Places to learn stick shift in NoVA

Is there anywhere that I can learn stick shift around here? Plan on getting a new Camaro SS with stick but I'm very rusty on how to drive it. I was hoping I could learn before I got it. Are there any rentals, schools, or dirt cheap cars I can buy to learn? And I have already asked friends, they don't want to risk their car by teaching someone how to drive. Thanks!

Driving a manual is like riding a bike. You don't forget if you already knew.
Next time, don't lie and just state you never learned.

I was just thinking the same thing.......but, I would like my kids to learn. I burned out the clutch on my dad's car when I learned. But, I drove a stick shift for years after that.

Call around to the driving schools. One of them (can't recall which) has a guy with an old Honda who gives lessons. A two-hour course will refresh you, or teach a beginner, enough to do the rest on your own.

I never said I used to drive stick, did I? My buddy let me spin around a couple times and I got the hang of getting the car moving and upshifting, but I just need to practice more to get it down before I'm confident driving a brand new $40,000 car. Next time, don't randomly assume stuff.

Believe it or not...learning to drive stick on a Camaro SS is fairly simple. That engine has such sufficient torque that it's hard to stall out on a flat or downhill road.

You might be tempted to buy some POS Honda Civic to learn on. Don't...it's trickier learning on an underpowered car like that.

When you pick up your Camaro, clutch in, 1st gear and then gently let out the clutch until it grabs and you start rolling. Then clutch in again and come to a stop. Keep doing that over snd over until you figure out the clutch's friction point. Ideally, it should be close to the floor. If it's away from the floor, your clutch is worn and needs to be replaced.

Then drop the car for the Valet Parking attendants to take care of for you.

Also plan on being carjacked before you leave.

One good reason to own a stick shift is that they very rarely get stolen. Your average car thief does not know how to drive stick. Know what I am sayin?

I used to drive a little four-speed diesel four-banger. I had a problem with the damper on the throttle linkage (kind of like a hydraulic door closer) that caused the throttle to stick open, so I pulled the part.

After pulling the damper, letting off the accelerator pedal was like putting on the brakes. My last set of brake pads lasted at least 40,000 miles.

With this modification, the car was perfect for stop-and-go commuting traffic.

It's not outdated. Autonatics are for people who see cars only as tools for transportation versus a enjoyable hobby.

You could make that argument 20 years ago, but DSGs and flappy paddle gearboxes are superior in every way. There is a reason no McLaren or Ferrari comes with that anachronism.

Look...Stick Shift nation concedes that the multi-clutch, sequential gearbox out performs even the most efficient human shifter. But, here are 2 things that a manual transmission can provide that no slush-box ever will. One is practical, one is intangible...

1) A vehicle with a manual transmission can be push started if its battery is dead and you have sufficient physics to get the vehicle rolling a bit.

2) The sheer driving pleasure of working the clutch and shifter, upshifting under hard acceleration, downshifting with a double-clutch and blipping the accelerator to match the engine's speed with the transmission's speed...there's just nothing else like it. There's a reason a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 was never offered with an automatic transmission.

In closing, owning/driving a manual transmission vehicle comes with a terrible price...especially in DC. Operating one in heavy traffic is a headache.

Drive what you like, love your choice and feel free to let the other guy make and love his choice. Why the fuck does anybody care what someone else does with their money?

LOL, every time the topic of manuals comes up, someone always says "yeah but you can push start it."

I guess if you're dumb enough to use obsolete tech, you're dumb enough to keep leaving your lights on and running down the battery. In my 30 years of driving I've never had a dead battery, and I rarely park on hills anyway, so blow it out your ass.

And as for the sheer pleasure of fucking around with an unnecessary stick and pedals, most people drive shitty enough as it is, we don't need you taking even more attention away from the road. And every goddamn time I've ridden with someone in a manual, it's nothing but getting slammed around in your seat as they shift gears-terrible ride, complete disaster. Stick sucks.

