Deeds was not really the most-favored Democrat of the Virginia Democrat Party anyway, he was a dark-horse winner. Pair that with normal backlash against the ruling national party and you end up with a very uphill climb for Deeds.

If McDonnell wins, we'll give him 90 days to implement his plans and if not complete by then, he should be considered a failure. That's the same treatment Obama is getting from the batshitcrazy GOP.

I think Deeds would be a better fit for VA, in the mold of Mark Warner, who was a successful Democratic Governor. Who was the last successful Republican governor? It wasn't Mr. Macaca, was it?

The problem is that Va Dems had few options. Brian Moran is a liberal loudmouth who would NEVER have won except in the most blue of counties/cities in VA (Alexandria, Arlington, Falls Church City, and Petersburg). Republicans voted for him because they would have guaranteed a McDonnell landslide.

Terry McAuliff was the most astute of the three candidates in terms of political machine, but Virginia does not like carpetbaggers and Terry McAuliff fit that title perfectly. He also had never held a state political office in his life. So while results-driven Dems liked him, he was viewed as a partisan hack who would turn off independent voters and be perceived as a negative.

Deeds was the 'aw shucks" candidate from rural Virginia who was the only viable option.

I hate to say it, but you are setting yourself up for some serious disappointment come election night. Unfortunately, Deeds just ins't doing enough to prove to voters why he should be elected. The poll numbers and people in his own party are telling him to give voters a reason to vote for him and for some reason he and his campaign staff are too stupid to figure this out. He really needs to bring in a more seasoned campaign manager these last few weeks if he expects to win. The fact that the President can't make a 15 minute trip to campaign for him tells you that the Deeds campaign is in the shitter.

The only people that I know who support Deeds are the diehards who support anybody who has a D next to their name. Thats the best way to lose an election since I have a hard time seeing moderates and undecideds being impressed by the entire Deeds negative campaign. Many will probably not vote or go third party before they support this sinking ship.

I kind of like the idea of privatizing liquor stores.

I have a bunch of money lined up between me and a few friends. If he wants to sell us the existing ABC store in our town, or if he wants to close them and sell licenses for private liquor stores, we're all set.

Because VA is moonshine State and before ABC stores there was a ton of bootleg and counterfeit liquor being sold in VA stores and bars. The ABC stores guaranteed Virginians that the alcohol was coming directly from the original distillery.

That's why Virginia also has very strict laws on bars buying alcohol only from ABC stores. Bars are also required to keep and provide proof of all tax stamps on bottles. Any bottle in a bar without an ABC tax stamp is a fine.

Virginia and its next governor is the deficit in transportation funding projected at $100 billion over the next two decades -- and only Mr. Deeds offers hope for a solution. Following a road map used successfully in 1986, he would appoint a bipartisan commission to forge a consensus on transportation funding, with the full expectation that new taxes would be part of the mix. Mr. McDonnell, by contrast, proposes to pay for road improvements mainly by cannibalizing essential state services such as education, health and public safety -- a political non-starter. And rather than leveling with Virginians about the cost of his approach, as Mr. Deeds has done, Mr. McDonnell lacks the political spine to say what programs he would attempt to gut, or even reshape, in order to deal with transportation needs.

Mr. Deeds has run an enormous and possibly fatal political risk by saying bluntly that he would support legislation to raise new taxes dedicated to transportation. It is a risk that neither Mr. Kaine nor Mr. Warner felt they could take. But given that the state has raised no significant new cash for roads, rails and bridges in 23 years, Mr. Deeds's position is nothing more than common sense. It is fantasy to think that the transportation funding problem, a generation in the making, will be addressed without a tax increase. A recent manifesto from 17 major business groups in Northern Virginia, calling for new taxes dedicated to transportation, attests to that reality.

Yet Mr. McDonnell, champion of a revenue-starved status quo, remains in denial. He professes to feel the pain of Virginians struggling with financial hard times. In fact his transportation policy, a blueprint for stagnation and continuing deterioration, would subvert the state's prospects for economic recovery and long-term growth. And it would only deepen the misery of Northern Virginia commuters who already pay a terrible price -- economic, personal and psychological -- because of the state's long neglect of its roads.

Don't worry, Deeds will have plenty of time on his hands come November as he sits in traffic like the rest of us.

On a conference call with reporters this afternoon, they faulted Deeds for not having a plan to ease traffic congestion in Northern Virginia.

"It was disappointing when we met with Creigh Deeds that not only didn't he have a plan, he also said he was not in favor of using any general fund money for transportation,'' said lawyer Stuart Mendelsohn, chamber chairman. "He objected to even using bonds for transportation and I don't know how you are going to do any of this without bonds."

McDonnell's "plan is working toward a solution, whereas Mr. Deeds has not proposed a plan, and we had no way of really comparing what the two had to say,'' said Fran Fisher, chairwoman of the NOVABizPAC, the chamber's political arm. "He hasn't been clear about what his plan is ... after numerous times of direct questioning. He hasn't spoken about how he would use those funds. He hasn't spoken specifically about how he would raise the funds. All he will say is vaguely that he will be willing to raise additional taxes but not leaving any other alternatives."

The Chamber has never officially endorsed McDonnell, that is spin from McDonnell advertising. Deeds has presented his plan and the Washington Post has endorsed his plan over McDonnell because Deeds can pay for his plan.

The PAC trustees made their decision following an exhaustive research and interview process, during which the records, positions and statements of the two Virginia gubernatorial candidates were closely examined. The trustees conducted face-to-face interviews with both candidates and the Chamber hosted a Governor Debate marking a two decade long tradition as northern Virginia’s premier political event.

In the interviews conducted by PAC trustees, the two candidates were asked about the priority business competitiveness issues on the Chamber’s policy agenda: improved transportation infrastructure, economic development and tax policy.

The Fairfax CoC is not an auto-pilot Republican proxy in the same manner as the US CoC. While they are a tad tax-phobic, they do recognize that the state/local governments can help Fairfax become even more of an economic powerhouse.
