Lacey please don't ask those kinds of questions right now. Now is a time of mourning and remembrance, not a time to question why the family needs money to fully mourn their lost son. He took his life and now his family is in deep shock and despair. They need all the help they can get. I ask you to try and empathize with the family right now and just contemplate for a moment the fact that a young child just willingly ended their whole life story right when it was just startig to begin. The struggle he must have endured within himself must have been so great that after only experiencing 16 years of it he decided that he couldn't possibly take another day of his life. That is extremely saddening. I would just like you to contemplate the enormity of what has just occured.

Minjoo. This still feels so surreal right now. To me you were more than just a friend, you were like a brother to me. I'll never forget the times that we were together, and I'll cherish those moments for as long as I live. Rest in peace man, I'll miss you.

Minjoo, You were one of my close friends and one of the greatest people I've ever met. I still remember you taking me over to Woodson, back in 8th grade, to dance with me at Hip Hop Club. You were always kind and made everyone's day. My condolences go out to the Lee family, for Minjoo was one of the greatest friends I have ever had. Rest In Peace Minjoo.

He hung himself by the cemetery in the woods according to my sources. There needs to be something done about how depression and mental health is addressed at this school. I was in a very rough place last year and a counselor told me, "I don't know what to do, I can't help you." They gave my father a list of therapists but failed to help me utilize the ones at school. Once I stopped going, seeing I would receive no help, I was not followed up on. This school is not united. This school is not #cavstrong, everyone just looks out for themselves in my experience being here. People are forgotten, left alone and this school inevitably fails to protect its students. Does it not raise a red flag when so many students have taken their lives? Questions need to be asked and actions must be taken. How many more students have to take their lives for something to be done? My condolences are with his family and I wish I had the opportunity to meet him and prove to him life was worth living. You will not be forgotten, Minjoo.

You are so right!

4 years ago I suffered a loss, and the pain is beyond description. We returned home from shopping at Tyson's Galleria to find Harold dead on the floor of our kitchen.

Somehow Harold had gotten out of his hamster cage, and my yellow tabby cat(Rocky) had caught him, and chewed off his head.

So please be kind.

Please people. It is not the responsibility of our public schools to provide mental health care services for students. They are there to give guidance, be on the lookout for things and assist as they can. But it is up to the parents to take responsibility for their children. Don't blame Woodson.

Why not blame Woodson or FCPS? How many times does it happen at one school? This does not account for kids who went there and did it within three years of graduation. If this was a drinking, drugs, or bullying issue, they would be on it like flies on shit.

They let Yost ruin young man after young man for years. And, those ass kisser parents did not give a shit either. That coffee club should have been nuked.

Let this be another reason why our education system needs reform. FCPS along with school systems across the country put so much pressure on students with grades and tests. What ever happened to the days where school was a place you went to learn material so you could have a better understanding of the planet we live on. Nowadays, high school's emphasize memorization for tests, taking tons of APs, and maximizing GPAs. If this philosophy continues expect more suicides like this.

Condolences to friends and family.

This is a good reminder how much pressure is on these young people. This school and the parents place unrealistic demands on academic performance. Getting a 'C' anytime during your HS career is like a huge deal. It shouldnt be like that. You shouldnt have to be perfect for the 4 years you are in HS.

Please be kind to those around you, your kids and especially yourself. Amazing things await all these kids and you do not need a 3.0 or even 2.0 GPA to get them. we should stop judging by grades alone and look at the beauty of each individual.

1) Because providing mental health care for mentally disturbed kids is not their job. As taxpayer I am appalled by how much we already spend on school counselors and psychologists.
2) It is merely a coincidence that suicides are happening at one school vs another. These things go in cycles and in a few years we will be beating up another high school.
3) More importantly - WHY is it the responsibility of the FCPS if a kid commits suicide? WHY? Their suicide may or may not have ANYTHING to do with the school. Why isn't it their parents fault? Or their church's fault? Or their friends fault? Why does it have to be the school?

Condolences to his family, cant imagine what they're going through...

Those that want to blame the school, county or/and whoever you can think of need to grow up..... This was a extremely selfish act, very tragic, but selfish. IT IS NOT the responsibility of the school "staff" to identify, prevent and whatever else in situations like this. "Pressure".... geez, sorry for sounding insensitive, but thats weak..... Everything about this kid seems normal, compared to some of the less privileged areas in this country, you could almost say he was spoiled to a point. Those pointing the finger at FCPS, and no i have no affiliation with them, probably need to look at yourself first.... Those commenting on how much they loved this guy and will miss him, probably should've been the first to notice something was off. His friends and fellow students should be blaming themselves first before pointing the figure at someone else.

Sorry, but feel bad and have compassion for the family & friends, recognize that this IS a tragedy that is not only isolated to WTW or FFXC, but our nation as a whole. And in the end the one person to blame is this young man that can not be held accountable for his actions now....

