In the wake of the fatal police shooting of John Geer in 2013, Fairfax County created a Civilian Review Panel which is NOT AUTHORIZED to review police shootings.

Sorry for the long subject line.

But really, can you believe this shit? A great publicity stunt that adds to the bureaucracy but does nothing to address the problem of police misconduct cover-ups in shooting incidents?

Geer’s family struggled for two years to learn basic details about his death, which occurred during a standoff with police. Geer was standing in the doorway of his home with his hands up when Officer Adam Torres fired a single shot into Geer’s chest.

The long delay in releasing information, including whether the officer involved might face changes, prompted the family to file a lawsuit, resulted in a federal investigation and even drew intervention from members of Congress. The county didn’t release the name of the officer who fired the fatal shot until a judge ordered details of the investigation be made public.

This Civilian Review Panel is a sham.

The BOS is appointing an auditor to review police shootings, not a panel of civilians. They review complaints against officers.

Really? That was approved months ago, and still no person appointed.

This is all a smoke screen. Neither the auditor nor the panel will have access to any records except what the police chief decides to release.

Goal #1: Protect Fairfax County from lawsuits.

Goal #2: Stop the angry populace from rising up.

In a just world Officer Torres would be executed for the murder he obviously committed, and every officer on the scene would do jail time for not summoning an ambulance for an hour after the ultimately successful murder attempt.

How will they measure the success of this panel?

What is being measured from previous years so that we can see if there is any change?

This is typical.

Look at the citizens of Fairfax. Just randomly pick the first 10 you see at Costco next time and pretend they are on the panel. Most of them couldn't review a 7-11 receipt and explain it to anyone.

If Geer - and everyone else in that situation had followed commands - he would be alive today. If a cop tells you to come out of the house with your hands up, do it. Geer learned this is not some fucking game where you just do whatever you want when the cops arrive.

Does his girlfriend love him more now after his stupid attention seeking stunt?

Fuck this guy already. Temper tantrums are for children, not armed adults.

The position has been listed, and it takes time to hire people plus hire the staff the auditor will need. Not to mention, what's the hurry exactly? The auditor reviews police shooting cases resulting in deaths. Fairfax hasn't had one of those in over 2.5 years.

I'm no cop apologist, but someone needs to explain to me why the county needs this without using the words John Geer. Fairfax PD by and large does a good job. They haven't had a fatal shooting in that time span serving a county of well over a million people. Meanwhile this same county is in a massive budget deficit and they want to appoint a person that would cost the county over a million dollars a year who, in the last two years would have had NOTHING to do. Money well spent.

This is nothing more than pandering to anti cop haters. Sorry but it's true. There's no angry populace here, only angry people on fairfax underground. No one else around here cares. Spend that money on something more worthwhile.

Oh and the panel can't get that info because the state code doesn't allow it. So maybe the gripes should be at the state legislature.

Because some spic murderer in a uniform might just get a boner and ejaculate a bullet into you 45 minutes or so into the encounter, in spite of the fact that you are unarmed.

I hope the police send a spic murderer to shoot your entire family and get away with it. But I'll settle for just you.

Thank you for this information. Accountability does not come primarily from committees and auditors.

Because there were other police shootings and death-in-custody events that were covered up. And by covered up, I mean keeping the information secret until a judge saw through their nonsense and made them release it.

For someone who claims to not be a cop apologist, you sure do have a lot of reasons why the information can;t be made public in a timely manner.

We'll see what happens next time there is an incident, as we all know there will be a next time.

The reason is I practice law in VA. And I know how the Supreme Court ruled in the Garrity v. New Jersey case and I also know how the Virginia Officer procedural bill of rights works. Feel free to read them yourself.

That's ok...Geer won't do that again. He learned.
