Black waitress Kelly Carter received thousands of dollars in donations after she claimed that a white couple wrote “great service don’t tip black people” on their check. But a lawyer for the customer say Carter made it all up.

“Our client did not nor would he ever write anything about refusing to tip African Americans because of their race,” Daniel Hebda a lawyer working on behalf of the patron said, according to WTOP.

Carter claims a white couple came into Anita’s New Mexico Cafe in Ashburn, Virginia, ate dinner, paid their $30.52 bill and wrote “Great service, don’t tip black people” at the bottom of the receipt.

“I looked at the receipt three times is what I did. Because I was shocked. Because I’ve never, never being a server seen that,” Carter told WRCTV at the time.

Anita’s New Mexico Cafe owner Tom Tellez said “I was appalled, though it’s kind of in line with the political landscape.”

The incident became a national story, the Loudon County NAACP defended Carter, and a Virginia man launched an online fundraising campaign that produced more than $3,600 on Carter’s behalf.

But the lawyer for the patron denies that they his client made any racist remakes.

“Our client has no ill feelings towards African Americans. Our client did not leave a $0.00 tip. Our client tipped $0.01 out of his own conviction against tipping well for poor service.”

Though the Loudon County NAACP is supporting Carter.

“It’s sad any way it goes,” Philip Thompson, the president of the Loudoun County NAACP, told WTOP.

It's definitely not cowardly to express your disdain with a server by not tipping and/or tipping a penny. Leaving a cent is nation-wide sign for fuck you to a server. Just because it's non-confrontational doesn't make it a real passive aggressive move. Also, you have no idea what kinds of words may have been exchanged leading up to the penny tip.

In either scenario it doesn't sound like the guy wrote the racist message. That's the real issue here. If this message was made up .. the server is a horrible person, there's fraud going on, and a bunch of people have egg on their face. Everyone is so quick to believe a ridiculous story like this and not put any critical thinking in place. People want racists so bad for some reason. Can't figure out why..

Here's the issue with that. If you criticize a nigger to mgmt, it will be ignored or they will just - quietly or overtly - call you a racist. And then she may chimp out or do something to your food, steal your cc info or worse.

Clearly the manager hired the nigger and she works there. You can believe he knows how bad she really is. Even after the fake shit got exposed, SHE STILL WORKS THERE TODAY. What does that tell you about the value/opinion of mgmt?

We don't actively confront nigger issues any more. The media has ensured that the risk is simply too great. It's done passively, because we are not really giving anyone some great enlightenment when we mention one of their niggers has fucked us over.

I love the way scared people like you make the victim the bad guy. The black lady pulled a divisive racial hoax and that is the huge problem. People tip pennies every day because of shitty service. It's universally known and accepted as a practice.

I will never eat at Anita's again until they fire this woman and apologize to the community as a whole. Their food is OK, it is comparable to many other Mexican chains, but I will eat there instead of patronizing a place that supports fraud.

A tip is a gratuity, not a requirement! I know most servers depend on them to survive but they are still not required. If this lady decided to forge this note she should be exposed, embarrassed and FIRED!

^^^^^This is correct...It's not the customers fault! As I said before, having been in the biz as an owner and manager, I guarantee the server has done something else w/ CC tips and receipts before. She also learned that shit from somebody...check you ANITA'S CC charges carefully folks.

this is not a blog but an actual event. i was at a store and went to "self checkout". just as i was pulling items from cart the black female attendant interrupted me and asked if i needed help. i said no, i'm going to use self checkout. 30 sec later there was a software glitch with the self checkout - and it's asking me to get an attendant. i look to the attendant and she's chatting with another store employee. i wait about 10 sec but she continues chatting and i ask for help.

she then angrily asserts "she already axed me if i wonted help and i did take it because she was black

i left for a "normal register", of course

Aren't the ones who jumped to the stereotypical conclusion about whites guilty of racism?

Read some of the comments on the news pages after this incident. Trump was blamed, the state of Virginia was blamed, whites as a group were blamed.

I know there are some ignorant people here who like throwing the N-word and stereotypes around, but this poor guy had his name tarnished and this fraud was used as a societal milestone to lecture and belittle whites. It is getting common.
