Restaurant Jobs in Fairfax

Real talk- been out the restaurant industry for 5 years. I went back to school and finished it. Was hoping for an office job- but that fell through. I worked as a temp on and off through college and realized I don't want an office job anymore.

I want to make some quick cash- but of course my last job is no longer available- restaurant is closed. Can't get a reference from them as they were a mom and pop joint.

Since I have no recent industry reference, I am ok with just working whatever job they give me. I used to be a server, but am ok with hostessing, line cook (had my food handler's card and will happily get it back if it means a job) even washing dishes if I had to. I have savings to tide me over a year or two while I make my way back up. I have no debt other than my condo, no student loans or anything in my way. I am single no kids.

I hope this is not a problem, they will be asking why back into foodservice when i had an high powered office job- I dont want them to think i will quit again in a few months, I intend to hang in there!!

My Question/TL;DR:

Is it still acceptable to walk in during slow times on weekdays (say 2-4pm) and ask to speak to a manager about jobs? I would hate to apply online and not ever hear back.

THANKS!!!

Where did you work five years ago? Or, at least, what kind of restaurant did you work in? Upscale? Casual? What type of cuisine(s)/techniques are you familiar with or comfortable with if you want to be a line cook?

If you had your ideal job in the industry, what would it be? In the front or back? Chef de Cuisine, maitre d'hotel, or just a server or working a station in the back?

If you have no luck with responses on here, ask your question on these sites:

Would rather not disclose that on this board, LOL.

Casual, it was a family place.

Basic American Diner-type Fare, I was popular for how I cooked my breakfasts. (No, I didn't work at waffle house!) but I was a fast hash-slinger. I can handle lunches/dinners too but only cooked if for some reason both of our full time cooks called out the same day. I didn't get a whole lot of practice, so am happy learning a particular restaurant's style. I also can do a lot of prep work and don't mind that either (chopping veggies, getting soups together, etc).

I also worked at a walmart deli for awhile, so know how to cook large batches of hot food (my largest was a 500 piece order of chicken along with the sides, I had it ready with only 40 minutes notice- by myself!) and can whip up a mean 6 foot long sandwich slicing the meats and cheeses myself! Does that count too? ;p

To be frank, I do enjoy cooking but am OK with starting from the bottom. I am aware places like Applebees tend to microwave their food (no insult, just how it is done now in fast casual restaurants, I am aware of this).

Ideal job- not necessarily management, but would be happy to do ordering food and paper stock, etc as well as filling in for absent employees wherever I am needed (I like to stay versatile) so frankly I have no real preference.I am cool if one day I had to fill in for an absent server and the next an absent cook, but if forced to choose- back of the house.

Thanks JI, I am aware of these sites but thought I would try here.

City-data is too "frou-frou" to have people admit they currently work as a cook, everyone there makes 6 figures on a government contract.

Reddit r/nova is moreso highschoolers and IT people, not too many cooks but I will ask there too if all else fails. Same thing as city data in the nova forum- everyone is G13 classified LOL.

Really it's the whole NOVA area like this. People get off on their status/how much money they make. I feel FfxU is a more blue-collar board so am asking here.

Sorry for the multiple posts, but my original question still stands (is it ok to just walk in and ask to speak to a manager).

I feel tomorrow or thursday would be a good day to go if so, today will be busy with all the government employees going back to work and going out to lunch, etc since they were all off yesterday.

Thanks for any insight people may have, and good luck all! :)

If you can't find a job in the Fairfax County food service industry - You need to consider a career in competitive dick sucking.

Yes, Go in from 2-4 dress appropriately and ask for an application and to speak to a manager. No phone calls!..if they wondered why you gave up your high powered job...hey, they merged etc. happens all the time. And about the bullshit that casual restaurants (Chili's, Applebee's, Friday's etc) microwave all the food, bullshit. Your ass would be buried in one of those kitchens without training. They may have a Microwave for a few items, but real prep and cooking is still done.

Those places are staffed by idiots, and only need the skill to rip open a carton, and push either 1, 2, 3, or 4 on a company programmed microwave unit.

Even the veggies com pre cut in plastic bags.

Let's do the stupid whore math, shall we? You never had "a high powered office job". What you do have is a lot of made-up stories about non-existent kitchen experience.

the first office job i want is kicking out democrats who make things that break everything in the past while removing (features) - who do so by breaking dependancies and over-writing namespaces

then, carry on with the tao of programming

they of course have every intention, because they are using things like "internationalization" to plant security and dependency breaks - to insure i never get in that position (to kick their fucking asses)

George Soros is hiring people to protest Trump. He is paying $60000 a year.
