Looking to 2017 – below are the two new class 6A Regions that comprise the NOVA area & the new 6A Districts. When I first heard about some of the proposed changes I thought the Concorde District/Conference 5 losing Robinson and picking up Madison was going to be bad for overall district strength. I guess not. Dropping Herndon and Robinson and picking up Madison could arguably make District 1 the strongest.

South Lakes must be happy that they at least have 5 out-of-conference dates available to schedule some tough opponents.

Playoff-wise I am thinking the two regions about even. Region D perhaps a little stronger at the top but weaker in the middle. Now I will have to back and look at the powerpoints and see how the playoffs would have shaken out if these were the regions this year. I was kind of in a hurry so it's possible I made a mistake or two. Feel free to abuse if so. Actually, someone will anyway.

Going by the VHSL Power Points each team had at the end of the 2016 season and assuming each of the new regions will take 8 playoff teams, below is how the playoffs would have gone if this had been the arrangment this year:

6A NORTH REGION C
1. Lake Braddock 34.4
2. South County 31.3
3. Freedom (Woodbridge) 31.2
4. West Potomac 30.8
5. Hayfield 30.6
6. T.C. Williams 28.1
7. Mount Vernon 26.8
8. W.T. Woodson 26.1

6A NORTH REGION D
1. Madison 33.1
2. Westfield 32.4
3. South Lakes 31.8
4. Centreville 31.5
5. Patriot 28.5
6. Battlefield 28.0
7. Hylton 27.6
8. Oakton 26.4

Summary: Robinson, Washington-Lee out. Freedom, Hylton in.

Top 5 NR 6A for next year

1. Westfield
2. South Lakes
3. Lake Braddock
4. SOCO
5. Centreville

The gap between 1 and 2 will be a lot bigger than it has been the past 3 seasons.

With OS graduating a lot, and the South weakening, I have Westfield taking the region.

Briar Woods Head Coach Charlie Pierce takes leave of absence. ?? What is the real reason and why is no one saying anywhere why? Health, scandal or burnout?

If you saw the Talent level he has to work with next year, you would take a leave of absence also!

Are you high? CVHS has the best QB, RB's & WR's. We are loaded for the next 3 years! Our class of 2019 & 2020 will remind you of the state title teams (teams I say cuz Ocean Lakes are cheaters) we had a few years ago.

Correction: CVHS has Woodson's best RB.

Just curious why do you have CVHS ranked 1? Westfields loses a ton of their top talent at key positions. SL definitely could be on top with their backfield.

I would say you must be a kid, probably one of these players. Please don't take offense to that statement but you're dreaming.

Those Centreville teams you're comparing the upcoming ones to had players Turner, Boose, Tutt, Nickens-Yzer, Richbourg, & Walter/Ferrick for skill. Then Wiggins, O'Connor, Love, Skule, Smith, Liddle and Jordan & Christian Brooks for strength. There may have been a few others but these were all legitimate D1 level guys whether it was football or lacrosse. Maybe not O'Connor but he and Wiggins made every team they faced crap their pants.

There may be some talent on the upcoming CVHS team, as there is on Westfield, SOCO, Lake Braddock, South Lakes, and a bunch of others. But to state or even think the Wildcats posses what the 2013 & 2014 teams had is not only a stretch but a dream. Because those 2 years that team probably possessed the best talent any team from this area has in a long time if not arguably ever!

Walters was big FB/TE that could throw decently but was best suited for running and getting the tough yards, by far not some great talent. Ferrick was mediocre at best that saw the rush too much and was inaccurate. Egberts will be better than either of them, he's a much better passer than the other 2.

As far as backfield and WR's, this new crop will be very & Lb's (Kuzemka & Edmonds) comparable to the kids who made the state title run. We will have a few linemen that will grow and burst on the scene. Plus our coach Haddock and his assts Lamb etc are better than Almost every other team (not WHS)

1 or 2 top end players does not make a regional championship contender (ahem, Lake Braddock). So SL will take a back seat to teams with more depth.

