Fresh off an unopposed reelection win, Representative Gerry Connolly (D-VA) is challenging his close friend Nancy Pelosi for the House Minority Leader role.

Connolly met privately on Tuesday with several influential members of the Democratic caucus to try to determine whether he has the support to challenge Pelosi, who has been his mentor as Connolly rose through the ranks of the House.

After the surprise Presidential win by Donald Trump, coupled with disappointing results in House elections, the rank-and-file Democrats are clamoring for a change in leadership.

Connolly, with solid funding and no opposition, appears to be in a good position to take on the role.

Also yesterday, Pelosi reluctantly agreed to postpone leadership elections scheduled for Thursday. Democrats will now vote for their leaders on Wednesday, Nov. 30.

But the next two weeks will now be a debate about the California Democrat’s future. After 14 years of Pelosi’s rule, some Democrats are asking whether it’s time for someone else.

“It’s a big deal because I think our leadership started out today thinking it was business as usual,” said Rep. Marcia Fudge (D-Ohio). “And I think that probably not just our leadership but many people in our caucus were surprised at the level of discontent in our caucus.”

If Minority Whip Steny Hoyer from Maryland supports Connolly then it's a done deal. Maryland and Virginia stand to be among the biggest losers over the next four years, and having a California Democrat running the show is not what we need right now.

Connolly would be a fool to announce this publicly before he had enough votes to win it. Would not be the first time something showed up here before it made the news. Could be from someone who doesn't want it to happen but has to stay anonymous.

It could be fun to watch it play out behind those infamous closed doors.

A desperate and beleaguered Rep. Nancy Pelosi formally announced Wednesday she is running to retain her spot as House minority leader and sent a warning shot to two potential rivals by informing her colleagues that she has already locked up “the support of more than two-thirds” of the Democratic caucus.

Mrs. Pelosi has led the caucus since 2003, but the results of the election last week convinced the caucus to delay a scheduled vote this week on leadership posts until Nov. 30, with members saying they want more time to digest the shellacking the party took.

Democrats have lost 63 House seats during her tenure atop the Democratic party alongside President Obama and Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada.

Rep. Gerry Connolly of Virginia has been in talks with the caucus leadership regarding mounting a bid to unseat Pelosi.

Rep. Tim Ryan of Ohio, meanwhile, has emerged as a second potential challenger and has warned that the party has lost touch with working-class voters in the Rust Belt and Midwest that it will need to recapture a House majority.

Mrs. Pelosi, though, made it clear in a letter to her colleagues Wednesday that she does not plan on giving up her post.

“It is with both humility and confidence that I write to request your support for House Democratic Leader,” the 76-year-old wrote to her colleagues. “As of this writing, I am pleased to report the support of more than two-thirds of the Caucus.”

Democrats were optimistic early on in the 2016 race about their chances of flipping control of the 30 seats they needed to retake control of the House.
But they ended up netting five seats, falling well short of expectations, and generating some rumblings among rank-and-file members that it could be time for some new leadership in the House.

Mrs. Pelosi has said the results of the election spoke more to the presidential race than to her failure as leader to deliver more wins in the House races, and struck an optimistic note Wednesday.

“In the days since the election, I have been deeply grateful for the insights Members have shared with me,” she wrote. We have all been deeply moved by the stories and concerns of our constituents. They elected us to fight for their jobs, families and futures. We have and we will!”

I say keep her. She's been doing a bang-up job for Republicans since the 2010 mid-terms.

Nancy Pelosi is the gift that keeps on giving.

Hell, by 2018, Republicans will hold about 40 Governorships, and about 64 Senators. We'll have about 300 House members

Please, Democrats, keep Schumer, Reid, Pelosi, Waters, and all the other lame Democrats speaking. Keep talking. Let all America hear the words coming out of your mouths.

I hope Obama stays around in Washington after 2016, and keeps on talking.

I hope Debbie Wasserman-Schultz gets the microphone.

And, I can't wait to hear from Anthony Weiner or his wife, and father of his son, Huma Abedin.

Yeah, that moron Connolly as House Minority Lead is just what Democrats need up against the Trump administration and the House/Senate Repub majorities. If they're smart, they'll elect someone like Webb (not Webb since he's not a Representative) to be a normal face of the Party and get themselves back a little credibility before the mid-terms.

What am I saying? They'll elect Ellison if they don't make him DNC Chair and just fall further behind. Given their behavior over the last month, learning from mistakes is not a strong skill.

Connolly cannot win with Tim Ryan in the race. It's a secret ballot and Ryan has received some terrific press over the last few days.

According to news reports, Pelosi is staying.

Boy, we gotta encourage that!

That meeting Gerry had with the old people who are now all hanging on to their leadership positions is going to cost him. Connolly came across as way too ambitious - almost threatening.

He will never be more than a loyal pawn in the House.

Connolly still has his role as Chief Fudgepacker, so it's not like he's lost all his influence.
