Depends on what you want it for. If all you want to do is tell time, go to Walmart and get a $20 Timex. If you want to impress go with Rolex or Patek Phillipe. I have never heard of Blancpain. Google them. By the way, I do have a Rolex. Know what it does better than my $20 Timex? Not a damn thing.

Vostoks are great watches for the price. A unique movement, reliable, a lot of history behind it and it's cheap.

But like all higher end watches, it's needs to be worn or be in a winder which is a pain. Quartz movements on high end watches are just dumb.

Do you NEED a watch, a fashion accessory or something that says "I spent a pile of money on a watch"? If it is the latter then go with a Rolex because how many people are going to know they should be impressed if you say "I've got a Patek Phillipe".

Are you stupid or living under a rock? Take a look around at where people work. Especially in this area, a large number of people work in SCIFs and controlled areas where phones are not allowed.

I paid $4500 for my Baume et Mercier that is less accurate than a watch from a happy meal. Why? For the beauty and engineering. Stupid? I think it's stupid to pay a gym $100 a month to lift lead up and down. I think it's stupid to pay a mechanic $600 for a job that can be done myself for $20 in parts.

There usually is a clock somewhere but not necessarily visible to everyone, and every room and meeting space in the facility doesn't always have a clock. I worked in a SCIF that had a clock with a 4 time zone display. It was always wrong or turned off because nobody knew how to set it and those who might have been able to figure it out did not have permission.

In VA, just one example, the entire area of skyline drive and roads south of the peaks of otter doesn't have a signal.

Rolex is not the only brand that appreciates, a lot of them haven't either. What was in style 30 years ago may not be in anymore. Like gold rolex watches, they haven't kept up as much as SS watches. Most all of the high end watches that are not too personalized and look good will appreciate.

Your phone gets its time from the cell node, not from some "atomic watch". And those are often off by a bit--I've seen significant drift occasionally. So don't be too sure you've got the exact time unless you do have one of those watches that use the broadcast time signal.

Mind you, if you NTP-sync frequently, you'll be close enough for most purposes. But that's neither your phone nor your watch (other than the latter, done manually).

Seriously. A good one will only set you back like $50. It'll have a stopwatch, a timer, five alarms, and set itself to the atomic clock each night. Can a gay-ass Omega watch do any of that? No.

Quartz watches such as Casio have circuit boards that eventually break and are unfixable. Mechanical watches such as Rolex and Omega can be fixed. I have a 1963 Breitling that still works. No such thing as a 50 year old digital

Citizen Chronomaster, but you'll have to go to Japan to get one (or buy from a reliable dealer online).

I'd wanted one of these for about three years after I first heard about them, and finally picked one up for about ¥150000 on a business trip in 2008, which was about $1400 at the time.

The reason I bought one is that they were and are the most accurate quartz watch available. I've used a few atomic watches, but they drift too much if they can't get a signal, and I've spent enough time in places where you either can't get a signal (or it's deliberately blocked) that it was annoying to me.

As a bonus, they have a 10 year guarantee and a 5 year battery life, and they'll even do 3 free cleanings and inspections in the first 10 years you own it.

Breitlings are absolutely high end watches. They are THE definitive watch for aviators. Astronauts and pilots have worn Breitling watches for decades. Hence they designed for functionality rather than as simply a decorative bauble coated in gold and encrusted with diamonds.

Most Breitlings use a dog shit ETA movement. The real high end watches have their own in house movements.

Citizen Chronomaster are pretty nice, grand Seikos are also really accurate and nice quartz watches.

I'm curious about the qualifications of the poster who claims Breitlings and Omega are "dog shit" and what type of testing he performed to come to this conclusion. Omega and Breitling are the two main watches worn by pilots and astronauts.

Scott Carpenter wore a Breitling aboard Aurora 7 when he became the first American in space. NASA tested a number of watches; the Omega Speedmaster was issued to all the Apollo Astronauts and is the official watch of the Russian Space Agency. Omega was the first watch on the moon, worn by Buzz Aldrin and is currently worn on the outside of space suits during space walks at the International Space Station.

Apologies to the respected anonymous poster on Fairfax Underground who thinks Breitlings and Omegas are "dog shit", but Scott Kelly actually has credentials.

April 6, 2016 — An astronaut who set a record for time in space has now signed on to represent the brand of luxury watches that helped track his 8,168 hours and 42 minutes circling the Earth.

Scott Kelly, who in March completed an almost year-long mission aboard the International Space Station – a first for a U.S. astronaut – was announced on Tuesday (April 5) as the new ambassador for Breitling, the Swiss manufacturer that made two of the timepieces he wore while in orbit.

"If you look at Scott's impressive career in space, you can't help but respect the longevity and duration of time he has spent in space," said Thierry Prissert, president of Breitling USA, in a statement.

Kelly, who retired from NASA on April 1, logged more than 340 days during his most recent space station expedition, setting a record for the longest single mission flown by an American. Totaling the time he spent on his four missions, Kelly tallied more than 520 days off the planet, more than any other NASA astronaut to date (Jeff Williams, currently aboard the station, will surpass that record in August).