I have Centreville ranked ahead of Westfield because I believe their senior class this year is solid while Westfield has the weakest senior class since 2009 & 2010 and we know how those seasons turned out. People can crack on Centreville all they want but they have excellent coach, a solid program and the same feeder system as Westfield. I think they have the players to finish in front of Westfield in 2017. We shall see.

Okay, you're a true homer, gotta be a player or a dad. Egbers is nowhere near the athlete that Walter was, I'll give you Ferrick was no superstar. Egbers also does not have the physicality that Haddock typically has at QB. If Egbers is so damn good why wasn't he the starting QB this past season. His best days, at youth ball where he could play down due to his slight frame and dominate over younger kids is gone.

The two kids you named at the LB position, I looked at their film. Please don't compare them to Wiggins or Love, cause when they were both sophomores they were beasts. They were laying waste to ball carriers and running over anyone in their way. Not hanging on at the ankles, bee bopping into an open lane, or coming in when the carrier is under wraps and joining in.

You're going to have to come with some better ammo than that. Please, understand this, the team you're attempting to compare these current players to comes along once in a programs lifetime, look at the past. Not too mention those players were already impact players as sophomores, the kids you've named are not.

What are the top 10 rivalries in this area? New to NVA, came from PA. My son will be a Freshman next year. Just curious. Thanks for your input.

Can you go back and show me where I said Egbers is a better athlete than Walters? I said he is the best passer that CVHS has had in recent memory. CVHS will have a number of impact players from the 2020 squad like before. Let it play out, watch. No I'm not a dad or a kid or a homer, I've coached both squads and see a lot of similarities.

Don't know about top 10 but would go with below for current top 5:

1. Westfield v. Centreville: most students from both schools are from Centreville zip codes and play SYA youth football together until high school. 6 state championships between them in last 17 years.
2. Lake Braddock v. Robinson
3. Madison v. Oakton
4. Stone Bridge v. Briar Woods
5. Battlefield v. Patriot

I'm sure old timers and eastern area folks will disagree.

You call yourself "frequent watcher of football" yet you list Stone Bridge-Briar Woods as the # 4 Rivalry in the area?

Um, well, they have played TWICE.

Not twice last year... TWICE EVER!

And at 7-15 over the past two years, Briar Woods is not the #1 rival of anyone.

Well, perhaps maybe Westfield, since that was one of their 4 wins this past year!

Perhaps you meant Stone Bridge's real rival - Broad Run?

Wow, sore or something? You know teams have bad games, true test of a winning team is one that improves as the season goes on.

Hell, even the Patriots lost to the bills this year, so yeah, it happens.

And no, I'm no Westfield homer....

Was just poking fun at Westfield since they are truly the top team from the area - it is their obnoxious fans that I can't stand. (They did go 0-2 v Loudoun County, however).

1. Westfield v Centreville ( FWOF was correct - close proximity and feeder leagues adds to intensity, as does each teams's history of excellence.)

2. Broad Run v Stone Bridge ( Like WHS and CVHS, but these two schools are even closer in proximity). This year's game was best finish in the area, then SB bounces back in the playoffs. Standing room only every year.

3. Braddock v Robinson (Intense, but gets just a little diminished every year since both usually fall below expectations in the playoffs. Still, hot, hot rivalry.)

Big drop-off after these top three...

How about SOCO? I should say what is wrong with them? They field a big team, in numbers and size, but can't get over the "hump", is it coaching or uncoachable kids? They have a HUGE freshman RB that played on JV, about 6'1"-2", over 200 lbs, dragging entire defenses, watch out for him on varsity next year.

SOCO. You got it pegged - numbers, community support and a lot of really good athletes. I think some of these teams like LB and SoCo get sucked into playing these cupcake schedules - not all their fault - and just don't play well together when they hit a well-coached team in the playoffs. Their game planning just seems to be inadequate. Never would have thought they would be a 7-3 regular season team last year.

SoCo season/confidence Def started to come apart at the seams when WHS beat them on their own hole field.

Apparantley, more like a rumour that coach poythress lake braddock coack for 10+ years, is on a leave of absence for calling a gay student a "faggot". The rumours are that, they might fire him as coach and or teacher, not clear yet. However Poythress gone from lake braddock would leave a huge gap in the coaching staff and legacy of Lake braddock. Mans practically built the program from its ashes since the early 2000's.

