REI just took the plunge and opened a brand new store in DC but is it really worth it for a big store to open in DC where soon they will have to pay DC hoodrats $15 an hour?

Is it even worth it to open a big store in DC with $15 an hour just around the corner?

REI isn't cheap and people in D.C have money to spend, they will do fine.

Average REI sales/service people start at $11-12 per hour, and most are part time. But, acceptance is very competitive and based a lot on what you have done outdoors. It's not unusual to encounter staff who hiked the entire Appalachian trail, climbed peaks in Peru, biked Europe, etc.

Managers earn $75-80K full time, plus bonuses.

Benefits, even for part-timers with 20+ hours, include Vendor ProDeals, 401k Retirement Plan with Profit Sharing Contributions, Yearly Performance-Based Cash Bonuses.

Health Insurance available for part-time employees.

Employee discount on REI branded items is 50%.

How long before a crowd of 20 to 30 of DC's finest rush in, grab anything they can carry and rush out?

High-capacity, assault shoplifting.

I'll enjoy the video.

I have shopped at the Patagonia and North Face stores in DC and never saw anything like that. I never saw anyone like you, either.

There is nothing at REI that any of DC's finest will want to steal, because they can't use it nor sell it for quick cash. If they had shelves full of Newports and 40's, they'd be in trouble, but instead they sell expensive outdoor gear, which is worth exactly fuck-all to your average inner city dweller.

It's not even worth knocking over the register for, because most of their sales are credit card transactions. No one's buying a couple grand worth of camping gear with cash.

"There is nothing at REI that any of DC's finest will want to steal"

Do you not understand? They steal to steal. They do not steal to profit. It is all about the monkey mentality game to THEM. And there is plenty of shit in an REI that THEY can use/and or sell if they choose to do so.

REI used to be good but it's turned into a way too expensive poser shop.

Anything that you can get there you can get better for less elsewhere. 90% of their 'gear' will never see anything other than a suburban neighborhood.

Their business model has kept them around longer than they should have been but the Interwebs will claim another victim eventually.

REI is a liberal owned company that pay like $20 hr and gives full insurance benefits better than Obamacare.

They'll do fine in the DC location. That's the area where DC is being rebuilt and all the yuppies are buying million dollar condos next to Nationals Park.

They have already hit the DC North Face store.

Where we you at?

$11-$12 an hour and $15 an hour is a huge difference.

You must suck at math.

Meanwhile they have announced the closing of their College Park store, which has been there for 30 years.

Even if they have to charge a little more the stupid millennial yuppies will flock to the DC REI.

Still cheaper than renting a zipcar and driving out to the suburbs.

I hope they carry trail razors so those girly boys can shave their legs when in the great outdoors.
