>> "Each of these stores has long lines at the checkout. It doesn't matter when you go, as they don't have enough employees to handle the load."

The new Safeway at McLean Commons is notorious for long lines. It's ridiculous. Sometimes even the self-checkout lanes have more than a dozen people waiting in line. The old store was bad, and I was hoping the new one would be managed better. It's not.

I hope they read that article and get their act together.

M. Ethan Ross is a crank. He should open his own grocery store if he doesn't like the one he complains about. Or go to Giant, Whole Foods, Shoppers Food Warehouse, Wegmans, Harris Teeter, etc. Big deal.

Just read the article and it sounds like my Safeway. Long lines, no service, more money.

I use the Pan Am Safeway....a lot!

I'd never go there at 5-6 pm any day of the week. Massive crowds. I dont blame them for "understaffing", necessarily, but then again, why the FUCK do they have 10 checkout lines? Even at Thanksgiving, only 4-5 of them are lit up and working.

All grocery stores are like this. With the margins they run at, I understand completely. Just shop off-peak....simple.

I miss the Safeway on Maple Ave. It was never busy, parking lot was always empty, and it had a much better layout than the Pan AM Safeway.

The new shopping carts are irritating at Safeway. They installed magnetic locks on the wheels to prevent people from stealing. They are supposed to be turned off at checkout, but they still lock up when people try to go near the exits.

They should do the same thing as Aldie. Carts are locked and are unlocked if you stick a quarter in this lock thingy that attached to another cart. Put the cart back and you get your quarter back. Keeps people from leaving carts in the parking lot.

Carts always are pushed into cars, last comment makes sense.

I doubt that would help much. I'd rather leave the cart in the parking lot than going out of my way just to get 25 cents. Now if it was $5, then I'd put the cart back.

Aldies aren't really put in ritzy neighborhoods.

I guess if it's a Harris Teeter in Lansdowne then a $5 would be more appropriate.

The only Aldie I have seen is the one in that desolate shopping center near Dale City and Woodbridge.

Supposedly Adies are big up north.

Blessed are the murderous.

Anyone that leaves the cart loose in the parking lot is a dirty sinful bastard and I hate them. Especially when they've got those places to put the cart out there.

Growing up around here, I've shopped at Safeway a lot in the past 50 years. But I recently tore up my Safeway loyalty card and stopped using their delivery service. My experience with the manager of the Safeway in Bailey's Crossroads, where they were failing to refrigerate meat, turned me against them.

I hope the chain fails as quickly as possible and is replaced by Wegman's or anything. I recommend avoiding Safeway.

This reminded me to send Safeway a complaint letter I've been thinking about for a long time. (Because they keep sending me "please come back we haven't seen you" emails. I used to use their delivery service all the time.) Having gotten around to writing it, I can now unsubscribe from Safeway.

I tried to send it to their web site, but that's broken! Figures.
So I printed it and stuck it in an actual paper envelope.
Wow, paper! Amazing...

If you want to write them a letter I'll save you the
trouble of looking up their address:

Customer Service Center
Safeway Inc. - M/S 10501
PO Box 29093
Phoenix, AZ 85038-9093

I doubt that they really give a shit, certainly their local people do not.
But sometimes it feels good to get it off your chest.

In Germany, they did the same thing with 1 mark coins.

You could make enough to buy a pack of cigarettes by gathering up a couple of shopping carts on your way into the store.

When I first moved here all the grocery stores had barriers to prevent the carts from being moved beyond the sidewalk in front of the store.

You could either grab all your bags and walk to your car, or you could leave your cart on the sidewalk and drive up to load your car.

They even had people to help you load your car.

Back then, if you drove an hour or so away, the grocery stores allowed you to push your cart into the parking lot. I just assumed it was a class thing, the upper classes preferred to not have errant shopping carts scratch their cars, and the lower classes didn't seem to care.

Then this area had yet another influx of outsiders, and they removed those barriers.

Oddly, this happened about the same time those same outsiders lobbied to have HOV-3 reduced to HOV-2.

Cool idea to have barriers. But now everyone would be backed up like the Beltway to get their groceries. Imagine the number of wrecks!

The Safeway on Willard Way is bad. I don't know if they have replaced the cases where they have meat, but the last time I saw them they looked like they could use a good scrubbing. I wouldn't say it looked "third world," but it could use some updating. I don't shop there anyway because it's too expensive for my tastes.

Yes, it has a going out of business look to it.

Safeway is awful, as I've been to these ones as well and agree completely. You cannot get out of there(in line), unless you are sitting around for twenty or so minutes. The crowds do end up in aisles, and its a complete cluster all the way around. Safeway is to be avoided.

Dude,

Safeway is actually good, as they've been lowering prices in the last month or so. Yeah, so one has to sit in line for some time, but isn't that like any other grocery store? We live in an urban area dude!
