Any information on this man from Centerville? Seems like Arlington Police might have provoked the entire Chase and shooting. I think he is white and was shot by a black policeman. I hope there is a thorough investigation with as much video as possible. Thanks.

My gosh! Just looked up his record on Fairfax County district Court. Not pretty! 2 full pages! Probably should have been in prison. Must have great Lawyer. Sorry for the bad news on Mr Boak but you asked. Still a very sad ending for him. There's always time to change your bad habit's. It's too bad Fairfax County Courts let Mr Boak down. Should have been in jail or rehab

I looked at both traffic/criminal and civil and not seeing this guy. I'm familiar with looking it up on the VA court system. What is your source with the long rap sheet?

Yes I understand the name. I searched, even just for Boak. there is also a guy who is in his 50s (deceased) with that same name. I searched Fairfax Co circuit courts and googled and just say some drug charge and larceny for less than $200

damn.. dude obviously didn't have a license, hence running over a cop. seriously, how do you fuck up this much in a vehicle? Other charges, fail to obtain a prescription by fraud (so he's an opioid addict), bullshit weed charges.. ding dong if you do drugs or sell them um follow the traffic laws. good riddens... saved the state money.

This guy just kept getting arrested every fucking couple of months since 2007. He has 1 felony charge coming up in Arlington and 1 felony charge in Fairfax. This could have been his way of purposely ending his troubles. No violent arrest's on his record. Just stealing,drugs, reckless driving and a lot of traffic offenses. 1 charge was going 101 in a 55.

Just go and search traffic/criminal Fairfax county courts: boak then daniel* .. include the asterisk. It won't come up just typing in the last name or his name for whatever reason--perhaps due to the fact that gov search sites suck arse.

He was a white guy, late twenties. Lived in centreville with a much older female roommate he shared a townhouse with. His dad owns the townhouse he lived in as well as his own home next door. He has been on and off drugs pretty much his whole adult life. He did a part time lawncare service, but was addicted to heroine (and possibly other things). He must have been some kind of impaired when he got pulled over and simply panicked. Does anyone know the condition of the officer(s) who were hurt?

Dan was a good guy with a lot of problems in his life. Yes he was arrested many times for non violent stuff. I can't understand what has happened. He was never a violent person. He was very nice and passive. I wasn't there so I have to go on the "story" that Dan pinned a police officer against another car. Not his character. Anyway. In closing Rest in Peace Dan! God Bless.

Not violent? Opiates make you violent over time. Paranoid and change your personality. That person you know was suppressed. Accept reality of what these drugs do. People who do opiates for recreational purposes has some common characteristics that are toxic to be around 1.) instability both environemental and I propose biological to some extend.. leading to 2.) Poor judgment and assessment of social norms and consequences 3.) High propensity for drama. They are bored if they don't have this drama-redemption cycle at all times. Whether it be environmental it doesn't matter in the fact of actions on others 4.) Can't deal with any mental/emotional pain. They choose to check out while others forge ahead and learn lessons. Pain is a part of life. Grow up and get used to it 5.) inability to take responsibility for their own actions. Victimization is high in these people.
Now there are people who have had chronic pain issues and get hooked. They are more likely to beat it. But it changes the brain. Your friend or a person you think you knew isn't that person. You are an enabler. Only way to deal with an opiate addict is to cut them off. There are many resources now. Unfortunately it really changes who you are as a person. If the new generation of idiots doesn't get that then they failed at life. Don't do opiates. It's like doing crack in the 80s. Not cool, low class. As someone who didn't have many resources and went through hell and back I did the work over years. Deal.

Goddamn fucking Judges and Fairfax should have made sure he was getting help long time ago. All those arrest's only got him locked up a month or two. Should have been in a state rehab or ADC for a year. ADC sucks. I know. It is cramped and can be violent. They thought they were doing him a favor by not locking him up when in fact they were adding fuel to the fire. Our judicial system needs to check itself now!

