What are your opinions of the Sleepy Hollow neighborhood of Faifax?
Posted by: Icobod ()

I drove through it on occasion if I need to get from Leesburg Pike to Columbia Pike, and i think it's rather quite nice. Beautiful scenery, homes, congressional camp is in the woods. It being in Fairfax the schools are probably shite, but I would more or less consider buying a home there. Any other opinions?

Nice but you have Glasgow and Stuart...which have changed a lot. Sleepy Hollow Elementary was great. Neighborhoods are nice. Malbrook/Van Winkle.

Nice neighborhood but most of the houses need to be torn down. Many look like shacks and most lack a two-car garage which is basic with all the crime.

The farther away from Leesburg Pike or Columbia Pike you are, the better it is. I would only move there if it was a lake front home. The schools suck, so you will need to budget in a private school costs. Waterfront homes start from the low $1M range.

What tubes? You ever seen any tubes? And why is there always more than one tube?

Those are homes that replaced the original "shack". We looked into purchasing a house on Sleepy Hollow Road. The original owner had died and his family was selling the property. The house had a two-story addition that was set up as a dental practice. Too much remodeling would be needed to make it functional. It sat on two 1-acre lots on a corner.

LR, The bottom house was built in the 50's..all original and was cool as shit. Has a huge pool. I went to a party there many moons ago. The top one built in the 80's. Depends on your taste. Those houses were built very well, and had large lots.

I like the one on the bottom too. I prefer that style of home, but houses of that era only have 8ft ceilings, etc.

True, But many of the Mid Century moderns have vaulted ceilings and tons of glass-that face the rear of the property.

Unfortunately it's a cesspool of spics in that area. That's why private schools are doing so well.

Not in the neighborhoods of Sleepy Hollow/Barcroft/Malbrook/Van Winkle. Culmore-7 Corners-Jefferson Village yes.

Someone mentioned it was a nice place 50 years ago.

That is 1967....doesn't seem that long ago, if you are old enough.

But, same terms, if that was said to me growing up- "50 years ago" that would have been like the 1920's.

Wow.

Pimmit hills is in a better location, with much better schools. Otherwise, yes the nice Nature-esk surroundings and larger homes of Sleepy Hollow is nicer. I cross shopped the 2 neighborhoods when buying, ended up going with neither one.

By Patricia Davis; Robert O'Harrow Jr.February 19, 1997

A Fairfax County private school teacher was charged yesterday with binding the mouth and hands of a 2 1/2-year-old preschool student with masking tape, and the head of the school and another administrator have been charged with failing to report suspected child abuse, police said.

Fairfax police said they believe Maryam A. Setser, 29, assaulted a boy in the preschool program at the Congressional Schools of Virginia in Falls Church around Jan. 10.

Sleepy Hollow is still nice. There's some cute houses on Holloman Road and Kennedy Lane. Some are beautifully landscaped and others have been bought by foreigners who give their houses the immigrant makeover: Remove anything beautiful or decorative, like shutters flanking the windows and azaleas planted next to the house, chop down all shade trees, etc. Still, some of the houses have been well maintained and remodeled and updated inside.

Modern buyers probably will be disappointed as the original homes were built with smaller bedrooms and without the open floor plan that modern parents demand so they can watch their kid like a hawk.

As for schools, anyone with any sense should homeschool anyway.

Not too far over in Arlington, there's some cute houses in the areas of S. Carlin Springs Road.

Not really, Marshall is the ultimate wanna be school that will never match up to The other schools in the area and Pimmit still looks like crap with its gross mix of crap shacks and McMansions full of tech support visa holders.

Real mixed bag but lots of shacks. roads are in rough shape too. Congressional school has nice grounds if you can spare 25k/yr to send your child to k-6th. Personally I chose to buy a nicer (though vastly overpriced) home in the Woodson district. We have really poor value in housing in this area but the schools are good so its basically like splitting the difference between private school in a cheap part of the country with public school in this overpriced area.

We are out of here when the kids graduate - rip off. Drive down any street and see everyone living in 700k-million dollar homes driving 10-15 year old cars and needing new roofs. Absurd.

I checked out images through Historic Aerials of that cut off section of Sleepy Hollow Road. The two never connected. I imagine that there were plans at one point to connect them. If Columbia Pike was never rerouted, then we could have been the connection be built.

If money truly was no object to me, I'd be a nice home in that area and build a 10 foot wall around it. The kids would probably go to Paul VI, St. Thomas More etc.

Me and some of my boys broke in to a home, tied up the elderly people living there and robbed the place a year ago. I won't say exactly where. Made a good $20k. Thinking about raiding another house. Easy old white folks to rob from there.
