These are only the minors that arrived during the past two and a half years when Obama invited them into the country and literally dumped them in Fairfax County. This means that 2.5 cents of your $1.13 real estate tax goes exclusively to educate these kids and you get absolutely nothing in return except the additional bills to feed them at school, teach them English and treat them for their many emotional problems.

The numbers are; FY2014 - 1,373 FY2015 560 FY2016 1,321 and FY2017 671 for a total over this period of 3,925.

The average cost per pupil, excluding ESOL and Special Education is $11,450 and the ESOL cost per service for FY17 is $3,745 (see Question #47 p. 126)

So, $11,450 + $3,745 = $15,195/pupil * 3,925 = $59.6M Call it $60M (assuming none of these students needs SpecEd services)

The math on these is misleading. That $12,000 or $15,000 figure includes large amounts of expenditures that do not necessarily increase or decrease in a linear fashion when you add or lose a new student. A school does not add 1/25 of a new teacher and 1/500 of additional school staff when an additional illegal alien student shows up. They don't add 1/40 of a new bus, driver and bus maintenance staff. The cost of heating and cooling the building remains about the same. Maybe Gatehouse and the non-school based admin increases by 1/185,0000, but I doubt it. Illegal alien kids require special resources such as ESOL educational services. LEGAL immigrant kids and in some instances even native born US kids require those same resources. All of these costs are rolled into that $12,000 to $15,000 figure.

What we want to consider is how much costs are increased by having those students here. In places like Bailey's Crossroads where there are large numbers of illegal alien students, we are probably adding teachers, staff and facilities in order to provide education to these students, so the cost there might be higher than that $12,000 to $15,000 figure. In other schools the presence of a few illegal aliens can be absorbed without adding personnel and facilities, so the additional cost is well under $12,000 to $15,000.

Any debate about what illegal alien kids are costing us is hamstrung by the fact we don't have accurate numbers for what these kids being here is actually costing the schools. Getting this kind of information starts with identifying who we want to lump into the pool of kids. Is it just illegal alien kids, or do we also look at the broader pool of non-native kids living in the County with someone other than their parents. Maybe we run two surveys, one for each category. We then would have to plot where each student lives, identify which additional services those kids receive from the school, and what basic school costs have been increased by having those students present.

I have no idea what the actual number is for this. I doubt the school system knows it either. Since we don't have a good number, then for policy debate purposes we can use the $12,000 or $15,000 per student figure. Just don't expect for budgetary purposes that getting rid of those students will result in a $58,000,000 savings to the County and its taxpayers.

well, since approximately 90% of FCPS' costs are for personnel - largely teachers - who are hired on the basis of formulas that tie to the number of students - there is a direct link to adding a kid and hiring more teachers. So, the $58M is a pretty good estimate of the real cost of having these kids come into the school system. It's also a pretty good estimate of what might be saved if they leave the school system. Just saying....
