Where to get a good salad
Posted by: Dotty ()

Where should I go to find a restaurant with really good salads in West Springfield? Doesn't have to be just a salad place, but anywhere that serves good food and really good salads. Thanks.

sorry for my above post, clearly you are not a rabbit.
a more appropriate question to ask would be, what qualifies as a "good" salad?

In all seriousness, unless you're going for a specialty salad, what's the difference other than dressing? Lettuce is lettuce, tomatoes are tomatoes, onions are onions, etc.

EDIT (addition): I like salads, so I eat a lot of those when I go out for dinner or lunch, so I'm not just making a jackass comment (like usual).

Great American Restaurants' locations have good salads. I think Mike's American Grill might be the closest to you. I think salads can vary widely - interesting ingredients, great homemade dressings and great croutons...

I think you'd like the variety and freshness at Saladworks. I don't know if there is one near you. There is on on Elden Street in Herndon. It's easy to get to but you do need to watch out for illegal immigrants running across the road.

Here is their website: http://saladworks.com/

I know this might come as a surprise to you, but you can actually make a good salad right in your own home, and really cheaply.

Go to any grocery store. Buy a head of lettuce, or if you prefer, romaine or some other fancy sort. Stay in the produce section, and select all kinds of vegetables to add to your salad -- Brocolli, onion, green pepper, tomatoes (cherry or plum or whatever), carrots, celery, bean sprouts, mushrooms, the list goes on.

You can buy a week's worth of salads for what you would pay some restaurant for one salad.

It's just plants thrown into a bowl, with some dressing. There's no magic, no restaurant is going to perfect the making of a salad.

Deliah's on Backlick Rd has the best salads in the area IMO. Milano's on Rolling Rd also has a good greek salad.

The food court at Tysons 2 has been gone for years. I don't remember a salad bar there, and think you might be referring to that Vapiano place. That's been closed for awhile too (there's still one in Ballston though)

I second the Great American Restaurants suggestion. Mikes American Grill in Springfield and Sweetwater Tavern in Merrifield both have caesar and chop house salads; my favorite in the area.

One more vote for GAR...the chopped salad is one of the best I have ever had. Not all that hard to make at home, but the dressing really completes it and I have not found any recipes which come close to the sweet and tangy dressing at Artie's.

The best tossed salads are on C Block at the Fairfax County Detention Complex. Get yours with jelly. You will not be disappointed.

This place is incredibly overpriced and hard as hell to get in and out of their parking lot. Give it another 6 mos. or less before it vanishes like Caribou Coffee

Beats me. You'd have to ask the OP from that thread. Apparently, none of the posters prior to you, 469, thought they were good enough. Sorry to waste your time. I'm a moron.

Thanks for the advice, Thurston, but I"m a fat lazy f**k and dont wanna go to the trouble of doing all that. That's how I got fat in the first place. Maybe if I can eat someone's salads I can lose some weight.

Common sense is always good. Make you own. I am always leary of eating uncooked greens in a place where you can't see what is going on in the kitchen. Did people wash their hands, are they wearing gloves, WHERE did they wash the stuff? I worked at a place once with a cafeteria that had a contract to hire the mentally impaired. About 200 people got food poisoning because somebody decided to soak the lettuce in the sink that they used to rinse out the mops. It took a long time for me to eat a salad at a restaurant and to this day I am very choosy about that.

Lotus (restaurant), in Chantilly, makes a fantastic salad. The ingredients are top notch and the dressing is addictively good. When you get a side dish clump of salad from that place, that might come with a meal, it's not the same delicious beast as getting the stand-alone salad meal, unfortunately, so you can't order a mini portion to test it.

To anyone wondering the hidden meaning of the phrase "tossed salad", that other people were referring to, just google it. I did, just to check my advice before dispensing it, and the top 3 hits all did the job.
