Colony House Furniture store
Posted by: Where'd it go? ()

Does anybody know what happened to this place? I know its gone from Arlington, but did they just go out of bizz or merge or move somewhere else?

I have a desk that my parents bought there probably in the late 70s early 80s and I would like to get in contact with them to get more information on this desk. Only identifying item is a Colony House Arlington Virginia sticker in one of the drawers.

Seriously? Yea, Call the Furniture store to ask about a desk they sold in the 80's and the value. They would say yes we sold it...now fuck off.

I think Colony House went out of bizz. I remember the place, on Lee Highway before Roslyn. A hotel is there now I believe.

That looks like an expensive piece of furniture. Sure didn't come from Walmart! Good luck!

"This store closed down 4 or 5 years ago and I'm trying to find out if they went out of business, moved, or merged with another dealer."

Sounds to me like OP just confirmed it's no longer at the original location. Doesn't mean they went out of business.

This poor guy is finding out the collective IQ of this freak show is a negative number.

Family owned Colony House closed for good in Arlington in late 2011. That establishment had been around for 75 years+ and sold higher end furniture... no junk. I have family members that previously ordered lots of nice furniture from them over the years.

The piece in your photos is correctly called a SECRETARY DESK WITH HUTCH. Try inspecting all interior drawers and compartments again to possibly identify the true manufacturer which typically would hide their stamp or label within.

It's appears to be a well made piece of furniture that probably isn't worth a whole lot of cash but will last a good while with continued care and can be passed down to your family's next generation.

If you keep looking inside the unit you may find the true maker's tag and not that of the store (that is indeed now out of business). It way me meatal, a sticker, or heat-burnt into the wood. Probably Thomasville, or one of the other North Carolina furniture makers of that era. Colony House always sold decent goods, at an in-town price.

My grandmother bought almost all her furniture at the Colony House in Arlington. High end shit only. It brought a kings ransom at her estate sale after she passed away. Colony House only carried the finest furniture in this area.

I would suspect that desk is worth a lot more than the nitwits on here could imagine. FU people buy their furniture at Walmart and The Room Store.

Get a hair dryer and heat up the Colony House sticker and see if the manufacturer info is under the sticker if you cannot locate it any where else on the item.

My parents bought a number of pieces from Colony House.

I think the location killed the place once I66 was built.

I recall the guys that owned the place seemed a bit mafiaosa.

Sorry, But these days no one is going to pay a "kings ransom" for that style furniture from the 80's at an estate sale. If it's Mid century Modern maybe. A nice expensive piece new, but no market.

^^ Well-said! Every estate sale and estate liquidator
proprietor in the DMV has to deal with client's tell
of their parent's expensive furniture.

Truth-be-told... most of the estate sale furniture is
sold for pennies on the dollar. The rest of it ends
up being donated to a charity or hauled away by
1-800-GOT-Junk? That's the reality unless you have
a Chippendale find of the century. Good luck.

It is a Henkle-Harris Secretary in Cherry. The company was Virginia based and made excellent furniture. Now closed. Solid wood - no veneer. It would sell for about $1800 perhaps more.

Slant top desks and secretaries were made in much the same style for two centuries. Sometimes it is difficult to pin down when it was made

I have one, no bookcase on top, solid mahogany with a carved serpentine front, each drawer and top have individual locks with a skeleton key, has claw feet. Probably 1920s, but could be 1940s. I'd love to have an Art Deco one from the the 1900.

On yours from the 70s-80s are the two "columns" next to the center drawer actually pull-out secret compartments? I'm sure Grandma kept her weed in there....

It is a little known fact that the site of Colony House Furniture was actually the location of a civil war skirmish. A detachment from Lighthorse Lee's calvalry came across scouts of General Meade's forward elements and they fought a minor battle there.

More recently, after colony house folded, Arthur Treacher's corporation decided to turn the site into a fish and chips shop.

Patrons will be able to enjoy fish, chips, hush puppies, slaw and ice cold Fanta beverages while overlooking rt. 66 traffic stopped dead in its tracks.

Wow, these drawers are really nice ! They are pretty old, but they are still looking stylish, and I like it very much. I have exactly the same drawer at my grandfather's house, and it's very old. That's why it got a little bit broken. It had a problem with it's linear slider. However, I have replaced it with a moderne linearführungen für schubladenschiene, and everything is fine now. I am sure that this drawer is going to be fine many years, because the linear slider that I've been using is very qualitative.

I think this store has been closed for a long time. but your desk looks so vintage , I love old furniture, I would put it in the bedroom. Despite the fact that I prefer more vintage furniture, I always choose a modern bed so that it is comfortable to sleep in and not only look at it. I recently bought an adjustable bed with a good mattress. in General, I spent a lot of time searching for a bed and mattress, until I found a cool blog https://bedroom.solutions/ that helped me decide. it describes in detail the best mattresses and adjustable beds of 2019-2020 so I didn't have to search for more information on the Internet

Do you still have this furniture? I want to buy it. It will combine perfectly with my house's interior design. I don't know why you don't like it but after a good restoration, it will look better. I don't understand why people don't like vintage, old furniture or classic design. I love it, the house is richer with this design and I don't need to change it every 5 years to keep up with fashion. If you have a poltrona-mole, like on https://www.osvaldoantiguidades.com.br/loja/moveis-vintages/poltrona-mole/, I will buy it.

If you are looking for living room furniture, you should use a combination of a love chair, a chair, and a large sofa with cuts that you would like to replace. Other types of furniture from ancient Egypt include tables that depicted art or non-existent or well-preserved objects when they were laid in graves and beds and storage boxes. At Watson, you can buy interior furniture from contemporary living room sofas to bedroom furniture and kitchen tables. At paydaydeals.com.au, I found the best furniture models and prices.

This type of desk would fit the old-fashioned design. if you like old school it would be alright. I had a lot of furniture that looked similar, but our new design looked more hi-tech so we had to get rid of the furniture. We also replaced the radiators with new slimline radiators that look much better and fit the interior design well.

I think that contemporary rugs will look great with rare furniture because it is the fusion of two styles that I think is the best thing that can be done. By the way, by clicking on the link you can find yourself a great cover that will suit you in size. The carpets there are not very expensive and of high quality, I took a couple of Carpets there myself and was very pleased with them.
