Sonoma and St. Augustine are both pretty nice. Is that it for nice places in America? California was nice, but prices in the decent areas are sky-high, and the rest is overrun with illegals, homeless leeches, and libnazis.

Damn right I'm not saying where I'm retiring to. Everyone has heard of this Country but hell if I'm saying which one. I've made contacts over there to make it easier for me once I retire. Have researched their laws as to how to become a citizen there.

You can't go anywhere without driving. It's unnatural. People are fearful, if not hostile to anyone they do not know. That is, except for people who are genuinely good people - but then they are the hardcore church-goers that will eventually invite you to join their flock. A kind denial of such an invitation changes things - then they are aloof and not as cool as they once were.

You can't win in this place. Unless you have kids and are so wrapped up in their lives, their sports, and things like that, it's not worth it living here.

I am going wherever there is ***not** a high concentration of military in the area.

Every time the BAH (basic housing allowance, the stipend soldiers get to get off base housing free from the government) gets raised (as it does every year), real estate prices in the area increase as well.

A private (new to the service) E01 gets $1,650 no kids, and up to $2,124 with kids/a wife (hence all the quickie marriages around here so they have a spouse and get dependent pay).

This is why all the apartment rents went up too, they know this. Now its hard to find a 2 bedroom place for <$1400 in the county unless you want to live on route 1.

People with actual jobs around here need to make upwards of $50k to even begin to afford the same apartment, the serviceman gets it for FREE.

When I was 15, I had a plan to move in with family I had in Italy, or go to Spain , France or Belgium for school. 15 years later, needless to say that plan went to shit. The paperwork and money involved with such a move is insane, and frankly I can't imagine living anywhere in the US other than here and maybe Boston. There is too much money to be made in the. It'd be nice move to a small town somewhere in Provence or the Netherlands.

The Netherlands is about as close to socialism as you can get. I have a friend who married a Dutch chick and moved there to raise a family. He loves it too but holy hell are taxes sky high, they literally openly embrace wealth distribution. Even poor unemployed people live like normal middle class. Great public transportation though and safe & clean cities. Guess it's not bad if you don't mind spending 50 cents of every dollar you earn on some kind of tax.
