Does FCPS let 18 yo's register as freshman?
Posted by: FCPS PARENT ()
Date: March 20, 2017 04:42PM

Last week's horrific and violent rape in a MOCO HS got me wondering about FCPS's policies with regards to illegal Adults who register for public education services. Do they go to An alternative HS or are they mainstreamed with regular students? All the recent MS 13 gang activity makes me wonder who is mingling with our kids. Anyone from FCPS who can share insight into the policies? And in which High Schools are these unaccompanied minors and 18 yo's being placed?

An 18 year old can not register, but a 17 year old can. So a kid can register a few weeks before their 18th birthday and be a freshman. A brand new ESOL student won't be mainstreamed until their 3rd year though. It is very common in FCPS to have 20-21 year old males in a class like World History 1 or Biology with 14 year old freshman girls.

Did you mean to say "NOT very common..."?

If you wrote what you meant, I'm very concerned as a parent. I'd like to know more.

I am a retired FCPS math teacher. I have had 21 year-old students in Prealgebra and Algebra 1 with 13 and 14 year-olds. 21 year-olds are not so common in those math classes, but 17 and 18 year-olds are. I have been retired for three years now, but I presume placement is the same.

Nice shot. What the Fuck is an adult mingled in with young kids? Adult education classes always started after Real American Kids went home to study, play sports, or fill out the ranks of minimum wage job reserved for Our kids.

This is BS. It is NOT common to have 21 year olds in freshman Biology. The schools do everything in their power to recommend alternative programs such as GED, APEX, or the TSRC to get older students the requirements to graduate. Most students at this age are usually working to support their families and want to spend as little time at school as possible so they can go out and work. OP is full of crap - it is very much the exception.

It is very common. Look at Lee High School where I know people who work there. All the level 3 ESOL kids who have been in the country for 3 years are in team taught ESOL, Algebra and Biology. Half the students are general Ed and the rest are ESOL and EVERY class has a few 20_21 year old males. So if your freshman 13/14 year old daughter is not in honors classes she WILL be in a class possiblly sitting next to a 21 year old Central American man.

This happens at every high school in Fairfax. It is much more common now that everyone passes, they got rid of 0 grades etc. The county started a new 4 year path for ESOL students and this is part of it.

What school do you teach at? Because in some schools, it is somewhat common to have 20yo in freshman classes. What is even more common and scary is not the high schools but the middle schools. 16 yo still in middle schools.

You are very mistaken my friend. Yes schools will promote programs for these older kids but they can't force them out. If the kid wants to stay they get to stay. If a student is under 18 they can register at their local high school and they have until they are 22 to graduate. You need to go by Jeb Stuart, Annadale or Lee High School some time.

Yes there are females as well but it is less common. I have a friend who team teaches a World History 1 class and they have one kid who is a total gangbanger. Wears Chicago Bulls clothes and Marylyn Monroe gear all the time. He gets to essentially recruit vulnerable 14 year olds into MS-13. The kid does his work and passes and wants to stay. Nothing you can do about it and this guy is also in a room with 14 year old girls. Most the kids are great and hard working and this is rarely an issue but should 21 year old men be in a class with 14 year old girls?

FYI: Per Feds (Plyler v. Doe, 1982), no school system may ask the citizenship status of a student being registered or self-registering for school; only county residency requirements can be confirmed. Students with certain needs - such as English Language Learners - must be educated through their 23rd birthday in Virginia.
Fairfax County is the 6th largest recipient county in the nation of Unaccompanied Minors through the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Refugee Resettlement. #TheMoreYouKnow

SO IF YOU CAN GET IN THE US YOU HAVE FREE EDUCATION THROUGH 23! THIS HAS GOT TO BE CHANGED.

I am pretty sure they match you by age group until 8th grade but I am not 100% sure as I teach high school. For instance if a 8 year old moves here they are placed in 2nd or 3rd grade. It's just at the high school level where you get older kids because the kids need 4 years of high school to graduate. Essentially a kid can be 16 and show up in the US and never gone to school in his life and the expectation is he will start off as a freshman and graduate in 4 years. Easier said than done but schools get docked if the kid doesn't graduate in 4 years.

