Pictures of Fair Oaks Sears - Sad
Posted by: Fairfax Bob ()

Was at the Fair Oaks Sears today. They are moving everything to the first level. This is the current sad state of the second level. I don't think Sears will be around much longer. Any Sears.
Sad how far it's fallen, but you either evolve or become extinct. Sears was still living in the 80's/90's and couldn't compete with Walmart, Target, Kohl's, etc.

Looking to the right when you go in the upper mall entrance. Fitness equipment used to be here (obviously)

Looking to the left and left-center when you go in the mall second level entrance. TV's and appliances used to be here.

Appliances used to be here

Housewares used to be on the right, mattresses and tools farther back on the right.

Mattresses used to be here on the carpeted part. Normally this time of year their whole Christmas section would be set up in the background.

What is a Fair Oaks, or a Sears for that matter?

Do they have an app or a Facebook page?

Sears just consolidated their store into the lower level. To save money and hopefully to survive. Remains to be seen.

The upper floor, now cleared out, is set to become a Dave and Busters.

After SEARS Home Services screwed me over on installing my HVAC system in my home using a bad subcontractor, then washed their hands of any responsibility, I vowed to NEVER do business with them again.

While I doubt my small purchases add up over the course of the year, it's been 15 years now, and I have probably spent over $100,000 on home goods, electronics, and tools, which NONE were bought at SEARS or any of their subsidiaries or companies. Effff-them.

Sears has been charging too much for low quality goods for years. It takes for ever to check out. My husband use to like the price/selection on tools but we have up going there because it took forever to check out.

Wow, Do you work for Sears, perhaps?

Not my job to inspect their work, and when it took over a dozen visits to get the machine/equipment close to "right", I'd say a final inspection from the homeowner would not have helped. The sub contractor effed-up, and Sears would not own up to it.

You know, I never wished ill-will on Sears, but am sure delighted to read of the present woes.

I heard Dave and busters- not just in this thread.

Makes sense- there is one in Springfield "town center" and it is doing quite well- we need one on this side of the county it is on the other side of the Ffx County parkway so makes sense to put one at Fair oaks!

I doubt they would put an actual grocery store in that space- and even if they did they would try to get a whole foods/harris teeter/wegmans class

Sorry H mart is a nice store for what it's worth- but it is simply not an "upper class" store. H mart is like the "shoppers food" of international markets- good basic food for a decent price. They would put a Giant there before they would put an H mart- just saying!!

At least Fair Oaks Mall management has immediate plans to repurpose the space as with other vacancies over the years (only small percentage of their space is empty at any given time), unlike Landmark and Springfield some time in past years. Dave & Busters good given my visits to them in other states. Fair Oaks still my go to mall right off I66, US50, Fairfax County Parkway, inside in colder weather, vs. Fairfax Corner or Reston Town Center which later one by the way plans to charge nominally for parking starting in January at my last check. Tysons Corner 1 is wall too spread too spread out, unless really need the walking exercise and have time to do it, and the Galleria is too expensive for my needs and tastes.

The only profitable parts of Sears-Kmart are Kenmore, Diehard and Craftsman. Lots of talk about what is to become of those brands which we call "KDC". Sears/A&E is the largest in home service company in the US and Canada and most of us think that it will be bought out by someone in the coming years.
For some reason Sears is still quite popular with old people and black people. As the older customers die off things do not look good for Sears retail. I'm sure the name Sears will be around for quite some time but the Sears I grew up with is already dead.
Heck, the Montgomery Wards name is still doing business but it has nothing to do with the Wards of decades past.

What killed Sears was poor service.

In the 1950's thru the early 1980's when you walked into a Sears Store there were sales people there to help you, and there were only check out lines at Christmas.

They just don't give a shit about their customers, so they won't survive much longer.

Funny though that Walmart is the leading retailer in the US yet they have the shittiest customer service in all of retail. I have heard however that Walmart is making most of it's profits off grocery sales.

i don't know about Walmart's customer service, because all I do is pick stuff off the shelves. At Sears I bought bigger stuff where you needed good, honest customer service - car repairs, tools, furniture, big electronics, other appliances. In about 1984 I was shamelessly ripped off by the Sears car repair shop at fair oaks. That was the last day Sears got a penny from me.

Screw these American stores like Sears and the people they employed. Employment makes the cost of goods too damn expensive.

What we need is more online stores where we can order cheap, Chinese made goods directly from the cargo ships at the docks with no labor costs at all. If it doesn't work just throw it away and buy another.

We should turn the old Sears space into some Section 8 housing. Think about how many people could be jammed into that space.

Wow this is sad. Back in the 1971 when I was 13, I purchased my first socket set and other tools at the Sears in Arlington. Tools were in the basement and they had a snack bar with Craftsman Chilli Dogs, Lifetime Guaranteed. I still all of the tools I bought at Sears. All SAE, Metric were just starting to shop up slowly. I went on to buy a number of tool boxes and an air compressor before then end of the decade. That Sears has been LONG gone in Clarendon.

