Here in lovely Fairfax, what is the collective sentiment regarding those folks who get pissed if you "top off" their trash can, or recycling box?

For example, if your trash day is Friday morning, and people start putting their trash cans/recycling boxes out Thursday evening around 5 pm, and either later that night or the next morning, you go out and find ones with space and drop your trash in them, is that OK?

Or, is it OK for people to tell you not to put your trash in their trash cans?

Does it make a difference if the trash is neatly wrapped, ie, not messy?

yeah man, it's the same way i view outdoor patio furniture. if you're not sitting on it, what's the big deal if i want to take a load off and sit on your chair for a little while? you're not using it, who cares? it's not like my ass is depriving you from your empty chair's benefit. i was tired, been workin all day, and needed to take a rest. it's a good chair that wasn't being used!

Reminds me once when we were like 10 years old, and me and my brother went away to summer camp.

He didn't want me to have his moon pie.

He threw it away, so I went and got it out of the trash can.

He went crying to the counselors, because I was taking "his" moon pie.

Out of the trash can.

LOL.

We've since grown up.

If there is space in the trash can, no reason somebody shouldn't use it, as long as their trash is "clean".

I had a bitch neighbor who tried to pull this shit I took the stuff out and put it on her porch.

If you think you have the right to do this, there is something SERIOUSLY wrong with you.

Take care of YOUR OWN trash, and fuck you.

Why does it matter so much?

There's a little extra room in your trash can, you don't even know about it.

Unless, of course, you sit in your kitchen looking out your window all day.

Or, you go digging through your trash can to see if any one else put there trash in your can.

Why would you do that?

What's the matter with you?

When I was having some remodeling done,
the contractor dropped 2 long rolloff dumpsters
in my driveway.

One night, as I was pulling in to rhe driveway,
my headlights illuminated two legs, dangling
over the side of one of the dumpsters.

As I got out of my car, an older woman (whose legs I'd seen)
presented herself to me saying, "Oh, hi. I was looking for
some debris I could use for my cats. I have a lot of cats."

IMO, she was trespassing and had no business
rooting through the dumpsters without permission.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

ENDING 1: We parted company as I thought, "She's a whack-job with lots of cats."

ENDING 2: The police, who I'd called when I saw the legs, warned the nosy neighbor and asked me if I'd like to press trespassing charges.

ENDING 3: The woman, disheveled, embarrassed & caught, sat on the hood of my car and said, "Use me, Big Boy, like a piece of trash."

Responsible because they seem to be overly possessive of extra space in their trash can?

Responsible Adult because they claim to have a B**ch neighbor, and say F*** you to people who merely ask a question about trash removal?

What is responsible about that?

Note, the OP said nothing about themselves doing it, they asked what others thought.

What is so responsible about not be able to comprehend the question, and respond with a f*** you, and otherwise, vitriol?

What is so responsible about digging through their trash can, and dumping other people's trash on their porch?

What is so responsible about not letting others throw their trash in a can that is not full, that is waiting by the curb getting ready to be picked up?

That is "responsible" to you? Or childish?

Doesn't fewer trash cans by the curb make it easier for the trash removal guys, and looks better, both pre and post-trash removal?

If I had room in my trash can at curb side, why the F*** would I care if somebody "tops it off" with their bagged trash?

How would I know?

I wouldn't.

Dumpsters on YOUR property are a different question, and indeed, the incident you describe could involve trespassing, whether or not dumpsters, or cats, were involved.

Trash at the curbside, however, is an entirely different matter.

I've put some good stuff out at the curb, next to the trash can, and my neighbors have riffled through it. I guess if they want it they can have it.

I've had other neighbors walking their dogs and, if they happen to shit in my yard, they've used plastic bags to pick it up, but then they put it in my trash can. I didn't appreciate that AT ALL!

In short - NO!

Unless you have your neighbors permission it is not OK to use their recycling or trash cans. This is only common sense. Even if you put it in all nice and neat suppose an animal knocks the can over and roots through it and makes a mess? Suppose you put something illegal in the trash can - they don't want to potentially be responsible for that.

