2017 HS Football

I know there are still some playoff weeks left, but I was curious to see what jobs do you think will be open. Obviously, some new coaches really had an impact on the area this year(good and bad).

Don't you know that the 2017 thread starts right after the state championship game. Go to the 2016 thread.

Since the meals tax did not pass, FCPS has to make a lot of cuts, most likely including sports. The money just isn't there.

Seems like sniveltard is a little upset someone beat him to the punch on the the next HS football thread. Probably had it all typed up and ready to submit. LOL

2014 thread started 11/19/2013 and it did just fine, even with the early start. Sucks to be you luzer.....

Well, definitely not at Westfield, unless Simmons decides to go to the pros. If he expresses interest, the skins would punt Gruden in a NY minute and sign Coach Simmons to a multiyear contract asap.

McLean went 1-9. They only beat Fairfax, an 0-10 team that might be competitive in 1A or 2A. Shaun Blair, the McLean coach, is coming off his second 1-9 season and his talent from the fresh/soon level doesn't get any better. Langley didn't have a great season either. The McLean area is losing good players to the private schools. If you're looking for a coaching job, look no further than McLean, Langley, and Fairfax. Just don't expect a winning season anytime soon.

What programs specifically do you think are taking up all the talent? Gonzaga? PVI? O'Connell?

There's just not enough black Catholics in Fairfax to support a football or BB program. Good LAX program though

Looks like the Wildcats have a few impact players on their team returning next year. They have one of the highest rated D players in the area with outside LB Caleb Brooks. I'd guess the reign of the Bulldogs is over after today, at least for next year.

2015 was not so good for the Wildcats, but this year there were a decent team - 9-3 with a playoff win - probably should have had 2 po wins.

I would think looking at their roster overall they will have a slight drop-off next season but they should be a solid team.

Madison loses practically every starter outside of Finney and a few lineman. They will regress and finish in the middle of the Concorde, behind their big brother Oakton.

It's obvious that you haven't been paying attention to Madison Football this year.

Koshuta and Thomas will make up the best Backfield in the region with Finney on the edge. Not to mention multiple sophomores that played on the OL and DL this year.

Which sophomores played on the DL??
Their DL starters were Ragabeh, Porter, Goldsmith, and some other senior.
Besides, Madison will get exposed for playing a SOFT conference schedule these past few years. That all changes when they have to play Cville, Weastfiled, and Oakton all in same season.

Top 5 NR 6A for next year

1. Westfield
2. South Lakes
3. Lake Braddock
4. SOCO
5. Centreville

The gap between 1 and 2 will be a lot bigger than it has been the past 3 seasons.

With OS graduating a lot, and the South weakening, I have Westfield taking the region.

Is Westfield a dynasty? Has a Northern 6A ever won two in a row? Not in my lifetime. Can they do it again in 2017? Yes, they can. It's the coaching. And the massive 3000 student pool to choose from.

They have a good shot next year but not because of the 3000 student pool. In fact, I think Lake Braddock, Oakton, Robinson, and Chantilly have more kids then Westfield this year.

That MV schedule has really softened up - with the new coach and almost their whole roster returning - I could see them easily winning 8 games with potential to win more depending on how Hayfield and West Po reload - What a difference a new coach makes- that place was a disaster this time last year - I still dont think they will win any playoff games - not big enough- will be interesting to see everyone else's schedules

TJs schedule is all over the place - hopefully they can schedule some teams they can beat- i dont know much about deaf schools

Marshall also has a weak schedule - but i think they lose alot, so they should have a shot to make the playoffs in 5a

Rumor is the TC coach is leaving for edison? My question, why?

Sean Curry. Head coach at Freedom South Riding Loudoun last two seasons (2015-216). Prior to that he was an assistant coach for nine years at Chantilly. - defensive coordinator in 2014. Freedom SR was 4-6, 4-6 in his two years. Doesn't sound that good but it was a heck of a lot better than the previous number of seasons.

I'm hearing Curry to Chantilly. 4-6 is good for that school. They had a few winless years recently so that's a huge improvement. Curry was a player favorite during his time at Chantilly. He'll definitely get the players out and keep them out.

I'm hearing Edison is down to 2 finalist. Chad Lewis and a coach from Florida.i expect Lewis to get that job.

All I know is that this is the first time in a very long time, almost 10+ years that Westfield has elite talent that could potentially play in the pros. Seen this kid play, he'll break all the records that Rehman Johnson set this year next season. I can just imagine how scary he will be when he's a junior and senior. I can realistically see Westfield winning 5 in a row, counting these last 2.

Clearly your Still on-high from the back to back buzz. While this young QB has shown the Ability to throw the Ball at youth Level, he has Done absolutely nothing at the HS Level. Those are Bold Predictions Breaking Records and Winning 5 in a Row.

Westfield loses a tremendous amount of Talent, especially at the receiving corp, Westfield will not have 3- 6'-3" targets next year, and as of now zero in the running game. the offensive line loses 3 starters as well.

Before He Goes Breaking any Records, how about he gets his first Varsity Win and makes it through a season healthy with 200-250lb. defenders smashing Him, then we will entertain your Bold Predictions.

As well, how many times did the Westfield JV score more than 14 points last year?

Look out for the Eli Kid #2, Freshmen QB who actually demonstrated the ability to Pass, Run, and make Plays against his Peers, hype is hype, actually having success on the Field is another thing, look no further than Westfields vaunted Freshmen Running back 2 years ago, how was his performance as a Sophmore?

