Mason Jars

where can someone get a nice selection of mason jars in fairfax? I looked at wegmans and they only had smaller sizes this time, they were out of the larger sizes I saw last time i was there, I looked at all the major chains like walmart, giant, food lion (they used to have them but stopped)...

any granny-type stores that have them? or just obvious places people know for a fact have lots in stock?

It's probably not my business, but why do you need Mason jars? Do you can jelly and stuff? I know where you can get some. At country fairs, apple orchards, Winchester Apple Festival, they sell apple butter in Mason jars. You could use the apple butter and then wash out the jars. Or go to the internet and look for canning supplies. This is kinda gross but we used to have this science teacher years ago at my school. He used Mason jars for dead stuff to show the kids. They were fascinated. In one he had a dead baby puppy. In another he had a two headed frog! In another he had a heart and he told the kids that the heart was from a kid who cheated on a science test! Oh and he had baby possums too.Have a nice weekend, Reston Peace!!!

Hugs, Trickie

I found my bounty at the Food Lion in Fair Lakes, the same place I found them last time, but they had been moved to a new aisle. Ball brand Mason jars in various sizes.

And I need them to, um, put shit in jars? Body parts sounds like a good thing to put in them, let's say I am using them for body parts.

I knew you would reply tricki, thanks for the info.

I found mine at the Walmart in Sterling, they had all the sizes. I use mine for making Lemon-cello http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/06/AR2005120600243.html

Can be made with vodka or grain... NICE!

If you like Lemon Drop Martini's from McCormick & Schmick's you will like Limon-cello. I have made it with both Grain and Vodka... Buy good lemons (like from Costco) and dont rush the time, it really mellows out after the 3rd week of steeping. I have a batch of Cherry Grain that should be ready this weekend. I love cherry coke so I thought coke and cherry grain might be the ticket.

The biggest jar in the pic, with skull, says 190 proof, alcohol, sugar, and water, unfiltered, not for sale, moderation.

If one was to chug the jar...

Dammit, the food lion in fair lakes turned into some other crap... not bottom dollar, but the other one... mason jars are no longer stocked.

Where can I get them now? I'll try WalMart Sterling as suggested.

Dear reston Peace,

I will check around for you. My really good friend still makes veggies in Mason jars. She goes to mass every morning so I will call her later. She will know. I think it's adorable that you are so domestic. You will make a wonderful husband some day. Yeah that Food Lion is going to turn into a Bloom's grocery store. I saw the trucks unloading stuff there and they have been advertising on the radio.

Hugs to reston Peace,
Trickie

I called my friend. She told me that as of the fall, Shopper's Food Warehouse had them. If you can't find them there, try a craft store. People use them to store gifts like candy, coffee and biscotti in them for gift giving.

I went to Wal MArt in sterling yesterday... I was told very rudely by the young lady in the housewares section that they are a summer seasonal item, and as such, are not in stock.

Did you see them on a specific aisle as of today? Or are you basing this on your past purchases there?

Truth Serum, you kick ass. Many thanks for the information.

I did end up getting the jars, but it's a pain in the ass. I ordered them from Ace Hardware and had them shipped to the store. It costs the same as buying it there, but takes 2-4 days.

So the recipe on Wash Post calls for a 4 quart Mason Jar. Wouldn't that be a 1 gallon mason jar? I've never seen one that big.

So looking at the pictures posted (cool labels by the way) does that mean you just took the regular recipie, divided it by 4 containers and ran with it?

Also, on the labels you have lemon oil. Is that because that is all that is left after you used the rhine to get the lemony flavor out?

This sounds pretty fun.

Cheers!

Mason jars are great to serve drinks in if you are having people over for some southern cooking or some Cajan dishes. Just a fun thing to serve Whiskey Sours or plain ole ice tea.