That being said, if you are just going throw it on the ground and litter then yeah, go ahead and put it in my trash can.

Ultimate low rent move to put your trash in anothers property. What really pisses me off is the assholes that put their dog's feces in a bag in my trash can. If its after pickup that means the bag of shit sits in my can by my home for days until the next pick up. Usually by that time it breaks and spreads feces all over my can.

If pay for trash removal through your taxes, condo fee, home owners association or whatever, I say its fine. Low class but OK. If you don't pay, it's illegal to dump your trash in other people's dumpsters (or trash cans.)

i agree there. we had some ass in our neighborhood who would just throw bags of garbage and trash into our yard and driveway. it happened to us and the neighbors ALL the time. bags of food garbage, big pieces of lumber and drywall, used soda bottles, just tossed all over the freakin place almost every week and the cops couldn't do nothing. i can remember going out to my car and there was like a 3 foot stack of newspapers just sitting there in the driveway. i would've been just glad if whoever it was just used the trash bins instead.

If you are walking down the road drinking your Starbucks coffee and finish it off, I have no problem with you putting the empty cup into the can I set out to be picked up the next morning. If you are walking along, pick up litter that someone threw out of their car window, then of course you can put it in my can sitting by the road. If you had relatives over and generated more trash than your can can hold, then if you asked I would allow you to dump your excess into my can if there was room. I don't even care if you are walking your dog and put Fido's little gifts into the can.

Anything beyond that is freeloading. It is your job to pay for pickup service, and it is your job to have enough cans for your normal use.

I tend towards the reasonable answers.

Not the "F you buddy, git yer own trash can, 'cus this here one's mine and whatnot, and I'm responsible, due to my owning my very own trash can, having gone out and buying it and whatnot". I think those people, while technically correct (about being able to "deny" extra trash in their cans...not about being responsible, that is), are the ones that might have real problems in life, in work environments, etc.

Can you imagine accidentally cutting one of them fellers off in traffic? Whhhoooo boy. Yer gonna git some buckshot up yer ass, boy!

I understand where people might THINK you are putting "Messy" trash in their can that might get them pissed off. But man, you gotta have some mighty clean trash cans for that. But I get it, you don't want dog crap in your can. That's not always the case.

However, I would have a problem with someone getting antsy if you are putting trash that is clearly bagged, in their can that has room in it.

Same with recycling-that stuff is generally dry paper, etc.

Shoot, if I have room in my can/recycling box, fill it up! Fewer cans out on the street which looks nicer, makes it easier for the trash guys, etc.

What do I care? And I certainly ain't gonna root through it looking for identifying things on it to bust a neighbor.

Or Long John Silver, kind of like those early 90's three word bands, like Stone Temple Pilots.

While we're at it...

Your trash cans should not be out at the curb ANY earlier than sundown of the night BEFORE your trash is picked up and your trash cans should be moved back to your garage or the back of the house no later than sundown of the day of trash pickup.

The ONLY exceptions to this are...

1) Bags of leaves or lawn clippings. Those can be put out at anytime. Do try and rake your leaves or mow your lawn as close to your trash day as possible in order to minimize the amount of time your bags are out at the curb.

2) You're a little old lady. Little old ladies get to do whatever the fuck they want.

3) People with physical disabilities. Gimps have enough problems in this world without needing to struggle to adhere to trash day pickup schedules.

Dear libtard,

I paid for my trash cans, they are fairly expensive and i pay for a service to have my trash removed. As an adult I handle my shit in life and don't expect others to baby sit me and handle all of the responsibilities of life for me.

You want to put your trash in my cans? Give me a good reason otherwise grow the fuck up and get your shit together like everyone else in the world. Think that is childish? Go cry about your selfish acts that got you to a point of having to use another person's trash can.

You created that trash, did you not think it through what to do afterwards? Do you want to dump your child on me too while you're at???