A Breitling wrist chronograph is seen floating in front of a window on board the International Space Station. (Breitling)
During his almost year-long mission, Kelly wore an Omega Speedmaster chronograph issued to him by NASA, but he also brought with him two Breitling timepieces: a limited-edition wristwatch equipped with a calendar function and a bright yellow model outfitted with a dual frequency distress beacon.

"Breitling watches set the standard for how a chronograph should perform," said Kelly, "so when I volunteered for the yearlong mission, I needed to have my Navitimer 1461 and Emergency with me," Kelly said.

The Navitimer 1461 was gifted to Scott by his twin brother, Mark, who is also a former NASA astronaut.

During the March 2015 to March 2016 mission, Mark – on the ground – and Scott in space were the focus of a series of experiments as part of NASA's Twins Study.

With the newly-announced Breitling partnership, the Kellys now share something else in common.

"Being close to my brother, Mark, who is [also] a Breitling Ambassador, I have become familiar with Breitling, so I am really excited to be joining the Breitling family," Scott said.

Breitling Emergency and Navitimer 1461 Blacksteel model watches as worn by Scott Kelly on his yearlong space mission. (Breitling)
Breitling's association with astronauts extends beyond the Kellys, dating back to the fourth American in space.

In 1962, Scott Carpenter wore a Breitling Navitimer on his orbital mission aboard the Mercury space capsule "Aurora 7," making that timepiece the first wrist chronograph to be worn by a U.S. astronaut in space.

Back on Earth, Carpenter's fellow Mercury astronaut Wally Schirra and moonwalker Buzz Aldrin also sported Breitling watches as personal timepieces after they left NASA.

Scott Kelly said that it was the quality and precision of the watches that drew him to wear and partner with Breitling.

"As the commander of a mission to the International Space Station, I rel[ied] heavily upon my instruments to perform in pressure-packed circumstances," Kelly said. "Their tireless effort to be at the cutting-edge of chronograph production is pretty remarkable."

I AM a military pilot. The only reason I have a $3000 Omega X-33 is they "gave" it me for $600. Granted it's now 15 years old and still going, but it's been back to the shop 4 times, $350 in repair bills, and lots has gone wrong with it like the buttons popping off!

There's no "magic" watch aviators wear anymore- the aircraft have GPS sync'd time, so the watch is a status symbol. Having Zulu time is nice for flight plans and weather forecasts. Most aviators I know wear a $30 plastic POS.

I wear an apple watch when not at "work".

You can't beat a Casio G-shock or Timex ironman for accuracy, toughness, and cost

Citizen is a great watch for the money.

If you need a cheap mechanical with swiss movement- hamilton, oris, etc.

If money was no object, I'd have an IWC.

Correction? You just got SMOKED by none other than Chuck Hoffman...I mean...that's worse than being beaten up by a girl.

John Glenn was the first American to orbit. Carpenter was the SECOND American to orbit and the 4th in space. Alan Shepard was the first American in space, but he just went up and came down, without fully orbiting the Earth.

Great, after you go to test pilot school, spend a few years flying high performance jets, and get selected as an astronaut, the next time you come back from the moon or a year in space perhaps your opinion might matter.

Actually, both Citizen and Seiko (same corporate family) now have watches with GPS receivers built in. The first generation only set the time, but the newer generation will first geo-locate it to determine the time zone and then set the time. I recently got one and the time to lock is surprisingly quick. They'll set the time in under 30 seconds and from a cold start seem to get it all done within 3 minutes. Strictly speaking, that would be better than stratum 0 if you're an NTP purist.

As for OP's question, it really does depend on what you want, a.k.a. the "mission profile." A dress watch probably won't have a 40+mm face and a lot of bulk.

As a pilot, I have had quite a few Citizens as they're relatively inexpensive, durable, and seem to keep good time, but there is noting like the clean lines of an IWC.

One big 'gotcha' about the investment value of a Rolex is the cost of servicing. A Rolex may very well last a lifetime but the mechanism may need periodic servicing or repairs over the years. That cost can be significant. Having your watch serviced or repaired by a qualified shop can cost several hundred dollars. A couple service or repair bills over 20-30 years can turn the net present value of a Rolex from positive to negative.

And if you are purchasing a watch for its future value, don't ever wear it. Keep it in new condition.

I have an Omega, the kind where the second hand doesn't tick, its a smooth sweep motion. Like the Rolex's. Its true, you need to service them (cleaning, lubricate) every few years. Going rate is around $300-400. Also, my 15 year old Omega needed some internal work that cost another $300 (due to rough treatment on my part). But OTOH I've never had a watch last me this long!

Totally agree!

Marketing, marketing, marketing...all this talk about Rolex's increasing in value and being a good investment is just marketing nonsense put out there by Rolex themselves to drive sales.

