college advice??
Posted by: HighSchoolSenior ()
Date: February 22, 2017 07:18PM

I'm a high school senior girl.
I don't know what I'm gonna major in or where I'm gonna go to college so I suppose I'm asking for advice.
I got into Mary Washington, Radford, and GMU. Still waiting to hear back from tech.
Idk what I want to major in

I dont really want to go to GMU because it's so close to home and if I go there I gotta stay at home and commute and that sounds like shit. I also think it would be more expensive even with staying at home.
Radford has a bad rep. Not sure how true that is?
Mary Washington is small as fuck and you're required to take a language there all 4 years no matter what your major is.
I doubt I'll get into Tech and Tech is HUGE.
I'm a kinda nerdy introverted type of kid. I enjoy playing video games and teaching myself new things. I'm currently teaching myself how to play guitar. I also enjoy reading and drawing. I know for sure that I will not be partaking in drunken partying and I think studying sounds WAY more fun anyway. My high school grades arent the best. I'm a B average student with most good grades being in electives. I kinda wanna join a DnD club in college and learn how to play that. :D

OMFG! I am also a highschool senior girl! I got into Virginia Tech, UVA, GMU, Radford and a few out of state schools. I don't want to stay that close to home, either! (You know, boys and all!)

But I want to go somewhere where I can get a good education, but somewhere that has a good social atmosphere. I am also a dancer and into gymnastics so I want to stay involved in clubs like that, but not at the varsity/school level. Any info on sororities that are good at these schools would be good, too. If it matters, I am 5'7" and 110 lbs very fit.

Thanks!

career counselors in fcps get payed 100k on average and they haven't helped you at all ? every one of those overpayed useless mouth breathers should be fired...

no mention of money concerns which is strange.

if you want to party with nerds, just work at a local comic book shop and go to nova and sign up for UVA guaranteed admission and get good grades....after 2 years if you figure out what you want, go to UVA...get a bitching connected degree and become the queen of cosplay

If you're introverted don't go to a large school. You will fall through the cracks. Most of your 100 to 200 level classes will have anywhere from 300 to 500 people. I've heard some schools have even more. I know a girl who went to LSU and she said some of her intro classes had a 1000 people in them. They signed in on a computer for attendance. The professors at these large schools don't give a damn about anything but their research. Go to a smaller school. Trust me.

I went to GMU. I wouldn't go there now. The campus is too big now. They cut down a lot of the trees and didn't plant any new ones. I would go to school in Europe, preferably Sweden.

Consider Liberty University? I was gonna go there but I chose Harvard instead!

Get convicted of a felony, and use the prison system to get a free degree(s).

Get a STEM degree...too many liberal arts degrees working at starbucks. VCU, JMU, and ODU are options as well. GMU blows now, too much construction as you mentioned.

Forgot about Mary Mount, get a place in Arlington...but be close enough to home to do your landry and eat your parents' food.

I went to gmu in the 90s, glad I did as well. While I don't like the place now, I liked working while going to school. Plus having the DC clubs close was nice as well, namely the 9:30 club. Even though it sucks now, gmu was a more economical option as well. I went to vatech enough to know that I'd go insane there...though I like the football there.

How does JMU compare to the other schools in state? And why would you have gone insane at vatech?

GMU sounds like a good option if you plan to stay local to intern or get a job in your career field before you graduate.

GF went to VT, I went there almost every weekend. JMU is fine, kind of party school-ish.

OP still has questions that are not answered!

Mainly: Which campus is closest to Arthur Treacher's? Is there one on campus? This should be the deciding factor, here.

I can't believe how many trolls post when somebody asks a serious question, even on this site. But anyway you say:

"I'm a kinda nerdy introverted type of kid. I enjoy playing video games and teaching myself new things. I'm currently teaching myself how to play guitar. I also enjoy reading and drawing. I know for sure that I will not be partaking in drunken partying and I think studying sounds WAY more fun anyway. My high school grades arent the best. Maybe you can cast a wider net, so to speak. Maybe take a year off, and look farther into what is available outside of Fairfax County and the immediately surrounding areas. You sound like an intelligent and thoughtful young woman who would perhaps thrive in a smaller college environment, be that in VA, MD, PA or (yikes) CA. You are at a time in your life when you can go anywhere and do any thing, and you should go and do as you please. Whatever you do, please go to a college/university that respects the fact that you are uncertain what you want to do with your life or what you want your career to be. High School guidance counsellars who try to syphon you off into a profession/major aren't worth anything, are they?

I took a year off and worked at my local Arthur Treacher's right after high school. It prepared me for my college life and gave me skills I still use to this day. Like how to fry up some fucking awesome fish. And how to work a deep fryer. And how to perfectly roll balls of cornmeal into hush puppies.

I wouldn't be the person I am today without Arthur Treacher's.

LOL btw you should totally go to Radford. They need to keep up their quota of sluts who will give it all up after two beers.

My recommendation is to seek out employment at a fast-food establishment specializing in fresh, fried fish and potato products. Something along the lines of Arthur Treacher's.

I'm a serious poster not bait and none of you answered my specific questions. I know I want to stay in state because of money. I'm fairly sure I want to go to one of the 4 schools I mentioned. All you all talking about Mason and not even mentioning the other schools on my list. And I visited VCU and that place was way too much fucking city for my liking.

Of the three colleges, GMU and Mary Wash are essentially equivalent, Radford is a step down.

Radford is in the middle of nowhere and so everyone doesn't do anything except drink. Plus the town is known for making money off the college kids and so they are always looking to bust up a part and hand out any kind of tickets.

While GMU is legit, I fill you pain about being too close to home.

Mary Wash is the best choice. It's a very good school in a nice small town. Plus you still are close enough to home, the beach, concerts in Richmond. Go for it.
