DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON RESTON TOWN CENTER PARKING.

Beginning on January 3, Reston Town Center employees, guests and patrons will be charged to park.

The fees will be $6 an hour. Just go to any of the free parking restaurants and shopping malls that are just minutes away.

Plaza America off Sunset Hills has free parking. Lots of great restaurants in Herndon, all have free parking. Lake Anne Plaza and North Gate all have free parking. Ned Divines in Herndon has FREE PARKING.

It's not really about the money. It's about keeping low rent people like you away.

No it's about the fact that malls and shopping meccas are dying a slow painful death.

I know pointing out the lack of rational thinking is not often a helpful exercise, but the call for a boycott perplexes me. Why not a mere notice of the new fees for parking, under the guise that people can decide for themselves whether the parking fees are justified, or choose to take their business elsewhere. The managers of the property will find out relatively quickly whether the demand for the attractions at this location is as insensitive to increases in price for use of the facilities. A boycott presumes that there is some kind of moral imperative involved - this is just parking fees - and let the market determine the efficacy of the new plan - it is not like being deprived of visiting Reston Town Center will impair anyone's life experiences.

Yup...seems reasonable...Amazon has been kicking brick and mortar's ass for 20 years. Charging people to park will clearly encourage them to come and shop...

Fuck that...where's my smoking jacket, pipe, slippers, credit cards and tablet? I've got shopping to do and I'll go ahead and spend the $12 on parking to subsidize my Peking Duck delivery...

BOYCOTT parking fees at the town courthouse - because it creates a problem for the poor who wish to fight corrupt gov - which is exacltly what the fuck fx co gov is up to - preventing lawsuits that would end their corrupt run

Agreed, and point out comparable shopping offers free parking, such as Tyson's Corner and One Loudoun.

It must be just terrible to have to worry about trivial things like this. I feel quite sorry for you all.

I used to go there at least weekly for business lunches, haven't been to RTC since they announced. There are too many businesses that actually want customers.

"Paid parking is in effect 24 hours a day, Monday through Friday. Weekends (from 12:00 a.m. Saturday through 12:00 a.m. Monday) are free, as are major holidays and premier events (see below)."

(From https://www.restontowncenter.com/parking/parking-faq/)

They only list six places who will validate parking.

Also from the FAQ:

What consultation has taken place?

Reston Town Center is a unique environment that operates as an urban mixed use environment. This is also known as “Second City”. In order to preserve the parking rights of our visitors and at the same time enhance our customer’s experience, we extensively researched all options and identified the ParkRTC model. Reston Town Center has been reviewing customer recommendations and feedback for several years, especially concerns about the availability of parking spaces during busy shopping periods.

Well, this will certainly fix the “availability of parking spaces” problem! I sure won’t be going there if I don’t have to...

That’s the only place where they seem to list any problem they’re trying to solve. Oh, and the reason more retailers aren’t validating: because the retailers have to pick up the cost. So…this “reason” makes no sense, unless they think there are a lot of people just hanging out during “busy shopping periods” and not shopping. Which I somehow doubt; it’s not enough of a mall scene.

This doesn't make any sense unless either (a) they've deluded themselves into thinking that they'll make money @ $2/hour (not $6, as someone posted above) or (b) they're trying to force even more store turnover, which seems unlikely.

Really looking forward to the paid parking and I wish they had done it sooner. It will help reduce crowds in general and reduce the low rent clientele. This is going to make RTC better!

Completely stupid as the paid parking is, let's stick to the facts so far: it's $2/hour, not $6. See the "How much does it cost to park?" item on https://www.restontowncenter.com/parking/parking-faq/

And no, I'm not being an apologist for this insane move. Just sayin', whoever said $6/hour seems to be confused.

1. At present, the businesses are not charged a per-customer fee for parking. This means that the cost of the parking infrastructure must be part of the rent charged to each business.

2. The rational for charging for parking is to keep Metro users and other non-shoppers from using the spaces and making them unavailable for shoppers.

3. Under the proposed system: If a shopper has his ticket validated by a business and who is already subsidizing the parking by paying rent (as he does now), why should the business be charged again for the customer's parking?

Conclusion: This is realey about a new revenue stream for the greedy developer -- soaking both the business and the customers.

Remember that the metro will be within walking distance. That means Spic-Niggers-Chinks will try to avoid paying there.

Go to Tysons if you want free parking, oh wait.

Exactly. Their claimed motives don't match the implementation.

P.S. "rationale" is the noun, not "rational".

tOO MANY nEW jERSEYITES AND nEW yORKERS TAKING OVER THE LOCAL BUSINESSES. They found that they can keep the riff-raff and bar fighters out of the local bar/eateries by charging outrageous parking fees, limiting their services to the "well-coiffed 1%'ers."

I've lived in Reston for 33 years. I enjoyed a nice lunch with an old friend a few weeks ago at the Reston Town Center when parking was free. It was a pleasant farewell to "downtown" Reston. From now on I'll be patronizing nearby commercial areas with free parking, which is everywhere but the RTC.
I encourage others to do the same.

Good luck to you John. There are plenty of nice places with free parking out in Manassas, maybe you should think about moving there as it would be a better fit for you.
