I'm counting the days. I'm looking forward to leaving the traffic, the shitty weather, and the bland 1950's architecture behind. And especially the pretentious people who live in this area. We certainly have our share of pretentiousness in this area, don't we.

I came to this area 10 years ago to make grade and the additional income it afforded me. Concentrated entirely on getting promoted and making the most money that I could. My sole purpose was to juice up my retirement and move back to my home state of Montana upon retiring.
Looking back, that was a mistake.
Although I will have a sizable retirement to take back with me to Montana when I retire, I'm finding that, all in all, it probably wasn't worth it.
Living in this area has taken years off my life.
I should have stayed in Montana, settled for my modest income and retirement, instead of putting up with the heart wrenching crap I have put up while living in this area.
My bad move 10 years ago has probably taken 20 years off my life. Personally, I don't think putting up with what is considered the D.C. Metro area lifestyle worth it.
In my next life, I will X D.C. off the list.

I feel the same way you do. Trying to live in this area is a living hell. Worst mistake of my life coming to this area. Hell, having my car safety and emission inspected is nothing more than a kick in the balls, and the punishment the local government puts on you for living here. And I won't even mention the ridiculous price of housing, the traffic, and the lack of decent food establishments.

Leaving the D.C. Metro area has been a common thread on this forum for years. And for good reason. The DMV has probably got to be the worst place in America to live.
I have a good friend that used to live here, but retired a couple of years ago to Florida. He made a good living, had a nice house, and his kids received decent FCPS educations.
I asked him a year or two ago what he thought back on during his time in this area.
He replied, "The best day of my life was the day I sold my overpriced, shitbox Colonial, and headed South on I-95."
If I had to guess, I would imagine most people from this area feel that way.
I know I do, and can't wait to get out of fucking Dodge.
This place is the pits.

You can live at the DMV? You live in a Dodge? If it's a Neon, that's small shit.

Then get the fuck out now, you whiny bitches. You'll sit here and enjoy the first-class schools and public services, great restaurants, free museums and amenities, but bitch and moan about everything else. Go somewhere else and see if it's better. Start applying elsewhere. "But I'll make too little there" ... "I'll have to take a demotion there" .... "the schools for my kids aren't as good" ... there is a ton of upside to living in NoVa, you'd rather just whine and complain, woe is me. Get out now so those that appreciate it here don;t have to listen to your whining.

Some of us are trapped here. We may have been born here or do not have somewhere else we can go to. I fall into that category.
The lucky ones are those who came to this area knowing that it was only a temporary situation, that they knew they would be going "home" when their careers were complete.
Like I said, I was born in this area to parents who have since left the area, moving to much nicer areas of the country.
I can understand why my parents moved. They hated this area but bought into the economic prosperity it provided.
I am just thankful that I have the opportunity to visit the nice area to which my parents have moved.
Their goals have given me inspiration, and when the day comes, I, too, will get the fuck out of this shithole of an area.

I live in Fairfax Station, make a boatload of money, and fucking hate this area. What they pay me does not make it worthwhile to tolerate living in this area. What kind of a life is it that you have to set your alarm for 4:00 a.m. for a job that starts at 7:30, and you don't get home until after dark? No decent human being to be forced to live this way. And I won't even mention the traffic.

I can see how that would suck, Woodbridge is a nasty place to live. Places like Centreville, Burke, Springfield, most of PWC would suck to live in. But there are plenty of nice areas around here.

If you make under $100k and have no friends, you will be miserable around here. I live in Vienna and I love it, I'll probably get a small place in North Arlington when I retire.

Who forced you to live all the way out in Fairfax Station? I would love a 6,000 sqft house, but I settled for a 2,500 sqft house and a 30 minute commute, glad I did.

The best thing about wanting to leave this area is that you will have a sucker coming to the area that will pay more for your home than you did. The D.C. area is basically retard-ville. Those that survive and eventually leave are better off for it. I wouldn't wish this area on anyone. It fucking sucks.

Lived and grew up in north arlington and live in springfield now. I like it here better than north arlington so why are you lying?

What you like is completely irrelevant. There's a good reason why a home in North Arlington is twice as much as a home in Springfield.

I can't wait to move back to PG County. Less traffic, less b.s., friendlier people, much cheaper, better parks and recreational opportunities, closer to the Bay, Beach and Baltimore, and a 30-minute commute downtown.

I do know since i have a home there. Its closer location to dc makes it worth twice the cost of a similar house anywhere in fairfax. While growing up there the majority of peers in my north arlington schools were latino but houses still sold quicker than you could say illegal. Now say what of springfield? Its the up and coming arlington.

Looking forward to a more rural area someday, if it was not for now needing to be nearby (w/i 30 minutes) and caring for an elderly relative needing medical care in No. VA. Was thinking of the Lyft/Uber driver had one day in Reston living 20 miles from Front Royal, so rural her cell phone reception barely worked there.

The job that I have, that way underpays me, is terrific too! I have had to borrow money from my employer and my 401(k) just to pay the rent and feed my family. It's awesome!

I long to leave, but my wife is obsessed with my kids having to go to THE BEST SCHOOLS IN THE USA EVER or else my kids will become hoodlums or something. ALas, she's asian so thats the obsession...

I'm more of the position that moving somewhere else a bit cheaper (we both work at home 100%) would be better for our family, because if you aren't reasonably intelligent to begin with your performance in school won't be that high.

I agree, but my wife doesn't. Asian people are obsessed with the best schools, probably because of the old imperial examination system.

I remember when my townhouse was built 15 years back, i could have bought 2 single family homes built by the same builder in texas for the same total price.

Yep, in one year I get to leave here finally, back to a state and to a place where a townhouse will run me less than 600/month for a 2 bedroom instead of the $2400+ these matchstick fake wood tinderboxes go for around here. This area is only useful for one to stay until retirement. If you take care of your health despite all the added drama foisted upon you, you will still come away with a few years you can have to enjoy the rest of your life. Make it here and leave on out asap is the best thing. Your kids get their excellant education here while you still have to stay, then after that they can figure out how to go to work and fund their own higher education.
