Fairfax County government spending like drunken sailors

Is this the best place to post complaints about Fairfax County government?

I keep getting mail from Cathy Hudgins, Supervisor, Fairfax County. She is always bragging about how many new programs she starts and how much money she spends.

Such as:

"ACTION ITEMS

Action 1: Approved the sale of General Obligation Public Improvement Refunding bonds, Series 2009C and General Obligation Public Improvement Bonds. A total of $275 million of public bonds includes $118.6 million for County facilities and infrastructure, and $156.4 million for Fairfax County Public Schools. Sale of the approved bonds was accelerated to take advantage of the historically low bond market interest rate."

So the county has just allocated itself another $275,000,000,this time without even bothering to put it on a ballot.

Who cares about the voters, the democratic process, Fairfax County government needs more money, just float another bond. Who's going to pay for the other $3 billion in bonds? What's the yearly interest payment up to? Half a $Billion? So everyone in Fairfax County not only has a huge, burdensome federal debt, they also have the rapidly increasing Fairfax County debt.

Great they can spend like drunken sailors, other peoples' money.

Where does it end?

Keep voting for these economic illiterates, they will tax everyone to depression.

+100 people just don't get it. it is our money and we have to get them to stop. put a hold on renovating, building, or leasing anything. but can we stop it? no because people won't get off their asses to contact their board of supervisors or school board members and then thet'll bitch about the spending and haven't done anything to stop the spending. ridiculous.

When I was a kid and they were still in the Massey building, it used to be all about using two colors of paint on the police cars, and 40 foot long mahogany conference tables. I remember it was all over the news, WAPO had endless articles about it - taxpayers were up in arms over the excesses of the County government. Today it is like they robbed hundreds of banks (that would be us, the taxpayers) and they spend money on things today that would put those "atrocities" to shame. Hell just the graphics alone on each police car cost more then the old paint jobs did.

The marble Taj Mahal they built just made it clear that they were much more concerned about impressing everyone with their wealth then they were about "serving the public". If you are handicapped you still need a go-cart just to make it to the front door of the building, let alone actually getting to the office you need to find in the "shopping mall" of the County Government Center.

you're right. i grew up here too and remember when the overcrowding started and we had trailers at every school. guess what? we thought it was cool to get a trailer for a class or 2. now it's just spend, spend, spend on extravagance and so many unnecessary renovations and new schools. the way things are, it's got to stop. i'm pissed and going to do my part in voting any of these spenders out of office whenever i get a chance.

Yep, this anonymous forum is THE best place to post complaints about the government.

Also, how do drunken sailors spend? Is it carefully? I don't know because I'm pretty sure that's not a real expression...

It ends when Republicans stop their wild ass spend sprees with no income to pay it. So sick of Republicans saying no to tax increase, spending like crazy and then Democrats have to clean up after their mess.

Notice how most of us here were just talking about spending in general. That is the real problem. Democrats have controlled the County government for quite a while now - so I guess your stupid statement was just a defensive reaction to your own perception.

Fairfax County Public Schools makes up more than half of the County budget. The County Supervisors can only approve or disapprove of the budget number that goes to them. Its the 12 people on the Board of Education that are sinking the County and causing our taxes to keep increasing. They complain about a $176 million budget deficit on one hand and on the other hand they are planning on building a $50 million Middle School in South County and a $26 million Elementary school by Liberty Middle and nobody complains. If you or I owed huge somes of money, we wouldn't be out trying to build a new house we couldn't afford. Until people tell them to postpone building new schools until the deficit is under control, it will just go on and on.

Oh yes, it is so much better to teach in a trailer (a double wide at that) than in a real classroom...

If I hear one more self-righteous dipwad refer to the Government Center as the Marble Taj Mahal, I'm gonna blow my stack.

The total percentage of marble that is in the Government Center is less than 2%, the rest of the floorspace is carpeted, which is now almost twenty years old. Imagine twenty year old carpeting.

