Now, that’s a lot of change.

A Virginia man used 300,000 pennies to pay sales tax on two cars at the Department of Motor Vehicles.

The Bristol Herald Courier reports (http://bit.ly/2jlMLsp) that Nick Stafford delivered five wheelbarrows full of change, mostly pennies, at the DMW office in Lebanon, Virginia, on Wednesday. The coins weighed in at 1,600 pounds.

Stafford said he paid in coins to “inconvenience” the DMV.

Stafford was upset because he was unable to find out the direct number to the Lebanon DMV until filing a Freedom of Information Act request. He later sued the state because he says he was denied direct phone numbers to other DMV offices in his area.

Stafford ended up filing three lawsuits, which were dismissed Tuesday.

If I worked at that DMV I would do everything possible to screw that guy over. I would cancel all his registrations and his license. I would put all his personal info on fairfax underground and have pizza sent to his house every night.

And you should, and would be fired, possibly jailed for tampering with State records. Have fun working at the McDonald's... wait, they wouldn't hire you.

Pennies are legal tender. If the DMV has a problem with them they should draft specific terms regarding what form and denominations that payments should be made. That would prevent this kind of chicanery in the future because by policy unacceptable payments would not be applied to the person's account.

As for this stunt- yes the taxes are very high, and this brings attention to them.... but, you could always buy and drive an old beater as a form of protest, and to avoid the taxes. You might suffer a little, but it wouldn't approach the level of a hunger strike or self-immolation.

As for the DMVs not answering ther phones. This guy is right. A post office or DMV should answer their damn phones and the phone number should not be kept secret.

that was the timid approach

some blue collar workers will run a tractor through town and topple buildings, when the county governments get greedy

there's over-reach, then there's reaching for the wrong straw

Did they keep his five wheel barrows?

At the bank, they will accept pennies as a deposit, if they are rolled.

Typical redneck. Any sane person would know they are only inconveniencing the innocent employees and no one else, except this inbred and his trump loving friends

Who calls the DMV branch offices?

The DMV customer service main number and website are enough.

And, I guess he never heard of rolling up your change or coin star. LOLL

He actually got the pennies rolled from his bank and then hired some friends to break apart the rolls with hammers.

This dude struck it rich over the past couple of years in a niche online business. Since the summer he's bought a GMC 3500 Sierra, an Escalade for his wife, and a Corvette for his son with a learner's permit

Money is nice, but it still doesn't buy class or brains.

I think we've been through this before here. "Legal tender" means it CAN be accepted, not necessarily that it MUST be accepted. Though I can't find any case law that makes it clear about whether government agencies have a different requirement from private businesses; it is clear that a private business wouldn't have had to accept wheelbarrows of coins.

Seems like something SCOTUS wouldn't be that interested in hearing, alas!

"Legal tender" means it has to be accepted by the Federal Reserve banking system. That's the only contractual protection you have as a buyer.

Sellers have a reasonable expectation that you won't burden them with hundreds of pounds of coins during a normal transaction.

Good luck trying to convince a court otherwise.

This guy is great. Im sure all the employees of the dmv are either towelheads or mexicans. So it serves them right to have to count all those pennies. People who work at dmv are worthless pieces of shit.

I can't speak to this guy's beef with the DMV...maybe legit, maybe not. I just dunno.

As for my most recent dealing with them, it occurred to me that they have in fact improved their services.

As a matter of fact, I recently renewed my driver's license over the phone, using their automated system...and found it to be incredibly simple and efficient. Took maybe a minute or two, and a couple of days later, there it was in my mailbox.

I did it just around the time I was working with health insurance cos to get health insurance...talk about a night and day difference.

I found that dealing with DMV was a walk in the park compared to dealing with health insurance cos...

Holy cow, does that suck...