Yes, it's wrong to use someone else's trash can. To the people saying oh if it was neat or tied off well it's cool! Well who is double checking, oh the person that gets screwed in the end when it doesn't go well and they are just left with a wtf.

Can't trust people, but guess what we live in a society with rules, but when people just don't give a fuck and do whatever they want it causes problems.

Do you have emotional problems? Name calling, cussing, etc.

You want somebody to "Go cry about your selfish acts that got you to a point of having to use another person's trash can."?

For real?

Yep, I've really hit rock bottom.

Let me sit and think what got me to the point of putting some trash in a can that has room in it.

Of course, since you "paid for your trash cans, and they are fairly expensive", clearly, you've made it in this mean, tough world.

Let me think of the sins and other serious failings of my life that have brought me to this point of using somebody else's trash can.

LOL!

Hell yes, you've got a lot to be proud of when you own your very own trash cans. How did you pull that off? Was it a lease to own kind of deal? Or were you able to pay cash? How much did you have to put down? I can only imagine that moment of pride, when you drop...excuse me...carefully place...that first bag of trash in it.

I imagine having at least a small gathering for when I first get mine, you know, my parents, a few select neighbors (with a very clear warning about what will happen should they decide to use it), a maybe some college buddies to show them, hey, I've made it,

Well, can only dream for now.

My congrats to you, though!

My trash bins are ready for the show this Sunday at Kates trash and coffee. I just finished pressure washing them inside and out, and I also applied a nice coat of turtle wax to both of them.

Turtle wax? You're not Katie's material, maybe try the intro german/american car shows.

This is an extreme - and funny - example, but it's the same thing really.

It's called respect for other people.

If you ask a person and they give consent to use their personal property for your own gain and/or convenience, then you have respected their rights.

Because their property is on the public street does not make it your or community property to use as you see fit. They park their cars there too.

If you use their property without permission, you violate their rights.

Capice?

Most of y'all are overblowing this, comparing a trash can to a wife, a car, patio furniture etc.

People, it's a frickin trash can and while it is "personal property" remember its purpose.

I have no problem with somebody topping of my trash can while it is in the street waiting to be picked up. And then when it's all said and done I roll it into my garage and garage and forget about it.

Why the f would I care what happens to it while it is waiting in the street filled with my dirty sticky garabage?

I don't. If there's room go ahead and fill it up.

When most animals take a dump, they walk away. They move on to other more pressing matters. They don't stand around guarding their excrement. Apparently this trait does not extend to humans. We consider ourselves sentient beings, but some days I really wonder. I can make a trashcan alarm with a few off the shelf items for a small fee if anyone is interested. It would appear to have wide appeal for many in the beltway crowd.

Yeah but if you had people just throwing big bags of garbage and pieces of construction materials all over your lawn i'm sure you'd be infuriated. it's uncalled for and probably 100% illegal.

it looked like some construction crew must've gutted a house and just decided to toss the stuff into our yard, like pieces of broken up sheet rock, 2x4's, and cut up pieces of plastic. needless to say my wife was not too happy about all that shit laying around.

Of course it's okay for people to tell you not to put your trash in their cans and it's far from being a nazi to expect that you're not going to freeload off of someone else.

If you have a party or are doing some construction and have extra (and with the animals around here bags can get ripped through) why not nicely ask your neighbors if they mind if you top off their cans/boxes? What' the big deal in asking?

We are a nice townhouse community but have one wacko in the neighborhood who thinks she's entitled to do whatever she wants on other people's property and she's effectively gotten herself ostracized from all neighborhood functions which includes no one helping her when her vehicle breaks down. People avoid her like the plague.

Don't be that person. Show a little adult respect to your neighbors by asking rather than assuming and I bet they will respond in kind and tell you that it's no problem.

You give what you get.

Yeah, another example of taking it to an extreme..."entitled to do whatever she wants on other people's property..."

OP wasn't talking about that or suggesting that.

I get it-OP was talking specifically about trash cans at curbside, ready to be picked up, and might have a little (or as I've observed, a lot) of room in them.

What the F is the problem with topping those off with bagged trash?

