Three Fairfax County elementary school students were injured, two of them critically, Thursday morning when they were struck by an SUV with a blue H bumper sticker while preparing to board their school bus.
It was reported that the children were struck around 8 a.m. as they stood near the school bus, which was stopped with its lights on at an intersection. The driver of the SUV did not realize the bus was stopping and, in an effort to avoid striking the bus, swerved and struck the children.
"Apparently, he didn't see the children," said an official with Fairfax County Public Schools who wished to remain anonymous as she was not authorized to talk about the incident. "Obviously, a bad decision, and it's a very bad situation that's happened. Our prayers are with these children that they recover, that's the main thing."
No children were on the bus at the time of the crash. The driver of the SUV was taken to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
The driver will be charged with failure to have insurance and registration on the vehicle while his immigration status is checked out. The crash remains under investigation.