Do Rolex watches increase in value? Yes. Some of them. And it depends on condition.

But, let's have a frank financial discussion here...

Currently, Rolex's most expensive offering is the Daytona Platinum with Diamond Bezel, Pave Dial, Model #116576. Full retail is $120,145.

You take your $120,145 and buy that watch, never open it or wear it, and lock it away for 20 years.

I will take my $120,145 and invest it in the stock market. Even allowing for capital gains taxes, 20 years later my $120,145 worth of investments will be worth more than a pristine, now 20 year old Rolex. Hell, I could even buy a new, 2017 Porsche 911 Carrera instead, drive it around and get more re-selling it 20 years later, again even allowing for maintenance costs, than your Rolex.

Buy a Rolex, buy ANY watch to let you know what time it is and because you like the way it looks...not because you're trying to make money on the transaction.

So, not trying to pick a fight, but it having lasted you 15 years with at least $600 in service doesn't sound like a good deal in terms of function. I mean, you can buy a new Timex every year for 15 years for $600.

So I think we're back to Omega/Rolex et al. being fashion statements. Which is fine -- your money, your choice. Just don't try to sell it on reliability, unless you're going to the moon :)

Greybeard-

No your right, you really can't justify them from a cost perspective. But something I forgot to mention is some watchs (Omega included) you can get the quartz (battery) movement, vs the kind I have (automatic self winding movement). Most watches are quartz and are a) a lot cheaper and b) don't require the maintenance beyond new batteries. If you don't care than don't pay more for an automatic movement.

Watches like Omega and Rolex are more about the case/strap and how well they hold up over time (very). So not _just_ style.

Some people appreciate a nice watch and wouldn't wear a Timex.

Yeah, valid points. Back in the 1980s I had a Timex I really liked (for the functions) but the case was crap: would wear out in 6 months. OTOH, the cases were about $2 apiece. I bought a dozen of 'em, kept my watch (and my dad's, as he liked it, had the same one) going for years, until the guts finally quit. My biggest criterion for a watch is function: multiple alarms and a countdown timer, which is often hard to find these days, alas.

But if I had the bucks, some of the Breitlings sure look nice!

Hoptroff.

An honest-to-god atomic clock on your wrist.

They use a miniature atomic clock SOC originally made for nuke missiles.

They're supposed to be accurate to 1 second per millennium, although I doubt they'd last more than a few decades without serious maintenance and repair.

How do you adjust it when they add leap seconds?

I could just tell you the brand name, but the fact is that first you need to decide why you need a watch. If it's just like an accesoire, then I think you need watches from Rolex. If you plan to find a watch for sports, you can find the best fitness watch on the website . Recently, I decided to go in for sports in order to lose weight and also looked for a watch. As a result, I ordered one model that I saw on this list, and I really like this model. So I think you will find a suitable model there.

Do they sell men's clothes where you shop? Do you like gladiator movies?

I bought a Baume et Mercier Capeland SS at Lingenquist and Beckstead in 2007. Still have it. Still love it so much that no other watch has gotten me to pull the trigger. Would like a Rolex Milguass but eh..

The problem is this: If you give a quartz watch for a gift, one day it will stop functioning and the repair cost will be more than a new watch. So then the gift either gets tossed or lays in a drawer unused for ever. Now if you give an automatic it can be repaired and refurbished forever. My dad has a Breitling Aviator given to him when he got his wings at Pensacola in 1963. It is on his wrist today.

Dude, I can recommend you to research an assortment rolex. They have probably the best choice of different wristwatches. I understand that the original watches cost really to much, but I Buy Replica Rolex Watches. Nowadays, replica watches are very popular. On their website you will find exactly what you want, I promise you. And it doesn't costs to much. Think that 300 dollars for such a good quality watches is very cheap price. I already have some models and I am totally satisfied. Hope that I helped you.

Get that watch that niggers wear!
The face is about 3” in diameter.
Pose for any pictures showing off that watch.

Hi there. How much money can you spend on this purchase? It is quite important because there are so many brands and models to choose from. By the way what do you think about Apple Watch, in my opinion it is good variant. Also I recommend to read latest tech news on 4ProMedia, maybe you will like some gadget from here.

No, I want a big assed gold pimp watch like all the fly Niggers be wearing. Encrust that thing with some diamonds, rubies and other cool bling.

My vote goes for Apple watch, undoubtedly. The features and the quality of Apple watch is flawless comparing to analogues from other brands. As a little disadvantage I would notice the quality of straps, I changed original straps on leather ones from Labodet.com .

Hey, I'd recommend checking out a variety of Rolex replicas. They offer one of the widest selections of wristwatches. I know authentic ones can be quite pricey, but I opt for Replica Rolex Watches. These days, replica watches are quite in demand. Their website has exactly what you're looking for, I guarantee it. Plus, they're reasonably priced. I think $300 for such high-quality watches is a fantastic deal. I already own several models, and I'm completely satisfied.

By the way, do they offer any discounts?