Many of the undocumented kids, or kids from undocumented parents, do not have birth certificates so they will lie about their age just to get registered. Some who claim to be 17 or 18 are in actuality in their early to middle 20s. But you can't question them because you are racial profiling and all that politically correct BS. Of course in secondary schools like Robinson and Lake Braddock 13 and 14 year old students have always been mixed in with the upper grade students. And of course many seniors in school are 18 years old, making them legally adults, so having adults in with younger students is not anything new.

Are you asking about FCPS verifying the age of illegal immigrants,
who are in the country with either no documentation at all,
or using falsified documents?

The ones who by law cannot be asked if they are legal citizens?

The ones who are incentivized to come here and told by Obama
(and still by Trump) under Executive Oder (sic),
that if they are under the age of 18, they can stay here and "dream"?

Those students??

So the meals tax was floated to pay for free lunch, free supplies, waived fees, free extra instruction for these people? It was to be paid by people who go to work everyday and pay taxes? Every school board member who supported the tax should be voted out of office!

FCPS has plenty of trailers where these "people" can be educated without putting the general school population at risk. They can be taught English, remedial education and as a side benefit they will be located in a central location for ICE roundups!

I wonder if FCPS could be sued for aiding and abetting gangs in their recruiting practices recruit our children and then rape and kill them as examples if they don’t comply with their crimes and recruitment.

How does one hand work to eliminate gang activities (police) while the other hand stocks the schools with criminally minded adults, to say the least?

Yes - the older students can technically be in classes with 14 year olds. They can stay until they are 21 and many do not graduate as they cannot pass the SOL exams. They have lots of credits, but do not have the VA requirements. Thus FCPS has revamped the ESOL curriculum so that they take such classes as government at grade 9 as it is not an SOL class. Those who are determined will graduate. Those who were never literate in their own language have a very hard time as there is no accommodation. Many of the ELL students are serious and will succeed, however as witnessed in Montgomery County, those who are gang members can use the HS's to prey on victims. It is a serious problem.

Yup. It's nothing new. When I was a 13 year old freshmen, one of my classmates was 20. He was a guy from Africa. He wasn't that bad actually. He really wanted to get an education. Most of the ESL kids were alright, but there were a few that shouldn't have been there.

I'll never understand why liberals don't want any vetting.

Most of the kids from El Salvador and Honduras are just attending school to hit on underage girls and get free breakfast, lunch, and afterschool snacks every day.

There are a few who want to learn, but the majority -- literally at least 6 or 7 out of 10 -- do not care about getting an education, let alone respecting the teachers. They are incredibly rude. They talk and shout to one another across the classroom, play on their cellphones, and call the teachers "puta" (whore) to their faces.

If you don't believe me, ask to observe or assist at Lee High School or Key Middle School and see for yourself. By the way, those schools are the alma mater of several of the suspects in the recent killing of the 15-year-old girl.

(The African, Iraqi, and Pakistani kids are comparatively well-behaved.)

Students with special needs - SpEd or ESOL can stay in school till they are 22...if they started the school year at 21 and turn 22. It is a crazy law and takes money away from legitimate programs that really do help students.

Also some of the kids in SPED get IEP's because of discipline. When a kid gets in trouble and should be sent to an alternative school the school does an immediate IEP so the is an "excuse" to keep the child in the same school. As soon as the kid gets in trouble the parent starts yelling so and so has an IEP. Which means leave him along no matter what he does you can't send him to an alternative school. Basically get out of jail free card.

It's beyond time we (parents) do something about the troubled school environments paid for by our tax dollars. There are a lot of great teachers; but let's be honest, for most being a teacher is just a job.

As parents, we have to send our kids to school prepared to learn but we also have to support each other in numbers when trying to hold teachers who participate in bad behavior accountable. From the rapist to the grade tampers.

If you are a parent (or any supporter) who wants change and/or your child has experienced bullying or harassment by students and/or teachers please contact Parents4change2017@gmail.com.

The case of the murdered 15 year old girl from Gaithersburg. The murderers (3 out of ten) went to FCPS Elementary, Middle and High School. Lynbrook, Crestwood, Forestdale, Springfield Estates, and Garfield have undocumented students.

A very small percentage of Parents lie about the students age.
At Lynbrook, we have students that are related to MS-thirteen. We have security cameras that surround our playyard because the gang activity that was happening between 3 AM and 5AM

Beatings, drug deals, jumping in.

Playgrounds and parks are not safe at night.

