Source? The lowest price I've seen for that period was around $1.60 for the DC area at that time, which was down from a high of over $4/gallon six months before. Downstate prices were probably 15 cents cheaper.

The gas increase during the Bush years was private companies using their speculators to gauge pricing. This time it has a lot more to do with the cost of business and inflation. When oil prices rise, gas prices rise. Delivery/pick up services have to offset that extra cost and that cost goes to the consumer.
Trend this, in this year or next when we are paying over $3 per gallon; expect to get a letter about price increases from your delivery/pick up services. Expect to pay more per gallon of milk.

Congress should pass a law that gas costs a minimum of $10 gallon. That would get so many cars off the roads and free things up to keep traffic moving. Plus, the reduction in emissions would positively impact the environment.

Gas prices were down as a Saudi favor to Hillary. They were always going back up.
Thankfully OPEC's short-sighted overproduction has forced domestic frackers to find ways to compete at the low price, which means gas isn't going to hit $4+ again.
