The fire that killed a 5-year-old boy in Lorton, Virginia, on Tuesday evening was caused by “inappropriate use of a lighter” by the child, the fire department said Wednesday.

The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department said that the fire started accidentally in the garage of a house in the 8100 block of Arcade Street a little after 5 p.m.

While firefighters were heading to the house, the boy’s mother and three neighbors — two off-duty firefighters and a retired fire battalion chief — tried to reach the attached garage through the door to the house put the fire out and rescue the boy. They were knocked back by the extreme heat and were taken to nearby hospitals for smoke inhalation. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

Firefighters first thought the blaze was a brush fire, but on the way to the house, they were told it was a house fire.

The boy’s older sister wasn’t home at the time. Two dogs and three birds died in the fire; two other dogs were rescued.

The fire department is continuing to investigate. They haven’t released any names in connection with the fire.

A lighter didn't cause that fire, a little boy started that fire with a lighter.

I agree, this kid's motivation was stoked up by his oppressors. The neighbors had a hand in this.

These jokes really inflame me. They are incendiary, at best. After reading all of these incendiary comments, I get really hot under the collar.

I pray every day I don't die in a public way such that it's on the 6 o'clock news or the internet and certainly not here on FU.com.

In hindsight, giving the kid a lighter and jug of gasoline for Christmas was not the best idea. But who could've foreseen this tragic outcome?

Smokers are the laziest, most worthless douchebags around. They are selfish litter bugs who couldn't care less about the effects of their filthy habit on others. In this case, their stupidity of leaving lighters laying around children has directly led to a death. The parents should be executed.

All smokers should be executed, nothing but low lifes who cost the tax payers a ton of money, most make $20k a year on the high end. It's too bad we have to foot the bill when you get cancer.

The roof! The roof! The roof is on fire!

This fire may have been caused by a grease fire. Which would have been prevented by simply going to Arthur Treacher's for some fish instead of trying to fry it up on their own. There is a lesson here.
