Why were Washington Capitals fans so much more rough and rugged looking back in the Capital Centre days?

Was it because of the venue?
Was it because it was PG county?
Was it because of the lower ticket prices?

A guess: because going to a game meant (for most of the DC area) a long trek to the wilds of PG County, the average attendee was more hard-core.

Having grown up watching Jr A hockey in Ontario, I find the Verizon Center experience to be way too slickly packaged. Give me the old Maple Leaf Gardens any day--now there were some scruffy looking fans.

There are advertisements on the glass blocking some people's view of the match.

Because there was an Arthur Treacher's in the Caps Centre. Moar Fish and Chips... Moar fighting in the stands!
