”

These 7 on 7 tournaments are nice for coaches, players, and fans in regard to stats and skill players but that's about it. Unless you have the players in the trenches to allow your offense to execute, or shut down an opponent on the defensive side, they're not much of an indicator. It's fairly easy to throw passes, under a clock, when you don't have pressure in your face. It's also fairly easy for receivers to go across the middle knowing they don't have to fear getting drilled by an opposing DB or LB. Skill can only take you so far in football, don't get me wrong, it's nice to have, but so are solid O & D lines.

Agree, 7 vs 7 is not much but until VHSL allows Spring Football, with pads, this all that there is.

VHSL SHOULD allow for a limited period of time, spring full contact football.

Great coaching. Their Freshman teams aren't usually very good, since they are just learning the game. Then the coaches "coach 'em up" and adjust for what they have. I heard Aziz talk at a clinic last year, and he views it that he is tied to his players, not a system.

LB really screwed the pooch by letting him go.

Look, Aziz has done a nice job for where he is and what he has to work with, but whomever took the time to write that glowing review about winning a 7 v 7 competition obviously has some skin in the game. Go to vhsl-reference.com and take a look at the program over the past five or six years. They have feasted on the weakest teams in the state. I believe Aziz has three wins over teams with winning records on his resume, and those teams were barely that! They get pasted every single time they face anyone who is remotely decent.

Look at this year's schedule. They will smoke the Sisters of the Poor, and get destroyed by South Lakes. Because of their winning record, they will be awarded a decent seed in the playoffs, and get crushed by the first Loudoun team they see.

Broad Run parent here. The Ram the posted on Robinson making it to the finals against Centreville obviously meant to post that at The Onion.

They rolled over and died in the Varsity game last year. No fight, no size, and what is worse... no talent.

If our QB wasn't already defeating the Varsity and played in the JV game, the Spartans would have won that game going away as well.

Nolan Cockrill verbally commits to Army
by John Harvey, recruitNoVA

Most high school athletes only dream of playing for a state championship. Nolan Cockrill guided Westfield High to back-to-back Class 6A state crown.

The 6-foot-3, 230 pound junior will hope to carry on that championship pedigree to the college level as he recently verbally committed to an appointment to play football at the United State Military Academy in West Point.

“The opportunity to play at the next level means everything and I’m very grateful that I get the chance to attend such a premiere institution, along with playing the sport that I have loved since I was a kid,” Cockrill said.
The junior was a standout on both sides of the Bulldogs last fall. Offensively he caught a pair of touchdowns against Oscar Smith to lead the Bulldogs to a 34-28 double overtime victory in the state championship game. He was also a factor in the run game as an aggressive run blocker that knows how to set the edge.

Defensively, Cockrill anchored Westfield’s attack. He led the team in sacks and was a disruptive force at the trenches for the Bulldogs. He earned conference, regional and state honors on both sides of the ball.

West Point defensive coordinator Jay Bateman called Cockrill last month to extend the offer.

“He told me they loved my skill set and versatility, along with the toughness and the fact that I’m a strong student,” Cockrill said. “The coaches at West Point see me as a defensive end.”
Cockrill noted that there was plenty of interest in him from colleges. He had offers from Elon University and Kent State and had interest from the University of Virginia and James Madison.

He’s not quite sure what he wants to study in college level.

The junior admits he still has unfinished business left at Westfield, including pursuit of another state crown.

“For my senior year, I hope to see more (action) on the defensive side of the ball,” Cockrill said. “But I will play anywhere I can help the team accomplish our ultimate goal.”

– John Harvey

This is the football thread not the baseball thread. Are you kidding me, you're posting this for laughs or to troll, so I'll bite. They stunk last year, relied on a freshman RB who tore his ACL & 5'7" QB with a noodle arm. Good luck, you won't even beat Chantilly let alone Madison, there's no way you get by WHS.

Unless the Rams have found a QB that can hit the broad side of a barn they are not beating CVHS (let's face it, CVHS is a better version of the Rams esp @ QB & coaching staff). CVHS has players that can actually throw and catch.

John Harvey did a Nice Job reporting on Another Student Athlete in the Northern Region that will have an Opportunity to Further his Education and Play Football at the Next Level...For Clarity and Fairness to all Parties..

Quotation Marks around a statement mean the Individual being Reported on provided that Statement.

No Quotation Marks, the reporters Words

The Westfield Defense was Led by All-State Players:
Kevin Petrillo
Aaron Daise
Zach Jewell
Joey Free
Nolan Cockrill (3 rivalry games & play-offs)

Jewell in fact was the Team Leader in Sacks, tie-ing or Breaking School record with 15.5 on year.

Additionally the Defense had key Contributions from; Logan Demoney,Naz Calhoun, Eric Schweiger, Cole Roberson, Hunter Lydic, Taylor Morin, Israel McLean, Sadhiq Hinton, Nick Delvechio, Russ Steinhilber and Ladarian Rivers. A Concerted Team Effort aided by "The Leg" and a Coaching Staff that always had them prepared.