And to parents....if we teachers aren't aware of which kids are undocumented, your child won't be aware.

ED...emotionally disturbed.

Getting an IEP is not easy. IEP, Individualized Education Plan, has so many hoops to get through to qualify.

You might be thinking of OHI...Other Health Imparements.

Every child in Special Education has an IEP in place. Go to WRIGHTSlaw.org and read how difficult it is to qualify for an IEP.

Also some of the kids in SPED get IEP's because of discipline. I went to Madison in the early 80's. There were seniors who turned 18 (myself included), but I don't remember ANYONE there that was 20-22.

Maybe there was a burnout or two that was 19, but that was the exception.

Honestly, why do we let 18 year old illegal aliens register for high school classes? With all the money I pay in taxes isn't there some sort of County program for this type of thing? Of course I would prefer to not provide any services to illegals, but we all know that isn't going to happen. Who thinks it's a good idea to have these illegal men in classes with 13-14 year old kids?

Build the wall.

Require citizenship or legal residency to receive Federal or State benefits.

Arrest and jail employers who hire anyone here illegally.

Hunt down, arrest, hold until trial and conviction, then deport with a lifetime ban (never allowed to even visit the US if they have been found to be here illegally), everyone who overstays a visa or is otherwise in this country illegally.

If they don't want to be separated from family, their family can go with them.

Problem solved.

100%.

Makes perfect sense...but it's never going to happen.

You DO pay for these 18-23 yr olds to attend your schools. At one time I think they were taught Adult Ed at NOVA but were pushed back into the public school system around 2008/2009.
Ms-13 activity in early 2000s was high enough at Fairfax HS where the police were awarded federal grant to staff additional SRO to the school. I think funds dried up around 2013/2014.

Since MCPS and FCPS will not give any details on how they screen and admit illegal or undocumented immigrants - this is would be a great sting operation for Project Veritas to unmask exactly how the schools operate.

Bring a "fake" undocumented immigrant - say about 27 - that looks like a teenager and see if they can get him/her enrolled in a MCPS or FCPS school. How easy is it? Can anyone just roll in the door from Guatemala and enroll?

An 18 yo. CAN enroll in FCPS if they have 6 h.s. credits. And if you lie and claim to be under 18 you're in. And yes, they sit next yo 14 yo. kids.

High school teacher here and half of my elective classes are ESL students, many are 20 plus and the 16-18 year olds quietly think it's weird even though they belong to the same ethnic group. You get what you vote for people. From the School board on up. Interesting to watch how many are shocked about the influx of unaccompanied and undocumented minors to our area.

People need to talk to the registrars of the schools. They know everyone that comes into the school. Unless they were told not to talk to people. They know the kids they are registering.

Yea man I finally graduated 5 years ago. I smoked a lot of KW, so I got left back a couple dozen times. My parents did not live long enough to see me graduate - They would have been so proud to see their 48 year old baby boy walk across the stage to get his diploma.

Heres thebrehulation: FCPS shall be free to each Fairfax County resident whose fifth birthday falls on or
before September 30 of the school year and who has not reached 20 years of age
(22 years for certain students with limited English proficiency) on or before August
1 of the school year. FCPS shall be free to each Fairfax County resident receiving
special education services who has not graduated and who has not reached 22
years of age on or before September 30 of the school year.

Soon, even in Fairfax County, everyone with the money will send their children to private school. The public schools will be abandoned to the poor and MS-13.

They also need to lay it on the School Board.

And yet, my english-speaking kid who could read and do lots of math at age 4 and has a 140+ IQ was not permitted to enroll in FCPS for kindergarten because he missed the birthday cut-off by a couple months. Had I gone to register him and pretended to not speak English, I'm sure that big bureaucratic pain in the ass could have been avoided.

I went to school in MOCO MD. I once met a guy from a MOCO HS (other than mine) who finally graduated HS at age 25.

Yes, true story.

So he goes the next year, when he's supposed to. What is the big tragedy there? My college freshman room mate was still 17 for most of our freshman year and it was kinda weird.

Should have done what illegals do -- (age) papers are fraudulent documents. Did I say he was "4" -- I meant "5" -- present altered doc. But you would go to jail... And, no, I have nothing against legal immigration. It's illegal immigration and having college-age adults (legal or illegal, citizen or noncitizen) in high school with people 18 and under.
