A Fairfax County police officer was placed on restricted duty Wednesday after an investigation found the officer was speeding and driving without lights and sirens when he crashed into a van in Falls Church over the weekend.

Around 10:30 a.m. Saturday, an officer driving a marked police vehicle collided with a 2000 Toyota Sienna van at the intersection of Leesburg Pike and Patrick Henry Drive. The officer, who was responding to a call for a disorderly man in the 6100 block of Arlington Boulevard, called for help on the radio and ran to help the 53-year-old driver of the van, police said.

Emergency crews transported the van’s driver to an area hospital, where he remains as of Wednesday afternoon.

Crash investigators determined the officer was driving above the posted 40 mph speed limit and without his emergency equipment activated. Detectives are working to determine to what extent the officer’s speed may have contributed to the crash.

The crash reconstruction team is still working to determine what speed the officer was going at the time of the crash, said Officer Don Gotthardt with Fairfax County police.

The officer, whose name has not yet been released, was placed on restricted, administrative duty pending the outcome of two parallel investigations: one administrative and one criminal. The officer has been with the department for two years.

The crash caused too much damage to the cruiser’s video footage for it to be retrieved, police said.

The Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney will make a decision on charges based on the outcome of the investigation.

Anyone who witnessed this crash or with information about this incident can contact police at 703-280-0543.

I saw the whole thing. The officer in the cruiser did nothing wrong. The driver of the P.O.S. 2000 Toyota Sienna was a squat, Salvadorian woman who could barely see over the goddamn steering wheel. She had 4 kids in the back (all unbuckled) and was talking on her shitty, 4 year old Android cell phone when the incident occurred. Furthermore, the fucked-up mini van had 25.2 dents all over it and the paint on the hood was worn off from acid rain and being left outside. There were approximately 31 soccer ball stickers on the back, as well.

These factors alone ensure the officer will be found not guilty on all counts and reinstated to active duty where he can being rounding up more people per President Trump's immigration policy.

Saw the video of the crash on the news. It was recorded on the dash cam of another vehicle that was stopped for the red light. That cop was hauling ass and he's real lucky that nobody died.

Nothing new to see here. I see cops driving reckless all the time. They think because they are cops, they can break the law and get away with it.

So Fairfax County police will investigate and send their report to the Commonwealth's attorney.

Don't expect an impartial investigation, any admission of culpability, or any consequences for the officer from Fairfax. Getting even the name of the officer involved will be like pulling teeth.

In the case of Ashley McIntosh they had the audacity to say that she was at fault despite the officer speeding driving recklessly, running the red light, and not having his siren on.

It was an officer and not a supervisor, expect the officer to be fired after a nine month long investigation.

IS it true that in Virginia anyone who speeds gives up their right of way? If so, the officer could be in trouble.

Exactly. It is hard to gauge the speed of an oncoming vehicle. If, say a car initiates a turn and a motorcycle comes flying on the straightaway at twice the speed limit, the driver of the turning car cannot reasonably be culpable for the accident, because the bike came out of nowhere at warp speed. That's why you have a siren and flashing lights on police cars. Even them, police must take reasonable care at intersections and when there is traffic ahead.

This was justified.

Officer was speeding to Arthur Treacher's. Totally within the law.

Yall dont realize but majority of the time you see a cop driving, he is almost always responding to a call, just not with lights and sirens. Apparently its a policy issue where a call that is serious but not as serious does not allow officers to respond with lights and sirens. Its pretty stupid, hence why you rarely see officers with lights and sirens. When you usually see one with lights and sirens, it must be pretty damn serious and moving out of the way is heavily encouraged. Even if you see a cruiser accelerating pretty fast without lights and sirens, changing lanes and letting them past does wonders.

i don't believe reports on the lark when i know it involved lawsuits against the TAX DOLLAR

I agree that occasionally they might be on a call , but most of the time that I see a cop driving crazy, a few minutes later I them at 7-11, or McDonalds drive- thru.

Supervisors usually get to drive the Suburbans and Explorers.