I had an awesome counselor when I was at WTW, graduated in 2016. Teachers cared but kids were so competitive about grades. I didn't care, got into colleges and went away to party. The students can't compare themselves with other students only against their own best, that is the problem. Counselors and teachers don't want us taking 5 AP classes, they kept telling me to chill out and "enjoy HS" so I played ultimate frisbee and found other things to do. Still went to college and enjoyed high school. Look in the mirror.

Ill share something one of the counselors shared with my 8th grade daughter. She wants to take an extra course and is taking some advanced/honors classes. He said she should be careful about over extending because if she 'gets a 'C' its on her transcript." Meaning, even if she is challenging herself a single grade of C in her freshman year is a factor in her future.

Implicit in the advise is that its imperative never to get a 'C.' That is extreme especially in a competitive school like Woodson.

Im not blaming the counselor but the truth is that at Woodson everyone is shooting for UVA or better - that is a lot of pressure. I dont know if it exists elsewhere at FCPS but its alive and well at Woodson. Im not blaming the school for any of these tragic deaths but I am citing my first hand experience.

I have never met this person, talked to him, or even knew about him before today. So what the fuck do I care why or how he is dead? What do I care about him being "bullied." The only fact that matters now, especially in this place, is he is dead.

You must not come to Fairfax Underground very often, because if you did you'd know this is NOT the place to try to have memorials.

We here at Fairfax Underground have absolutely zero pity for any of the dead, regardless of the circumstances in which they die. The only thing we care about is feeding our own amusement in mocking the poor decisions by those that have foolishly departed. This is a public forum in which we have the right to mock you and the people you care about, and we will do so.

He WAS a real person indeed, now he is real nutrients for worms.

As I have previously stated, those of you who seem surprised and shocked by the reception this has received in this place has clearly not been here very long, and you don't seem to understand how this place works.

In the 7-8 years I have been here.. things have changed over the years.. the various rumor mills and annoying fucks come and go.

However, there is one constant, one thing over the many years this place has been alive.. and that is this:

We do not pity your dead friends, we instead feel it a necessity to mock them, and you.

The main problem at Woodson doesn't come from the school. It comes from the students. There is a high percentage of success driven parents who have raised a high percentage of hyper-competitive kids. Even kids who don't have that kind of family feel the pressure from their peers. They freak out because they didn't get a perfect score on the SOL. There is IS literally NO benefit to doing so other than bragging rights. The teachers and admins tell them over and over and over not to discuss test scores or grades, But do they listen? Of course not. Five minutes after the results are given, the kids who did well are bragging all over the place and anyone sees who isn't bragging. The school does everything in their proper to stop it. But, this school district has some truly scary parents who expect a ridiculous level of perfection and think their kids HAVE to take nothin but AP classes for their final two years. And heaven forbid a kid not get into William & Mary, Tech or UVA. THE WORLD MIGHT END. Not because the school says so ... I'm doesn't, at all. Quite the opposite ... Its some of the families and the kids who come from those families creating an incredible atmosphere of pressure and stress that affects everyone. The administration is not and never was the problem. And Jeff Yost certainly wasn't. He was a scapegoat. And wrongly blamed as this clearly and tragically demonstrates.

This is a terrible tragedy. And likely the result of a constellation of factors only one of which was the school environment. Mental health is just never as simple as "it's _______'s fault" mentally healthy kids make.it through schools and environments much worse than Woodson . And no one commits suicide who isn't mentally unhealthy - whether from bichemical.imbalance, medication side effects or illegal drug use. A healthy psyche simply doesn't commit suicide. The reality is, however, that the warning signs aren't always there or clear except.in hindsight. And that isn't the school's fault or his friends' fault or his family's fault. It's a tragic end to much too short a life, but there probably isn't anyone who deserves blame.

I want to say something to the snarking about raising funds for funeral expenses. I know nothing about this family's particular situation , But I can say with certainty that very few families save and plan fo THEIR TEENAGER'S funeral. This may even simply be someone's way of trying to do something nice for a family that has been devastated. If you can't be an empathetic human being, at least keep your thoughts to yourself. I don't care whether you donate or not, but quit with the immature and obnoxious snark about it. You don't actually HAVE to say everything you think is clever that pops into your head. Some of it is a lot LESS clever than you realize.

No parents ever expect to have a funeral for their children because they hope that their children will live long enough that their parents go first. I can't believe you're so cold. Would you have created a funeral savings account when your child was only 16? No one wants to prepare for that.

- Hi Mr. Yost! Or, you dimwitted ex-coffee sipping Yost ass kisser.

He left a legacy that started when he was VP. He was ruining lives then. So, what did FCPS do? Promote the sadistic phony, not on my watch. Any idea how many boy were thrown out versus girls? How many were in LD vs the bell curve? More kids went from WTW to other schools for discipline than any other school. Who took in the least???? Yeah, go figure. The school stats were more important than students needs esp if you were out of the bell curve or no a coffee sipping yenta.

-Blame the kids? Only the kids at WTW are stressed about grades? What a dimwit. Yost would have thrown you out too. Why not at TJ?????, you dimwit? Parents and kids are not stressed there about grades? What are you smoking???