Coach P did an average job at LB. He will be remembered as the choke artist when WF came back from a 16-3 4th quarter deficit to beat LB a few years back. There have been other chokes as well like each season in the playoffs. Who couldn't win at LB? With those numbers and demographics any average coach would be just as successful. An above average coach like Simmons or Taylor or Pannoni would win the big games where Coach P has failed.

He’s an above average coach. LB was 17-21 the four years before he was hired. They are 44-8 the last 4 seasons. Hasn’t had a losing season since his first year. 12 consecutive years. It is not easy. Anywhere.

Above average coach like Simmons, Taylor or Pannoni, would win big games, really?
Taylor couldn't win at Robinson, Pannoni couldn't win at Centreville so thats a foolish argument!! Poythress has done a very good job at LB

maybe an above average coach, but the Principal rules the roost in a FCPS. If you have "personality issues" with the Principal, you won't be there for long. His admin leave is just the start of a long slow slide out the door.

I read a lot of people whining and complaining of the more successful schools illegally recruiting/poaching kids from what should be their school but what evidence is there that this actually happened. Names? Proof? Maybe the kid and his family actually moved districts. It's actually quite hard for a kid to go to a school he's not zoned for, a lot of hoops they make you jump through and still has to be approved in the end by school board.

Quite true. Anyway, it really doesn't matter. NOTHING can stop you from moving to another school district. I know in some states the athletic organizations can make a kid sit out a year if it is determined that the move was solely for athletic reasons. But I don't believe that is the case for VHSL. Correct me if I am wrong...

True for VHSL. If you actually move to a new address, there is no restriction.
Also, if you claim mental health distress and beg for participation in your new school, you can transfer in mid-season and join the team. It all comes down to signatures.
Here's a screwed up example of how the system doesn't work:
Student lives in HS #1 boundaries.
Student starts 9th grade at HS #2, using a curriculum transfer provision (HS#1 was an IB school, and student transferred to HS#2 because it was an AP school).
Student played sports at HS#2.
Student academically struggled at HS#2, and in 10th grade began attending HS#1.
Remember, student actually lives in the boundary of HS#1.
Student played fall sport which means student had to submit VHSL forms including which school student attended previous year, and what home address.
HS#1 staff reviewed forms, saw no red flag, so student played fall sport.
HS#2 found out that the student is now playing that sport at a different school, and called VHSL to complain about illegal player/transfer.
HS#1 reviewed forms again, and was then told by VHSL that there is a special form that should have been completed before season to show approval of the student transfer.
(stay with me...)
So student is attending the school he lives near, but VHSL took away the Wins from that team because a fucking paper wasn't signed.
Coach, DSA and head of FX Co athletics head to headquarters of VHSL to appeal.
No luck. Sorry. F' you.
6-4 team turns in to a 4-6 team and gets fucked out of playoff spot.

There aren't many VA kids who go play football for private schools cuz they're all in MD & DC (at least the good ones)because of the distance and hassles you have to jump through for the commute. GZ, STJ, DM offer 2 shuttle points in VA at 6:30am and they offer one shuttle ride back so if your kid does play a sport they are short and will have to find an alternative method home after practice, realistically it's a hard thing to do plus keep on top of all the homework eat shower, your kid won't go to bed til 11-12 and be up crack of dawn. I know first hand how hard it is.

Who did WF piss off for them to make a schedule like that? I can see this past years squad surviving that but I don't know about next years with all the big losses (Petrillo, Jewel,Quitogga, Eckert, Ivory & Rehman etc) 6-4, 7-3 best case

Can you at least wait until the summer to start trolling? Yes, Westfield loses talents just like they seem to every year but so does every other team, the difference is that Westfield has proven that they can replace talent. Additionally, even though they lose a lot, you have to realize that a healthy Westfield team last year was miles ahead of everyone else, so it's not like it was a tight race and Westfield lost some big pieces. Finally, for the first time in years Westfield seems to have elite talent. They've gotten by on coaching and depth but now they have a truly elite player. Yeah they might not be as good as last season or even the year before but they don't have to be to win the Northern Region.