When doesn't Westfield lose a lot of talent? Backups on the 2015-2016 team ended up being stars on the 2016-2017 team and ended up receiving first team all district and in one case all state honors. The running game last year was bad due to the pass game being non existent until week 7, injuries to RBs, too many changes on the O-Line. Westfield JVs struggles can't be blamed on Kim, he was only allowed to play 2 quarters every game due to some restriction, additionally, due to lack of depth on Varsity there were a lot of sophomores on Varsity which was a part of the reason JV struggled. Watch the tape, Kim dominated opponents. The running backs struggles were explained earlier in my post. Obviously nothing is guaranteed but there is tons of potential.

This is true which partly negates your point about reloading. Upcoming Westfield senior class is pretty thin. I would not forecast a three-peat.

How long has DJ Khaled been coaching at Falls Church. Also, Edison is crazy if they hire Chad Lewis. He has nothing but a losing career, a player died during his first year coaching and a player's hands were scalded on a hot field. Lewis is a tool and has never been successful anywhere he has been.

I'm not sold on the kid myself but let's be fair. His performance was not a "disaster." I watched the game in ESPN3 and he did OK. Was 4-5, for 46 yards and 1 TD. Ran 5 times for 37 yards and 1 TD.

Then you should've noticed that they rotated 3-QB' & the team scored on his every possession. How much more efficient can you get? Who else is better?

They lost a lot of talent on both sides of the ball and the o-line won't nearly be as strong. Look for bounce back year 2018.

Looks like the Westfield trolls have already began this year lol. Anyway, for those of you who are curious, here's his tape:

http://www.hudl.com/v/1CP91T

He's been dominant right through all the youth leagues, and had a good performance in the Ontario game. Westfield graduated their top two WRs last year and were fine this year. Their tight end will probably dominate most teams, and Noah Kim should be able to get most players with his feet. Secondary brings back all but one player. Linebackers lose Petrillo and one other. D-Line is probably gonna be a set back but Cockrill might play full time this year so who knows. RBs will be better, QB will be good, receivers won't be as good but will be decent, the O-Line will be big again. And most importantly, competition will once again go down.

It bothers me that people assume that teams like South Lakes, who have been historically bad, can replace players like Funaki and Kroll, but don't believe that Westfield, one of the best and deepest programs in the state, can replace their own stars. Ridiculous. It might not be a cake walk but I'd take Westfield over South Lakes any day of the year. For all those cocky South Lakes fans, enjoy your last year of success before you guys fall off again.

It's not terribly difficult to get on one of those All-Star teams. You need to be registered in a database through Rivals, Maxpreps, etc. Then when you, along with hundreds to thousands of kids across the country, receive the invite letter reply immediately. After that you just need to be one of the first to pony up the money to play.

Not sure how well the kid will do, the above WF Fan is most probably his father, youth coach, or friend. Truth is if that video and those stats for him are against international competition, then that might actually diminish both. Let’s face it, 14-15 year old kids from abroad, where soccer is the national sport, aren't the same as our homegrown talent.

Let's face it, since Simmons has been the head coach he's lost some talent every season. But the program seems to reload and either get to or the door step of the state championship. There’s really no better program at putting kids in the place where they fit in best for the program then coaching them up. They'll be fine, but let's not mince words, the overall level of talent everywhere in the region seems to diminish ever so slightly year after year.

One last item, contrary to the poster above, Simmons has had a few special players, maybe not NFL caliber, but D1 level for sure. Some have gone on to play in college, not all football. But it's completely asinine to think any kid coming from youth ball should be mentioned in the same sentence as the NFL, UNTIL he shows it at the high school level. By what I've seen in regard to competition at the position he'll definitely get the chance this year, until then let's temper the hype.

Takes more than just buying your way in to play in that game, first you qualify at regional tryouts, over 50 kids from DMV sign up just at QB position alone, then you get invited to play at Canton on the development team top 12 qbs make that, then you get Invited to International game top 3 qbs invited so quite a process.

Agreed also last I checked football is a team sport not 1 vs 11. You're only as good as your lines.

Stick around. You will eventually see discussions about other schools. Westfield gets the most attention from both fans and haters because of the success of the program.

I wish there was more discussion of other schools but it seems not happen unless they are having a good year and then suddenly all their rivals come on here and bash them. I like seeing that because then not everyone is attacking Westfield posters.

There was a lot of buzz about South Lakes, Hayfield, Madison, Lake Braddock, South County and Centreville last year. But yeah, in the end there's consistently more volume about Westfield.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Plenty of teams, good teams in the area, WHS talked about because they're a solid program. One that most would aspire to become and with that comes all the hatred.

School opened in 2000 I believe, 174-38 record over that span. They've had one losing season back in 2001. have made post season appearances last 15 consecutive seasons. Won 10 or 11 Conference/District titles, 4 Regional titles, & 4 State 6A titles. Last two years back to back state championships. They have played in either the state or state semi-final the last 4 consecutive seasons as well.

So yeah, they get a great deal of hype, probably most of it deserved. As with the recent discussion on the potential starting QB next season, not so much....

South Lakes had mostly underclassmen playing this year but they did have a number of good seniors e.g. Jackson, Funaki, Lubreski, May, Kroll. Do they really have enough depth to replace guys like this?
