"Light signals change on Rt. 50 10/15/06"

There have been signs on Rt. 50 between route 28 and the parkway for a week that say:

"Light signals change"
"On Rt. 50 10/15/06"

At first I thought they were physically replacing the lights but that doesn't seem to be the case. Anyone know what they are talking about? Maybe timing changes?

They need to do this to route 28. This is, I believe, called a lagging left turn phase. WTOP's description isn't that good but that's what it sounds like. Essentially the left-turn arrow comes on in the direction of peak traffic flow near the end of the green phase. Drivers who are paying attention can use that as an indication that the green phase will soon be ending and compensate for it with their right foot..

One thing I found out is that VDOT has extended the PM rush timing on 28 until 7:30pm Mon-Thurs and till 8pm on Friday.

yes the fucking light costed $500,000 and is centrally controlled

it used to be Police would be in traffic and if they noticed the light was "simply in-opportune" they would park, adjust the light, and ramble on
