In the midst of a terribly executed renovation, West Springfield High School is a disaster. In addition to freezing temperatures, today was yet ANOTHER day without working toilets or any water. Kids were slipping on black ice all over the trailer park called Sparta, where the pavement was not treated at all. Parents are in an uproar over these conditions and are concerned about the safety and well-being of their students. Teachers are miserable and concerns expressed to administration seem to fall on deaf ears. Half the school is out in trailers, in a trailer park called Sparta - but you can never even find an administrator out there, as they are usually inside the building eating a lavish lunch! Student safety is not a priority at all. I feel bad for the kids and teachers who have to endure these conditions. How can you go to school with no bathrooms or running water in freezing temps? Principal Mukai has done nothing to help the situation. It needs to be addressed ASAP, for the safety and well-being of everyone who works here!

FCPS, close WSHS and the rest of the county for the culture!

Given the reduced number of working bathrooms and lack of access to fresh water, perhaps the health department needs to get involved. The administration also needs to address the growing teacher morale problem - with something other than cheerleading and candy bars.

When I was a kid in NH when that happened we'd just light all the bunsen burners in the classroom for heat. Could probably melt some snow, too, and get clean water.

This could have all been avoided if they just moved the affected students to Clifton ES during the renovation.

Nothing will change until a few parents or students alert the people at "7 on your side" or other news outlets.

Just have to validate this report about WSHS. It's true that the administration stumbles from one crisis to the next, never learning from mistakes, and seems completely unwilling to even try to establish any rapport with the front-line teachers. The complaints from teachers and parents about the admin's complete managerial ineptitude have been both prolific and corroborative.

"Sparta," as the administration has optimistically named it, is a dangerous, shabby, and poorly maintained trailer park behind the school where students, faculty, and staff are forced to endure disgusting, humiliating, and sometimes dangerous conditions while conducting ablutions. And yes, it is well nigh impossible to find an administrator in Sparta: Panera doesn't deliver there.

WSHS has, for quite a while, been an extremely high-functioning HS in Fairfax County, often despite uneven leadership. However, none of the lesser principals of West Springfield have been anywhere near as destructive to the morale, performance, and effect of teachers as the current officeholder.

But maybe it's just me.

It's pretty much true that Principal Mukai and his minions are fiddling while Rome burns. Mukai has a slush fund of 10s of thousands to provide him and his staff with daily catered meals - not just Panera, but Victors, Cedar Cafe and other local places. There are a lot more questions about the operation of WSHS than there are answers. What does admin staff do most days besides eat? Not much. Why is that incompetent boob Andy Muir still DSA? Word has it that he's blackmailing someone in Gatehouse, since he's such a loser and has survived 3 administrations at WSHS. He hires his buds as coaches and for other assignments, which don't usually go well. The great teachers, who have been holding this shit show together since Dave Smith retired are going to start bailing, too. We've had enough.

It is so sad what has happened to WSHS. It used to be a great school but the parade of incompetent administrators has really brought it's once great reputation into the gutter. All of the teachers are disgruntled and those who have remained out of loyalty to this school are now questioning their futures. None of the teachers are on board with Mr. Mukai's plan to get rid of grades, which he claims has been approved by FCPS - this continues to make teachers and students wary of the way his ridiculous vision. There is no communication, order, or structure. The students and teachers deserve better than this. Agree about Dave Smith - too bad he retired. He would be so sad to see what has happened to his beloved school.

The Spartan conditions are real; the administrators' lunches are real, however Mukai's desire to eliminate grades has NOT been approved by FCPS. The discontent and misery of the great teachers and students will not be a change factor. Parents MUST bombard the region office and Gatehouse with specific complaints or nothing will be done. No renovation has ever been planned and executed so disastrously. With regard to the meals, it is time that someone from the community FOIAs just who is paying for the food as the principal may use school funds to feed them.

Is the PTA involved? Is there a parent group to address these concerns? We have been totally oblivious to these problems and have had no information given from anyone! Can we ask Mr. Mukai for a parent meeting to address the concerns? After hearing the stories about Sparta, I am worried for the safety of these kids and how this is being handled.
