The kind they do not sell at box stores, hire a pro and get some grade 1 locks installed. If you have glass by the door, get double-cylinder dead bolts.

If you have sliders, get a security bars and/or something like this: http://www.homedepot.com/p/LOCKiT-Double-Bolt-Sliding-Glass-Door-Black-White-Lock-200100100/202953665 and consider security window film.

If you don't want a home security system, at least buy the sign/stickers on ebay.

Get a gun, and buy a good quality quick access safe for it.

Buy a gun instead. Once people know you have a gun, you are gold!

You can have them re-keyed cheaper. You can get them so they all the same key. Either call a locksmith to come to you or bring he locks to their shop (cheaper).

Avoid any lock that is Kwikset, Schlage, Defiant, or Brinks.

Easily bumpable, picked, or in some cases, opened with tryout keys.

Best to ask a locksmith for recommendations.

Also be sure to have strong basement windows if you have them, and especially if you purchased an older home.

About builders master keys in subdivisions especially older ones..Who cares how many Painters..GASP!..May have them..The Horror..Painters with Master Keys..! If the locks were changed or rekeyed the master will be gone..but how do you know??

Rekey the locks or replace them. You want to spend some money..Schlage A Series min.. D Series commercial even better, Corbin, Russwin, Sargent with Medeco special keyway lock cylinders from Baldinos or other locksmith that has their own special blanks. and have them install higher security door jamb strikes, the ones with long screws that make it harder to kick the door in.. Then you can spend $$ on a electronic security system..but not before the main line ..the locks. And the Locks are a whole lot cheaper!

That said its residential..Need more ..send a tweet to President Trump..ask him what they use in casino money handling areas..Or Ask the Fairfax County Sheriff what they use in the jail! Hint..Both places use Jamb mounted locks..Not in the doors..Folger Adam..Southern Security..others..way over 1000 + a pop and steel security door jambs special made for the locks, 2 inch think steel doors all in solid concrete or block filled with cement masonry. Cant have thugs kicking their way otta the joint or into the Cash Counting room..

No don't worry. This is a beautiful diverse low crime area and no need for that expense. Plus you would reduce your chance of a surprise meeting of someone from an exotic culture in your home. I just love learning about new cultures!

Yes, change the locks. No point in spending for expensive commercial grade unless you live amongst blacks. Baldwin makes nice locks for residential properties.

ASSA locks are very good.

Make sure you have steel reinforced doors and door frames, and blast/bullet proof windows.

That last part- keep in mind that the lock is usually not the weak link. Door frames are usually the thin, cheap pine and it is easir to push the door open that defeat a lock. Get a dog, build a rapport with watchful neighbors, loud sirens will scare people off. Locks are a small part of the overall security picture.
I never changed the locks on my house and haven't had any problems in 20 years of ownership.

My parents kept an extra house key hidden on their property. All us "kids" and several trusted neighbors knew about it. We forgot to retrieve the key after the folks died.
IF any of us were so inclined (we're not) we could easily get into the house.

Of course, you need to change your locks just in case. I'm moving from california to Virginia, and at my new house I'll change everything possible, and the locks are first in line. I don't believe people who don't care about the locks and say that it's no big deal. Like, robbery is a big deal, so with a simple change of locks, everybody can stop worrying.

Do yourself a favor and get a key pad lock. Then you can change the entry code rather then buying a bunch of keys. You can change the entry code as often as you like. If you are having workers come in then you can give them a code and cancel the code when they are done.

No need for locks.
Just leave your doors unlocked, and let the diverse population into your house, just like Biden lets in the illegal aliens on the Texas boarder.

No need for racist locks. I leave my doors and windows unlocked at all times so People of Color can have 24 hour access to our property and belongings. My wife and daughters love the constant stream of Soul Brothers and Beaners providing them sexual gratification.

Nowadays it’s not easy to find a professional locksmith that knows what and how he should do his jobs. If you're thinking about hiring a locksmith, compare their costs to those of their rivals. While it is sense to seek for the lowest price, a locksmith who provides a price that appears too good to be true is likely a locksmith who cares only about money, and not on qualitative work. One of my friends recommended to me Locksmith work with quality, during the work he explained everything he was doing, after the work was completely done my friends remained satisfied.

You should not bother with the locks. Just move. Virginia sucks.