Batteries don't always die because someone left something on that drained the battery down. Sometimes your generator/alternator fails to recharge the battery because it has suffered a failure. Sometimes some brown, savage mud people steal your battery. Sometimes the wiring from the battery to the starter corrodes and the connection gets broken. Sometimes cucks like you marry a woman who "refuses" to drive a manual (as if she has any say...) which motivates you to come onto internet forums and try to extoll the virtues of the automatic transmission. Sorry about your marriage, Ace...

I learned to drive on a manual transmission and that's all I've ever driven and ever will drive. I was taught was to drive to the comfort of your passengers. Clutch in and out crisply with passengers, never slamming people around. I've had good success with that. A better question is...if you know you're going to get slammed around riding in a manual transmission car...why don't you either 1) say something to the driver 2) continue to ride with that driver? Clearly, you prefer to complain and not resolve your issues...

Also, depending on the power to weight ratio of the vehicle in question, you don't need to run it down a hill. If the vehicle is light enough and/or you have enough pushing power, you can start it on a flat or an incline. Hell, a Type-1 VW can be push started up a hill with a Chevette...

Stick rocks if you're driving a sports car. Now if you're just some faggot in a grocery getter, an automatic is no doubt better.

I went from a PDK, the best dual clutch auto in the game back to a manual. It's just not as fun or rewarding as a manual. Cost less to maintain and to buy, more fun, and better control. Yea yea I know its .04 seconds slower in the 0-60 vs the dual clutch. I could care less.

I have also had to push start an old car of mine due to a bad starter, battery was fine. The parking lot was flat (Springfield Costco) and I had no issue getting it started with 2 people pushing the car (e46 m3).

I remember when I first got my license we were in the middle of the “gas crisis”
Odd license plates could get gas one day and even numbered the next. The lines at the pumps were very long and the street along side the gas station where I was sent to fill up the car, was on a steep hill. We had a clutch and I sweated bullets every time I had to move up.

Why would anyone buying a sports car even consider getting an automatic?

Why would anyone in the Washington Metropolitan area even consider buying a vehicle?

The only reason I didn't buy an AMG car was because of the dog shit automatic transmissions they have, manual FTW.

Nope, not joking at all. I live 2 blocks from Metro and it takes me 5 blocks from my office. I Uber when necessary and still don't spend as much as a car loan, gas, maintenance and insurance annually. I have no need for a car...others' experiences may vary.

Your last sentence saved it. If your a millennial hipster, then you don't need a car. Good luck with Metro though.

I on the other hand have kids that need to be driven to school, daycare, the doctor, cub scouts, etc. And I drive a stick shift because it's more fun. Wife had a mini cooper S with auto and paddle shifters. They sucked. I gave up on the paddles because the car would decide to start shifting on it's own anyway.

My 2017 WRX has a seamless hill-assist built in, no more stress on a steep hill with an asshole mini van 2 feet off the rear bumper. I would have loved that feature when I was learning to drive on a '84 300ZX 5 speed!

I'm not a millennial...nor a hipster actually. The DC area like a lot of metropolitan areas has a lot to offer geographically and infrastructurally. Many think they "need" a car because they've never considered it's possible to live a life without one. In many fields now, teleworking has become a way of life. A friend of mine works at DOJ and he only goes into the office 5 or 6 times per year.

Assuming my above mentioned work-home parameters, if you gave me a day or two of research, I'm sure that I could locate a residence in a safe neighborhood, near public transportation, near shopping, a pediatrician and schools which would still negate the need to own a car. Again, one may still have to use Uber from time to time, although I wouldn't want to do so with putting carseats in and out obviously.

I'm not trying to troll or shit on anyone for owning a car. There's a lot I miss about not owning a car.

Sorry for the derail- but back at mr. car-less: I had a co-worker who lived in downtown DC. She didn't have a car (well actually kept it at her folks place out of town). When her 2 year old kid had a crazy high fever and she had to take him to the hospital late at night on the metro, then needing a cab to get home, she decided having a car was mandatory while being a parent.

Agree. People who say that they don't need cars are probably tree hugging libs who don't have a job or family.

How about a GTI? They're cheap. Commuter car or sports car?