Not sure what point it is you're attempting to make.

Point: The "Facts" are the "Facts" Nothing More, Jewell who had an Unbelievable Season lead the Team in Sacks. It wouldn't have taken much research to know that.

Returning from that arbitrary list are:

Cockrill
DeMoney
Schwieger
Morin
McLean
Hinton
DiVecchia
Steinhilber

Assuming they all play football this fall.

Broad Run parent here. The Ram the posted on Robinson making it to the finals against Centreville obviously meant to post that at The Onion.

They rolled over and died in the Varsity game last year. No fight, no size, and what is worse... no talent.

If our QB wasn't already defeating the Varsity and played in the JV game, the Spartans would have won that game going away as well.

.500 team, talent, and coaching.

Actually, coaches are dirty so I put them even lower.

How exactly are the coaches dirty? I have never heard anyone make accuse them of anything even remotely out of line. In fact, the parents I know from Robinson feel it is the exact opposite, that they try too hard to walk the straight and narrow. What do you know?

Okay, but if you're referring to the original article it wasn't about Westfield, it was about Cockrill. Jewell, Petrillo, Johnson, Delaney, Free, etc. have already had articles about them. It's now onto the upcoming graduating class which there seems to be only one who currently holds any offers. Not to be an ass but when you talk about current Westfield football, with the exception of Cockrill, every other kid in my post is technically no longer part of the program.

Not to be an ass either however, the Author erroneously attributed Statistics to another player. I don't work for Recruit Nova or Mr. Harvey they may however send my Editing Check to Oscar Smith Football O.T. Winning Fund.

How come nobody is talking about South Lakes. They return everyone from last year and this is the best class they have had since 2010.

Could this be South Lake's year to make it to the 6A Northern Regional Finals? Really? You say it's the best teams since 2010? Ok, who are the top players, any of them have DI , Ii, III offers?

Is this the same South Lakes team that was beaten like a drum by Westfield 42-12 in this past seasons 6A Championship?

Before you go there, yes, WF graduated a good number of solid players. But they did so going into last season, and the season before, and before, etc.. That's just in case your reply was going to have something like, "WF lost a lot of talented players, may be a down year".

Totally agree. Robinson gets a lot of hate about how they use cut blocking and their general physicality, but none of it is illegal. They play by the rules. I live in the community and the parents seem to really like the staff as people. They don't always agree with who starts or what plays are called, but I never heard a negative word about their character. They have lots of kids out for the team and the kids seem to happy to be a part of the team. That says a lot to me.

Injuries and not having the right players in the right position until later in the season. As we bulldogs know, it's how you play in the post season, not at the beginning.

Westfield was in a bit of funk following the highly emotional SoCo game. They did not turn out very well for the TCW, SB and BW games. And vs ROB. This was a stretch of games where they battling some significant injuries leaving them without 4 or 5 key starters for every game.

Combine that with well coached and highly motivated teams looking to knock off the defending state champions and/or get revenge for the previous seasons losses and they just did not get the job done. And SB was a state runner-up so that was a darn good team.

The ROB game was the turning point of the season. After that come-from-behind win they did not have another close game until OS. Actually, I take that back, MAD gave them a good battle.

In sum, they got healthy and kept getting better every game. Their week 15 team would have soundly beaten their week 6 team.

Can't believe no one else is backing up dude's claim about Robinson teaching dirty tactics. Cut blocking is one thing, but cut blocking and diving into an occupied lineman's knees is absolutely ridiculous. THEY do teach it, and have for at least the last three years. This is high school. You don't try and win at all costs. Kids have had their seasons ruined by this bullshit. Ask the coaches who play them every year. They know what is up. You think it is fun to see your kid taking on the center one on one, only to have the guard roll into his knee? Not one of the line coaches would hold up on a lie detector. They used to be good. Now they know that they don't have the talent, so they play dirty.

Oh, and the excuses that rolled in about why Westfield lost to Briar and Stone Bridge? Pretty damn funny. You want the truth? The Westfield coaches are better than the 6A coaches that they have to compete against. Talent is close, and if you look back, you would see that Westfield hasn't produced a whole lot more college kids than some of the other top programs. They struggle with Loudoun because Loudoun has similar athletes and top notch coaches. The staff at Westfield almost always take apart a team when they play them a second time. Look at the stats and you can see. A close game in the regular season will be a blowout more often than not in a rematch in the playoffs. And anyone who watched a lot of high school football last year will tell you that 6A was down throughout the state. That helps explain why Stone Bridge manhandled them. Stone Bridge only lost the state because Thompson called for a draw on his own 30 on 4th and 8 when he was already up by 14... and because they had to play Highland Springs instead of a weaker Oscar Smith team.

Boom.