Yes, those are your property, and yes you've paid for the service (I would assume all the neighbors had, as well).

But not the same as messing with someone's wife, cars, furniture, or "on other people's property..." as some posters want to compare it to.

If I've got room in my trash can, top it off. Why the F would I know, or care?

I wouldn't.

Don't overblow it. They are curbside trash cans, for Chr*** sake. Maximize their usage, and the streets look nicer with fewer cans out there.

Focus on that-you would really care if somebody "topped off" your curbside cans with bagged trash?

wow.

So, you wouldn't mind and I would mind. I answered and voiced my opinion. Let them all top off your trash and not mine.

That's the way it works my friend. We each get to choose. We don't get to make unilateral choices for others.

Reminds me of when I was a teeny tiny lil girl.

One of the first lessons they drilled in you was to share. Yes, it may be "yours" but don't be selfish.

They even had tricks...like, you get to cut the PBJ sandwich in half, your pal gets to pick which half they want.

Then you grow up and discover the world really isn't that way. You work hard for your stuff and status, and you don't really need to share that. Amen, and that is America.

However, the issue of extra space in your trash can at curbside...I'm not really that attached to that. My money and other stuff? You bet...hands the F off.

But does anyone who DOESN'T like the extra space in their curbside trash can to be used, can you give a logical reason why, other than these "f you, its mine so hands off, its like me trying to f your wife or sit in you car"...which it's not even close to being like...

Why do you care if people put bagged trash in your curbside trash can that has extra space in it?

I know there's gonna be the answer like "f you, I don't owe you answer, it's my f'ing trash can", and while true, doesn't really require much thought.

So help me out...other than comparing it to f'ing somebody's wife, or somebody trashing your yard, why do you care if somebody tops off your curbside garbage can?

I still haven't seen a logical, unemotional answer.

You might convince me that I shouldn't do it...although I don't think you could ever convince me that I should care if somebody does it to my trash cans.

No, officer, its right here!

OK, ma'am, can you describe the damage?

Well, um, no, but they put their trash in it, right on top of mine!

So, nothing stolen, nothing damaged?

No, but it's my trash can, I paid for it, it's mines!

Ok, ma'am, we've got to go, thanks for your time.

If they cared enough to do so, the one to be making the call would be the company that picks up the trash... for theft of service, as the cable company might.

If the trash can is out in the public right of way, the wronged party would be the disposal services company. They even own the trash can.

So it's 11:30 at night. I'm shutting down the downstairs and realize it's trash night, the can is at the curb, and the kitchen trash is full. I pull the bag, toddle out in my slippers, and the can is also full. But my neighbor's is half empty. So I put my nice Glad ForceFlex bag in his can, making sure the lid is still closed.

And you're going to have a shit-fit if one of your neighbors does this?? And say stupid things about me being "broke" or "homeless"? More like I'm not a flaming asshole whose neighbors hate him, as yours apparently do.

Try not being an asshole--you'll find it works, and life is a lot easier.

You're either so challenged you think this is a legitimate arguing point, or you're a wannabe troll.

Either way everyone's better off without you, so go throw yourself in the trash.

Idiot.

There really is no legitimate arguing point to getting pissed if people top off your curbside trash can or recycling bin with bagged trash or recyclables as the case may be.

Except "it's my can".

Which is just plain selfishness.

Like first grade level selfishness.

To whom was that aimed? Without quoting or naming, it's a bit vague...

But Moron, honey, how do you know their can (with a lid) is half empty unless you take the lid off an look? Why not just place your Glad ForceFlex bag on top of your own can?

Try not being a neighborhood creeper--you'll find it works, and life is a lot easier.

Maybe they lifted up the lid to check? What a creeper, looking into your neighbors trash can while holding a trash bag.

Well, I was going to go ahead and drop my hot spunk load in my wife but, she's all the way upstairs and I'm on the front lawn. Wait...there's my neighbor's wife, she's right at the curb...I'll just drop my load in her. She won't mind and neither will her husband.