-I'll buy your rope you idiot!!!!

I have life insurance policies on all of my 3 children that attend FCPS Schools.

I have these policies on them because you never when one of them is going to OD, shoot themselves, die in a car wreck, hang themselves, or get killed in a drive by shooting.

I have my 2 oldest children attending W.T. Woodson, and each death will have will have a 250K death benefit.

As a nurse practitioner and WTW parent, I would argue that our school system is RESPONSIBLE because it takes a village. Kids spend the majority of their waking lives at school or performing work for school. The teachers at WTW know that homework is a problem and yet most don't do anything to fix it. FCPS also has a teacher task force to look at homework loads, but it's been stalled for two years. The WTW Director of Student Services, Dr. Carlin Floyd, gets it, but most of the administration at WTW and in FCPS Central Administration have their head in the sand. It's time that parents and students STAND UP and make their voices heard! Pleas consider honoring Minjoo's life by making a difference and start Speaking Truth to Power.

Funerals are very expensive, and many working class families don't have enough money or savings to pay for one. According to the Fairfax County Government website, in our area, a simple funeral can cost $10,000.

Your absolutely right! I graduated from WTW long ago and I don't recall any of these problems with suicides back then. In my day AP courses were minimally offered. I didn't know anyone that took them. I still went to college etc. This excessive competition is at many our our schools not just WTW. I see it at my daughter's school which is a few miles from WTW.

I have heard from students and a teacher at a neighboring high school that you should avoid regular classes (if you have the aptitude)because you will be amongst less studious students that disrupt the class and hold the stronger students back.

OK. Thats complete and total BS but explain to me how WTW is any different than any other school in FCPS. Baffling to me that WTW parents think their school is so special and so much different than other FCPS high schools. I know my kids would be shocked to learn that their high school (not WTW) does not have a culture of high academic expectations.

Montgomery County Schools - Walt Whitman, Winston Churchill, etc are better academically than WTW - and should be just as much a pressure cooker as WTW, but they aren't. The difference is money. They will send their kids out-of-state to college without blinking an eye. Talk to any WTW - area parent and they moan and complain about the cost of in-state and most refuse to consider out-of-state (sadly many of them would rather renovate their kitchen or buy another SUV) There is just not enough space at Va colleges - the ones' anyone wants to go to - just not enough room. It's not changing. And these kids have worked way to hard to end up at a no name school nobody outside of Va has ever heard of. Send them to a respectable out of state National University. Look at demographic trends, know which areas of the country NEED students. Know this ahead of time. Plan a reasonable courseload for your high schooler - - it's not hard to graduate from high school - it really isn't.

There are 15 public and close to 50 private colleges/universities in Virginia. Why would anyone parent waste their money going out-of-state, even a "respectable out of state National University". unless it offers a program not available in-state or a full scholarship. And I'm not talking about tuition cost alone, there's also travel costs involved. A Virginia student can get into any of the 15 public and 50 private in-state colleges/universities. It may not be UVA, WM or VTech. And that is problem when parents push their kids to get into one of these three colleges.

Both of my kids attended four years at Woodson. One graduated last year from a respectable in-state public university (and no, not one of the "three colleges"). And the other graduates from the same school in May. Saved myself a bundle of money paying in-state tuition, so now I can afford to buy that SUV and remodel the kitchen. And my kids don't have any student debts either...pretty sweet.

I agree. People want to put their heads in the sand. We all need to brainstorm and talk and tell the kids we care....teachers, parents, friends
, administration.....do the schools even know the names of their students?? I can tell you the answer is no .... It is heartbreaking... they focus only on certain students in certain groups and constantly praise them...the other children are doing things quietly, correctly and they are constantly overlooked ... Aggression throwing your classmate under the bus not doing the right thing seems to be rewarded .... I've seen this type of behavior and parents as well .... It makes our children feel confused and isolated ...Kids feel incompetent ...shame on the school leaders....parents tell the schools that their children are in crisis and they ignore the do not communicate properly with each other they hand parents a piece of paper with resources there is no follow up they say there's nothing they can do but it's a bunch of baloney

This is not the fault of Woodson or other schools. Their responsibility is to teach our children about academic subjects, and they do that.

Tendency towards depression can be genetic. All children, both with and without this tendency, need to be taught by their parents how to deal with the issues which give rise to suicidal thought. Parents need to teach their kids that they are not always going to be the best at everything, and how to cope with failure/defeat, and that suicide is not the answer.

This is not the school's responsibility. It is ours as parents.

Parents need to slow down, pay attention to their children and talk to them regularly, and at length, about what is going on in their lives. They need to teach their kids coping skills, and reassure them EVERY DAY that they are heard, they are important, they are loved, and that life is tough sometimes, but it will get better. Parents should also discuss suicide openly, and let their kids know that it devastates those left behind to deal with their decision.

These suicides will continue as long as we as parents expect our schools to do our jobs.
