A guess: because going to a game meant (for most of the DC area) a long trek to the wilds of PG County, the average attendee was more hard-core.
Having grown up watching Jr A hockey in Ontario, I find the Verizon Center experience to be way too slickly packaged. Give me the old Maple Leaf Gardens any day--now there were some scruffy looking fans.
