Popeyes is better but Roy Rogers chicken is the best of all.
Popeyes biscuits are better than RR or KFC biscuits so the best combo is biscuits from popeye and chicken from RR.

I may be the minority here but I prefer KFC chicken, I don't care much for the real crispy chicken that Popeye's has. KFC has better slaw as well.

I will give Popeye's the better biscuit, red beans and rice.

Haven't had Roy's in a long time so don't remember it.

Popeyes is better, but its personal preference. Do you like the skin soggy or crispy with a nice cajun kick.

Theres one in Kingstowne and another in Mt Vernon plus 2 in Manassas and a new Roy Rogers opened in Gainesville about a year ago. The chicken recipe has not changed from the Marriott recipe.

There are three Roy Rogers joints in Alexandria.

Personally, I think Popeyes is better. Always loved it there. But I know some people who like it a whole lot more than I do. How about we get a poll and ask the niggers to vote on it?

I don't know if it's me...or fast food nation but, back in the 70's KFC was king. Then in the late 80's and early 90's, something changed with their cooking process and ever since...KFC chicken is just a total oil bomb. Either they are not changing the oil as frequently, they aren't frying the chicken as hot or as long, or there has been a formula change to the oil. Supposedly, eliminating trans-fats is supposed to be the better way to go on many levels but, I don't know if there's a corollary there or not...

Today...right now...the best fried chicken in the DC area within fast food nation...is indeed Roy's. The skin is light and crispy and they appear to be using a higher grade of chicken meat than anybody else.

Of course, no fast food chicken beats what is possible in your kitchen...if you're up for the cleanup.

A Popeyes will soon be replacing the KFC at the Colonade if that answers your question.
I will be attending the grand opening and eating more chicken than any man ever seen.

In Chantilly-Fairfax, both are bad. The KFC in Chantilly is so bad, rude service, it is to be torn down, and replaced by a Chick-fil-A sometime this year. Chick-fil-a the best for chicken, great service and added note employees are reasonably competent in speaking English, great product, blessed by yearly increases of several percent in revenue, and as a side note not controlled by Wall Street 1%, so Chick-fil-a can do extra for their customers as myself has experienced many times, unlike so many other fast food chains who try to cut costs who hire the cheapest (and not so good) help they can get.

The one in chantilly is disgusting, it always smells like somebody farted in there. i don't know if it's a plumbing issue or what but man does it stink like ass in there sometimes.

This is at least the 7th thread on good local fried chicken in northern virginia.

Anyway, as my Name above says, this goes to taste, and so there is universal answer.

My list:

Popeyes
Roy Rogers (the Pappy Parker recipe)
KFC
Church's
Bojangles

As far as Giant/Safeway/TraderJoes/etc. goes, it's hit or miss.

Fried chicken from Asian joints always smells like fish/shrimp.

I'm not going to wait 40 minutes for Korean fried chicken.

Really? Article I saw made it sound like the dead Wendy's was going to be a Chick-Fil-A. But what you're suggesting seems at least as likely (two chicken places in one plaza?! Other than Fast Food Heaven over by the Expo Center, you don't usually see two similar fast food places in one location).

That's because it isn't on Fairfax Circle. It is across from the Home Depot.

ITYM "to replace the KFC"?

Seems very strange: there's one at the Expo Center a mile away, another a couple of miles up 28 by Air & Space. Seems like overkill.

Greybeard, KFC is correct (my bad, also thoughts of nearby Popeyes in Greenbriar which in my experience just as bad, one time so bad, poor drive-thru speaker mechanical quality combined with at time with worker with limited English could not understand the order, actually drove out of the drive thru-lane lane before completing the order). As far as too many Chick-fil-a's in one area, if they close one, I suspect it will be the older smaller one at the Expo Center, but I have no inside knowledge. Or OOTH, I was eating inside at the Chick-Fil-a in Fair Lakes early yesterday eve, and watching the drive thru-lane from where I was sitting, and in the 30 minutes I was there, never a break in cars in the lane, cars constantly coming through. They may end keeping all three in Chantilly, given the volume of business. Digging into the zoning application, there were conditions in it about CFA handling the volume of business in the drive-thru at the future Sully Chantilly one such as an extra in-person outside order taker with netbook/ipad at peaks times.
