Coast Guard Fires at Boat in Potomac: Report
By JIM IOVINO

Print Email Share Buzz up! TWITTER FACEBOOK

CNN is reporting that the Coast Guard has fired 10 rounds at a "suspicious vessel" in the Potomac River.

It was not immediately clear if the shots were warning shots or if they were shots directed at the boat.

A temporary restricted zone had been set up on the river due to the Pentagon 9/11 ceremony, according to CNN.

WaPo has a 'Breaking News' headline that the CG is conducting a training exercise.

If that's true, someone at the Coast Guard needs to be busted down a rank or two. Who the Hell would think doing a training exercise on the Potomac in restricted space on 9/11 was a good idea?

Seriously...how hard is this to figure out? Reminds me of the movie being filmed over the summer with explosions on the Potomac - just not something that you should be doing in and around DC without LOTS of planning and coordination.

No, that was a White House person who was later fired. Coast Guard used to be a part of DOT and is how part of DHS.

No shots were fired. It was a trainning mission. The whole shots fired thing was cadre transmitting over the radio to simulate shots fired. So stupid to do on 9/11.

That's the Pentagon's business, now isn't it? Sure, they could'be picked another day, but the USCG was in the area anyways due to heightened security, and so they most likely figured on testing their readiness while they had the entire group together.

The Media was irresponsible in reporting the "incident", but go figure, since when have they been responsible? Just take a look at that NYT POS who cost a Soldier his life through his arrogance. The Media hasn't done much good in the past eight years.

You can't even begin to compare the two. One involved a dumb photo op, the other a security maneuver. They're not even in the same category.

On an additional note, when I learned more about the story, the more convinced I became that the USCG really did nothing wrong at all.

During the exercise, one of the Coasties verbally said (literally): "Bang, Bang, Bang" 10 times, and then responded: "10 Shots have been fired".

Now first of all, let me ask: Who in the world says "Bang, Bang, Bang" when shooting a real gun? Not to mention, why would the USCG announce "Bang, Bang, Bang" when they're actually engaging a vessel? It sounds more like a children's shootout with fingers or cap guns, and for the media to somehow overlook that common sense aspect just goes on to further display their stupidity.

Second, the CNN journalist/anchor was pointing all over the live footage attempting to make-out the "Suspect Vessel", when the only vessels in sight were BRIGHT RED, with "U.S. Coast Guard" emblazoned all over their hull and super structure.

Third, if anyone even paid attention to the footage, they would've noticed that the bow guns weren't even manned!

Absolutely pathetic.

The USCG is worthless nowadays. Just another fucking SWAT team waving guns at taxpayers, only they do it in boats.

USCG was once dedicated to saving lives at sea, but no more. Unless there are cameras around to record it (think Deadliest Catch), you are on your own out there. Harbor Police agencies like Maryland Marine will still help boaters but they are stretched pretty thin. The "commercial towers" are thieves that should be called only as a last resort.

Your best bet for help on the water is other boaters, so when you're out there, monitor VHF16 and render assistance if you can!

The Coast Guard is under DHS, not DOD. Unless you are suggesting the Pentagon should have scheduled the 9/11 memorial event for a date that wasn't 9/11.

Can you post a comment without being such a condescending smartass? He didn't say anything about the Coast Guard being under DOD, and he obviously meant the Coast Guard exercise could be re-scheduled, not the 9/11 memorial.

Read a little about this in a WSJ article.

Fucking assholes, in the end, they didn't really want to apologize. They were saying "Well... we clearly announced before and after on the radio that this was a training exercise." Yeah.. like everyone in the area is always tuned to the appropriate frequency to listen in. They also said that they run these exercises multiple times a week and, thus, people shouldn't freak out.

To make matters worse, the White House press secretary said "I don't want to question matters that help to protect our borders." Nice way to dodge the question and not admit someone screwed up.

This comes down to a bad call made by (probably) a lower level official. PERIOD. They knew it was September 11 and could have held off a day or ran it on Thursday.

Well..allow me to be the first conspiracy nut..perhaps it was all very intentional. Seems to me the entire republkan party is involved in a concerted effort to delegitimize the president...perhaps this was a shot of the bow telling the president to stay on his side of the potomac or risk harm. Military exercises are often "messages"...this was a clear message.

I realize that you have no knowledge of military exercises or operations whatsoever, but are you trying to say that the Coast Guard is conspiring with the Republican Party to send Barck Hussein Obama a "message"? I'd say you've been drinking cheap wine all night and need to sober up.

If I understand correctly, there were no shots fired at any time.

As part of a training exercise, a Coast Guard officer transmitted
a radio message to someone else participating in the exercise.
The message was "Bang, bang. We have just fired 10 shots."

Some CNN news reporter was monitoring a radio and overheard this,
paniced, and started making phone calls to the Pentagon.
They didn't know what he was talking about, but since it was CNN
saying that shots were fired on the river, they began a response.
Eventually this included issuing a terror alert, which caused
National Reagan Airport to be shut down for a little while.

In other words: a total clusterfuck.

DHS didn't tell other agencies about the exercise, even though that's
supposedly that kind of communication is the reason that DHS was created.
And then DHS apparently wasn't able to piece together that "shots fired
on the river from a Coast Guard vessel" was a training exercise that
is run every week *by DHS* itself. I feel so much safer now, knowing
that DHS is there to coordinate information about emergencies.

What's interesting is the lack of news media picking up on such
an incredible fuck-up. Maybe they're afraid of DHS or something.
Or maybe they don't want to make "the media" look bad, since it
was a CNN reporter that instigated the entire thing.

Or maybe I've got the story confused, but that's how I understand it.

No shots were fired at any point.
It was all pretend.
Amazing!

The USCG is still under DOD in certain circumstances, and since they are still a branch of the Military, DOD has authority to take control as needed.