Dave & Busters?? An adult Chuckie Cheese, who really goes there? FCPS would ship busloads of Seniors off during lower class testing, otherwise not sure who has time to waste tons of money for sub part junk prizes.

We lived a short distance from the Clarendon Sears. My first bike, stereo, most of my tools, all from there. But it was good quality at reasonable prices. The service was excellent. My family did a lot of business with them on everything for many years. As Sears became about the money, and lost their standards, it all started to go down hill. In the late 70s and into the 80s, they were caught in a massive fraud scheme in California doing fraudulent repairs on cars. Then here they allowed Warner hvac to commit fraud in the appliance repairs done in their name on 20/20. A&E now is the repair service. NTW was purchased and is theirs too. Kmart owns Sears for about 10 years now. They are second rate and have dragged them down even further. I gave up on craftsman years ago and switched to Kobalt. My company has black listed Kmart and ergo Sears for service work to their stores because they routinely don't pay the last 20% of the contracted jobs. The manager's as a whole are assholes who make completing night work very difficult at best. Sears is not going to be here mich longer. They can't maintain proper relationships with anyone. RIP

I always took my dates to my house for a movie and a dinner cooked by my date.

Then I spent the cash I saved on travel and motorcycles.

Space will not just be Dave and Busters. While Dave and Busters is indeed going into the space, so will additional stores and restaurants.

From Seritage Growth Properties:

Fairfax, VA. The Company has exercised its recapture right for portions of the full-line Sears store and Sears Auto Center located at Fair Oaks Mall, a dominant regional mall with strong demographics in the Washington, D.C. market. The redevelopment will include Dave & Busters, junior box retailers, and restaurants on the second floor, while Sears Holdings will retain the space on the first floor.

My Mom worked at Fair Oaks right when it first opened. I remember that Aquarium store that was around at least for a few years. I also remember when they used to do big Lego displays on pedestals in the middle of the fountains.

Sears was really the Amazon of its day. The only basic difference was the paper catalog vs. on-line. If Sears had just retained some corporate knowledge of their own history and roots, they could have BEEN Amazon as the Internet became ubiquitous.

They just sold off Craftsman, so the end is near, or at least a turning point.

it's just like i said. Sears used to have anything a family *really* needed to get along, a little healthy entertainment

Sears had THE TOP catalog for people to get whatever else it was they needed - and could pick it up at the store

--------------------------------

todays mall shoppers: obama foreigners with kids about the age of obama, 8yr or less - who aren't there for tools because they get those off the job site

they don't need housing goods because they live in communist run complexes where a leader selects who will do maintenance for the area

-----------------------

SEARS dropped the ball on internet / mail ordering - lost those customers - by hiring bad IT people who made a hard to shop site, very slow to shop on - very very slow

so what's left ? selling indonesian shirts and socks to high density housing people in the area ? a few plates or an iron now and then ?

it's pretty obvious: one by one Sears ignored their original mission, and then also replaced that mission with a goal that was bound to not work in (NVA / democrat ruled areas)

When they quit selling TOUGH SKIN jeans was the beginning of the end for SEARS.

Those jeans were tough I think they had Kevilar in the knees, I think most high speed motorcycle racers wore them incase they hit the deck on the race track.

The real reason they were called Tough Skins is you had to be tough to wear them in school because of the screwed up colors they came in Sears had the foresight to know that kids wearing them would have to fight everyday at school when the other kids made fun of them, so the made them with the bullet proof knee pads.

Only only go to sears for tools. Over the last few years they've gone away from quality "Craftsman" lifetime guarantee stuff to really gimmicky shit and lower end non-warranty crap tools.

I think I'll switch to Husky as I'd rather deal with the depot than sears.

You think Fair Oaks is bad, just step into Manassas Mall sometime. You have an eclectic mix of MS13, Paki camel jockeys, plain old rednecks, and gang banger nogs. That place is ripe for a shoot out.

you got that right… They were good pants but the colors made you look like a complete dork. You could get them in canary yellow, maroon, Kelly green etc. I think I was able to keep my mom in a sane place and she just got me black blue and brown.

This article states that Sears is downsizing in number of departments across the country and the extra space is being converted into alternative anchors like movie theaters, restaurants like Dave and Busters and activity places such as skyzone trampoline entertainment centers and gym clubs.

Why don't the stockholders of Sears wise up, declare enough is enough and somehow get rid of Edward Lampert the CEO? They need to do this NOW! He is managing Sears and Kmart into the ground. Lampert should be replaced by someone more competent.

Correct about the golf course but Pender vet was a church. One memory of the mall years ago was the year round Xmas store. I think it lasted only 2 years. We have seen Hechts and Mastercraft furniture go away, now Sears. Is Pennedy's next?