the problem with rehab and opiates is the incident of relapse. People who do opiates need very close monitoring for a couple years. They should be required to cut contact with any non-family member who has a history of drug use and all their devices should have to block said people. Sure they can go find the person but when it is a text or call away it's too tempting. Or possibly move X number of miles away. Sorry, but if you do opiates you should lose certain rights because of what you do to society and people around you. They should also have to check in or have some voice recognition thing that detects their slow speech. Even if you speak low or slowly there's something very distinct about an opiate user's intonation. It would be ideal to have drug testing stations that could be automated with high levels of accuracy. Hell I'd be all for video monitoring 24/7 which could be reviewed if their behavior comes into question. And they should have to take some kind of anti-depressant for life. Wish we could implant people with something where it does some kind of drip yet will not bust open if damaged. Moreover, they should be required to work in a capacity that contributes to society... easy predictable stuff at first.
I've known 3 people who relapsed over time, their families paying lots of money for "good" rehab programs. They refused to acknowledge how their associations affect their attitude and behavior. They arrogantly think they are in control and have little impulse control or forward thinking. The drug changes their brains and amplifies poor decision making.
How many times does someone have to go into rehab at the cost to tax payers just for it to fail? They have to be able to function day to day in their environments with close scrutiny, preferably with automated technology to cut out the need for human error and paying more employees. I mean can't they put an ankle monitoring device on them to test for drugs? I'm seeing some newer products like this. Seems like a no brainer instead of wasting money in and out of court and prison.. and the cost to society as a whole. Even if you didn't get an alcohol related conviction you shouldn't be allowed to consume alcohol which impairs judgment and messes up body/brain chemistry.

You raise some good points with rehab. The bottom line is this guy needed to be in jail. The Fairfax Adult Detention Center. He squirmed his way out the last 10 years and for some reason the Goddamn Judge's treated him different than the average person with that many arrest's. Was he extremely rich? I feel if he did a year or so in jail with all those rough dudes in there he may have gotten a wake up call. Was he a real small guy? Maybe the Judges felt he wouldn't survive in jail? I don't know.

I came across this article. Here's the problem with these two who were in and out of rehab, especially Shanks.. never did they think they should delete each other's numbers and commit to cutting off all contact. Someone who commented on the article says they weren't really best friends growing up but had reconnected due to shared drug use in recent years. Sure he can find it somewhere else, but he didn't do himself any favors by having contact. And you will see in the family text message exchange that he becomes irate because he's not trusted. Correct you are not trusted and never will be again-- it comes with the territory based on your life choices. I went through this with a former friend and he'd become angry that his family questioned his choices. Of course, they will question you and you should be willing to be questioned and humble when you commit to sobriety. Arrogance is a point that should be a huge part of rehab discussion.

I also saw where states are stepping up the use of ankle monitoring. They shouldn't be so easily removed either. Only 45 days of ankle monitoring? At least a year or two I say. Full cavity search so to speak once you go into recovery. It is not realistic to make everyone else pay for rehab which really has to be completed in minimum six months.. there have to be very solid boundaries in place and consequences for accomplices-- like leaving your medication around for them to steal--sorry grandma but ignorance is not an excuse once you've been briefed on the situation. Problem is enforcing that would be tough. Drugs can be obtained in jail IF you are willing to trade for sex. If you are willing to do this then you are either beyond help or have to go through that traumatic experience to hit bottom.

Did some research on Mr Boak. Started a landscape company in 2014 Live lawn and Prosper. Looked like he was a good guy and we'll liked by friends and customers. Looked at his Facebook photos. Looks like a small guy who looks older than 28. Damn a shame he is dead. I do blame Fairfax County for not locking him up and forcing him to get better. My guess is that he was a nice guy and the stupid Judges were way too lenient on him. Tough love is better than no love.

The opioid and meth epidemic are so bad no one should "keep it to yourself" and have dealt with someone with the addiction(s). There isn't enough exposure or discourse. Instead the focus is on the event, not what lead up to it. When you are an addict the impact on society is tremendous and you open yourself up to public scrutiny. Your guilt and shame are natural, but forums didn't do this to your loved one they did.

