HS Hoops Northern Region

I know football playoffs are about to start, but basketball season gets under way this week. Who are the teams to beat and players to watch in the Northern region this year?

I don't know, this info seemed pretty good. Disagree with some of the rankings and not in the know to verify all of it, but haven't really seen anything else yet.

Can't wait for basketball season, but football is king round here...

Thanks for the link, information looks pretty good. I also disagree with some of the rankings, pretty shocked that Woodson wasn't on the list, meanwhile their Patriot District counterparts South County, Lake Braddock and Annandale all were. Woodson probably better then all those schools. Madison should also be solid. Could care less about the private schools.

Interesting. Also thanks for the link.

I know they lost everyone - literally all 5 starters - but I think Westfield could challenge for the Conference 5 title.

So sad. McLean was final four in the region a few years ago but now they are coached by a total imbecile and they lose to freakin TJ by 20. They should just forfeit the rest of their games or ask to be reassigned to a house league.

Great game tonight in Arlington - Battlefield at Wakefield. Not Fairfax County, obviously, but relevant to the Northern Region at large. Great 5A vs. 6A clash.

Who ya got?? and a week into the season, who has impressed?

Cause they bring back zero starters, and only 2 contributors.

They did get the Bishop O'Connell transfer so we'll see if he can keep them competitive.

Westfield will probably be dangerous by the end of the year, but they just lack the experience to do anything too much.

They lost to an okay Lake Braddock team tonight in their opener.

I love those novahoops rankings, but I wonder if Wakefield/Potomac are really better than the private schools. Plus yeah, the site admits they blew it with Woodson. Cavs look really, really good. West Po and them in that district...wow.

-Chantilly goes to West Potomac tonight, good early season test to see what Chantilly is about this season.

-Scanlon put up 15pts and 9 rebounds against NC State last weekend, not bad.

-Saw McLean play the other night. They seem well coached, just don't have the height or athletes to get easy points, they have to work really hard for every basket they get. Overall they seem like really smart basketball players, but a 10 point deficit for them is huge. That said, no idea how they lost to TJ by 20 unless they were missing some players.

This is definitely the best Chantilly team since the Manning days...by far. Smith has a seasoned squad w/great balance. Not reliant on one our two players like they have been many years. If they stay healthy, I think they win the district and make a run at the region.

I have only see TJ randomly in spring and summer leagues. It does surprise me that they beat McLean by more than Cville and OHS beat McLean.

Nothing. They've played a couple of good teams and I think they had a bunch suspended from their opener against TCW because of the fight they got into with Stuart last year.

They'll be fine. Typical Edison team. Athletic, up-tempo, probably finish second or third in the Capitol behind Wakefield and maybe Marshall.

No doubt whatsoever that Chantilly has the potential to make a nice run in the State Tournament this season.

Maybe more the question should be what has happened with the Edison girls team? They're 0-6 after tonight. That's awful- worst start in years. I know they lost Graves but who else?

Edison has lost the wave of kids that pupil place there and do not live in the boundaries. Separate from Miller, the other Edison players all play for local hack club teams. The Cardinal crew has graduated and most are playing in college.

T.C. Williams is the newest hot bed for sketchy transfers, having kids from Woodbridge and PG County. Many also played club ball together under the current coach.

T.C. to states this year, only to have to forfeit wins later on when caught.

The reason that McLean doesn't have the height or athletes is that the players with those attributes quit or transfer rather than play under O'Brien. They had a 10-5 freshman last year, but see how many of those kids stick around.

Who are the favorites now that conference play has started - still West Potomac and Woodson?

Chantilly looking good again after a bit of a bump, has OHS tonight. Westfield vs. Cville - neither going anywhere this year, but strong foundation being built for 18 and 19.

The boys side looks week this year. No dominate team. Hayfield, WestPo, and maybe Woodson. Marshall should be dominating with all their height.

The girls side looks more promising. Chantilly, Herndon, Oakton, Langley and TC Williams.

Wakefield is better than Marshall in the small school region 5A (which Marshall really ought not to be playing in any longer).

And the McLean freshmen are 14-1 this year and could go 15-1. Yet the varsity has won five games over the past three years with that klutz O'Brien as their coach.

Miller needs to dump O'Brien as soon as possible; otherwise, the talented freshmen and sophomores will bail on the program just like the top juniors and seniors did.

Westfield Freshamn squad went 15-2 (won their district) and could've gone undefeated if their best player hadn't missed two games, 1st game because he was on varsity football team and they were busy winning states (again) 2nd game he missed cuz he was playing in the International Bowl for USA Football vs Team Ontario (who they crushed 63-0.

So I guess not only is this kid going to be an NFL QB someday but he'll have the ability to also be an NBA star.

Wow, another Bo Jackson, Deon Sanders, etc..

Not his dad, I am travel bball coach, my kid played against him and goes to school with him, just stating facts never claimed he was going pro, he's just a really good hard nosed competitive kid who's talented.