It is NEVER too early to start trolling. Been 2 months since there has been any meaningful low blows, idiotic insults, brash boasting, insufferable gloating and monotonous unimaginative trolling.

So is the LB coach gone or no?

I really would like to know who has this Lady Boner over some Kid who has not produced, ZERO, Nada, Zip, Nothing at the Varsity Level. The Same Jack-ass keeps coming on here claiming some Elite Status. Until One has some Freakish stats or accomplishments under their belt, he is just another Number. Elite Player, who is he going to throw it to, who is he going to hand it off to, who is going to Block for him.

Yeah, who is this? Because if it's the upcoming QB I'd hold my proclaiming of elite status until he throws a pass in a meaningful varsity game. Also, whomever the poster is I guess he's unaware of a few pretty decent players they've had over the past few years.

We all know CVHS will be back on top this coming year and we have the best QB Egbers, RB's and TE, our Def will be laying the smack down on al our opponents. We need just 1 WR to step up and it's States all over again.

Just not having mullet head (who was your team MVP this past season) will make you worse this up coming year and put a lot of pressure on your def, I don't know how many times he bailed you out by flipping field position and making your opponents go 80 or more yds to have to score plus those 45-50yd field goals aren't happening this upcoming year.

Don't worry about Mullet Head, the New Aussie Kid will make you soon forget about Billy Ray Cyrus ever Kicking a Ball in the Northern Region. This Kid is actually from New Zealand, about 6-4" 215 can really Drive the Ball, some teams have all the Luck!

Concur on both points. Waaay tooo early to make such claims. Truth be told it is not a certainty at all that he will even be the starting QB in 2017.

Now here's an actual elite Westfield sophomore QB in 2002.

I didn't know Cisco played football for WHS, wonder why he stopped making music? Wow you all also had Marshall Mathers too!

As for Sisco, the New Tran- Rule would presently exclude her from the Guys Locker Room.

Sad week in the 757...Evidently Coach Dee suffered all through the 2016 season but never missed practices or games. He resigned after their game with Westfield. Smith is interviewing new coach prospects with over 20 candidates, 10 of which are from out of state. In August they have another possible ESPN HS Kickoff Game when Vero Beach travels to Chesapeake in late August.

So who does Oscar Smith have coming back that is of note? New talent? With a 3rd coach in 3 years will they still be class of the 757 in 2017?

Don't worry about Smith, like every year, they'll have 3-4 D1 recruits with the rest of the team of overachievers. And, they'll likely be the favorites to represent the 6A South again in Hampton come mid December. The rest of their coaching staff is in place and a couple of them poised to take over for Coach Dee. If an outside candidate is hired, they'll have to be a comparable to Richard Morgan or Coach Dee. There are a few coaches in VA that could fit but how many of them would leave is the question?

Oscar Smith promoted their Defensive Coordinator, Scott Johnson for their Head Coaching job. Keeping things the same essentially for the Coaching Staff was a good move. It's hard to replace Rchard Morgan & Bill Dee though. We'll see how things work out come late November & December

I have a friend who's a teacher and also an asst coach at rival school. Also LB HC is not well liked by the Principal according to my source. Looking more like they will try to find someone currently on staff to take over "interim" for this up coming year.

That's all well and good but what the question I was looking to be answered was what particular VA championship team is SJC attempting to recruit their QB away from?

Well, we have 6 choices: Westfield-nope-sr qb; Highland Springs-nope-sr qb; Salem-nope-sr qb; Blacksburg-maybe; Appomattox-maybe; Riverheads-nope-sr qb.

So basically must be talking about Grant Johnston or Javon Scruggs.

With LB HC out, who's front runner to take over? Also what impact will this have on the program if any? Think any kids will sit out, move/xfr (be good for Robinson) will CVhS get any transfers (they always seem like they're getting transfers, Stonewall kid moving there for next season).

Hiring process will be interesting. How many if any staff stays. Some really good guys there. Remember Robinson will be in the Patriot division now. That will definitely help their win catagory. I think both LB and Robinson lose several key players, how they rebuild will be interesting. Centreville and Westfields will always be competitive.