The marble floors are only in the areas where the public is found, so the effect is great for the general public, but it is not the Taj Mahal.

So let it go, the place is a shithole.

I just hate the way all the marble was used in the Taj Mahal(Gov Center). Did you also see the expensive carpeting they put in?

Other than the large, unsightly building that required the leveling of a forest, the first thing you notice is the huge (I assume) marble seal. Then when you walk in you are greeted with more marble. So yes, for the general public, it appears to be a shopping mall that was built to house government offices - that happens to have marble as one of its prominent features.

Compared to the Massey building, it is anything but a shit hole.

Wasn't there a lot of development in Lorton in recent years that necessitated the construction of new schools?

I think so. I also think everyone would agree the kids don't belong in trailers. Nobody is saying not to build schools. It just needs to be postponed for awhile until the deficit is under control. People are out of jobs and hurting right now and can't afford more taxes! This is the mortgage mess all over again - it is just the School Board is responsible now. If you can't afford a new school, don't buy it! Wait. We all have to make some sacrifices right now.

Right on, EJ. We, the people, need to get on both the Supervisors' and the Bd of Ed's case.

I gotta laugh at you morons. Such outrage at the FFX government!

Meanwhile, the Federal government wastes the equivalent of the entire annual FCPS budget EVERY FUCKING DAY occupying Iraq and Afghanistan. All in the name of "fighting turrah" while neither country had a damned thing to do with 9/11.

We never learn anything. We watched the Afghanis kill 150,000 Russian soldiers before Russia bailed. How many soldiers do we need to lose before we figure out that the Afghanis don't want their country occupied by anybody....Russians or 'Murcans! It's a Stone Age country that poses zero threat to the US.

I hate to tell you this Tubby, but they don't know what to do with the soldiers because if they bring them home we will have that many more people drawing unemployment. Many people believe it was WWII that actually ended the Great Depression. Wars generate jobs and money for many. It's a horrible fact but it's true. These deficits have got to come down or our kids are never coming home.

And that would be a ridiculous conclusion. There is nothing unique abour war or WW II to overcome a depression. What ended the depression was the deficit spending associated with the war. The same effect could have been had if our politicians had agreed to spend the same amount of money on buliding homes...cars...refrigerators. But then Roosevelt would have been accused of being a socialist and communist....oh wait...he was. It seems wars are a more democratic way to focus the nation on what needs to be done.

Republicans increase spending and greatly reduce revenue ultimately just causing massive damage to the economic system (see Bush Regan). Cutting taxes does not increase revenue. It doesnt work. Wish it did - it doesnt.

Both Parties spend money like we can just print it up (actually that is exactly what happens). The key is HOW you want your money spent. Bailing out banks, funding Blackwater and Iraq waste or on roads, schools, health care.

You robots thinking its the democrats are correct. That you think Republicans might be better might be true on the county and state level. Federally thought its the Republicans that lead us to financial ruin. Basically the House and Senate are bought and paid for by Corporations and work for them exclusively. It is sort of fun to play the "Republicans are better than Democrats or vise versa" but not so much really...

The Republicans haven't had their hands on FFX in what, 15 years?

The Republicans had their way in Washington between 2000 and 2006, and look what happened there. Worst job creation since HOOVER, ballooning deficit, and stuck in two wars with no real plan to win either (well, it took 'em what, five years to come up with the surge?) I just don't believe in rewarded incompetency, but I guess if it's our incompetents, it's ok.

The Republicans has their way in Richmond in the 1990s, creating a budget hole that Mark Warner had to fix.

So why would they suddenly start behaving themselves if given the keys to the Fairfax Government Center?

It's easy to be against government spending in the abstract. However, the concrete benefits are usually better-liked. Of course, you've always got the folks who think school renovation/building is a luxury and that trailers (which stop being cost-effective after a few years, IIRC) are the way to go. (and today, it's 'the economy,' in 2011 there'll be some other reason.)