I saw him also this season. I was surprised he was on the Freshmen team. Figured he would have been moved up to JV.

Combined record of McLean freshmen last two years: 25-7, including 15-1 this year.

Combined wins of varsity coach Mike O'Brien over past three years: 5

Time for him to get the boot and for AD to hire a new coach.

I know nothing about McLean varsity which is why I ask, but what about the freshmen record the prior 2 years? The freshmen this year are next year's JV and last year are this year's JV. Could it be that McLean had a talent gap for the classes that now make up Varsity?

Many upsets in conference championships play.

Hayfield boys lose to Madison. Such a disappointment. Bad coaching. He has a talented team. Who says "white men can't jump"?

Edison Boys loses to the Geek Squad(Thomas Jefferson)

McLean has good talent coming through. Freshman were 15-1. Maybe that coach should take over varsity. His bio says he went to McLsan and played there a long time ago and was a Chantilly off-season coach for many years. Not a bad pedigeee for a McLean coach to get

Payne (freshman coach) would be good or they could try to get Jerry Lin, who runs the NoVa AAU program and has been an assistant at Marshall and Fairfax. O'Brien needs to go now before the talent in the last two classes transfers. Otherwise bet on a big exodus of kids to Marshall by April.

No surprise. Kevin Roller at Madison led McLean to a 24-4 record a few years ago. He knows how to coach.

Payne has two years of high school coaching experience with 2 good freshmen teams. Freshmen and varsity are a whole different animal and I can't see McLean hiring someone without varsity experience IF something were to happen to O'Brien. It's disrespectful to assume he'll be let go as there is some talent coming up.

>No surprise. Kevin Roller at Madison led McLean to a 24-4 record a few years ago. He >knows how to coach.

I think Roller is one of the best coaches in the region hands down. To compare that McLean team to the current ones is unfair though. He has a very special senior class that year that racked up wins for a few years. I think he got out when he saw what was coming up and snagged a job with more annual talent.

You don't know what you're talking about here. The upcoming talent at McLean (last 3 freshmen squads were a combined 32-17, and last 2 were 25-7) won't stick around to play under O'Brien. They'll move/transfer (example: Nate Kanuit to Yorktown) or quit (Kaleb Stander, Alex Franco) rather than play under a coach who has totally sucked as a varsity boys coach, and whose crowning achievement was heading a girls team that came in second one year when they had the best player in the district.

If O'Brien wanted respect, he had an opportunity for four years to earn it. Now he needs to get out of the way.

Also, I just checked re "annual talent." Last 3 freshmen teams at McLean were a combined 32-16 (not 32-17) and last 3 at Madison were 29-18.

Sad for the Highlanders to compare what Roller will do will that compared to what O'Brien will accomplish if left in charge of his floundering program.

Anyone who looks at the success of a freshman team and tries to project it to the varsity level is an idiot, whether talking about boys or girls. Players who can't make it to the JV level as a freshman are not going to contribute much, if anything, at the varsity level. Look at past history at any school.

He took Madison to the title this year, and McLean to the regional semifinals a few years ago, so he knows how to get smaller 6A schools to win.

Craig, on the other hand, looks like he's spent all his spare change buying Twinkies at the Dunder Mifflin vending machine.

Either way, Woodson's inabiity to handle Madison's press was painful to watch. They only stayed in the game because the refs handed out a technical to Madison to keep it close and they had one decent outside shooter.

Does anybody know how playoffs will work next year? Statewide there will be four regions. Because the VHSL in all its genius did not match the conferences for the regions (Stuart and Marshall) are 6A teams in a majority 5A conference, the conferences cannot flow into the regions and so conference tournaments are pretty much out.

This year, a team would play 8-10 games to win a state championship.

Next year, the state tournament will take two teams from each region. If the region tournament started with 16 teams, this would cut down the state championship to the 7th game. It might be interesting to have a full region tournament (like they do conference now) and have your bottom teams play play-in games.

But the question is, how do you determine seeding for a region tournament that isn't seeded by conference and the region isn't round-robin?

Region C (18)
District 3 (5)
-Annandale
-Hayfield
-Mount Vernon
-West Potomac
-TC Williams

District 4 (6)
-Fairfax
-Lake Braddock
-Robinson
-South County
-West Springfield
-Woodson

Eastern District (7)
-Colgan
-Forest Park
-Freedom
-Gar-Field
-Hylton
-Potomac
-Woodbridge

Also:
-Stuart

Region D
District 1 (5)
-Centreville
-Chantilly
-Madison
-Oakton
-Westfield

District 2 (6)
-Herndon
-Langley
-McLean
-South Lakes
-Washington-Lee
-Yorktown

Western District (5)
-Battlefield
-Stonewall
-Osbourn
-Osbourn Park
-Patriot

Also:
-Marshall

Bahaha, Madison so good they didn't even score in the fourth quarter and blew a 13 point lead to a bottom seed. Maybe next year...