I was a customer of Dan's for a few years. I'm also a counselor and have worked in several capacities in the system. I couldn't agree more that he needed some consequences and rehab. I suspected substance abuse from Dan when he went MIA with the business and I actually urged him to seek help. When I saw this news, it really hit me. I worked closely with Arlington PD in the past, and they are extremely well-trained and pull their weapons as a last resort. I couldn't believe that the polite, genuinely kind young man who had gone above and beyond for me in the first year of his business (when I assume he was clean) was the same one I read about. He is a textbook example of how badly drugs can destroy a life. I don't know what demons he was fighting and why he was drawn to drugs, but I do believe he had a kind heart when he wasn't using. As a community, we really need to turn this opiate problem around. It is destroying lives. Enough with the judgement; rather, let's figure out how to break the cycle and rehabilitate people. Fairfax needs more drug courts, like many neighboring jurisdictions have. If people stay in treatment for over a year, their chance of maintaining recovery increases, and their recidivism decreases. It's so sad to see a good-hearted guy go out like this. If his family and friends see this thread... you're in my prayers.

Very well said! This is a tragedy that could have been avoided with better Governing at the County and State level. From what I have gathered Dan was a great guy. He just needed some type of discipline. Jail or treatment. Thanks.

Very well said! This is a tragedy that could have been avoided with better Governing at the County and State level. From what I have gathered Dan was a great guy. He just needed some type of discipline. Jail or treatment. Thanks.

Only thing that irks me is dude got off light on all those charges- had he been a brown person he would have been locked up ON the first theft/drug sales charge for YEARS.

He is also in Arlington Circuit Court files. He just went to Court on a felony charge of possession of controlled substance. The judge gave him 2 years in prison with 2 years suspended. This was in March which was 2 months ago. He must have been really good in the courtroom. Most people with his record would have seen state prison. With that being said, it is now time to focus on where he was getting his Heroin or Cocaine or whatever the drugs he was doing. Track his cellphone records for DC phone numbers. Let's start getting these dealers put away.

IPOL even say it's legal to cross country lines while in hot pursuit of a dealer
and more attractive to partying whites but also gaining recognition as life wrecker as bad to be in town as heroine is: meth. meth addicts kill others and themselves, it's cheap (heroine isn't), and the users cannot tell their body is becoming a wreck (while heroine users know but are extremely addicted, and try to forget by taking a next fix).

it's not the 80's anymore and drug use (i think?) has fallen way off of what it had been - so i'm guessing hard drugs are likely extremely hard to come by in fairfax

Do we know if he was under the influence of drugs when he was shot? I haven't heard anything about this. I hope they are checking all his phone numbers on his cellphone and trying to get the dealers who sold him the drugs.

To those criticizing his family: They tried what they could to help Daniel, but there's only so much you can do for someone who doesn't want to be helped.
When speaking to him, Daniel was a very kind man, very funny, and fine to be around. He did, however, make very poor choices (as anyone can easily see from his record and drug addiction). I enjoyed getting to know him.
No, he didn't come from money and his father didn't buy his way out of jail. Yes, the entire chase, accident, and shooting was his fault. For those asking, the police had entered his license plate into the system while on patrol which showed that the owner of the vehicle had an outstanding arrest warrant.
His family had thought he was getting help at the time of this shooting so for them this entire thing was completely out of the blue. The Boak's are a wonderful family and this is a tragic loss for them.

Just looking over some old papers and found a hand-created thank-you note from Daniel. I mentored him in elementary school at London Towne. So - this note is over 15 years old.

Definitely a drug addict but did they need to unload so many rounds in him? Arlington Courts said yes. Any surveillance? Body cam? All police are equipped with body cam now. I need to see the shooting. Anybody know where to find it?

How do you know his family knew he was looking help? Family would not normally speculate in such a public forum. I am sad about his passing and won't try to say what his family knew; it is tragic, no matter the circumstance.

Justified shooting was ruled in court. He was pinning a police officer to another car supposedly. She feared for her life and shot him 5 times.

I beg to differ! From what I heard he was a big time drug addict. Heroin was his choice drug as well as Oxycodone Xanex and Cocaine. He acted very polite and nice when he wanted. He was able to sweet talk the Judge and prosecutor about a hundred times to stay out of jail. If he talked like a nigger or wigger he would have been in prison where he belonged for his own good.

Dan was a cool guy who had a sickness which was drugs. Yes the system let Dan down 110 percent. Should have been a little bit of tough love where you lock someone up until they sober up and detox. Dan was able to manipulate these idiots in Fairfax and look what happened to him.
