Does George Mason have fraternity houses?
Posted by: Mofo ()
Date: August 30, 2009 06:17PM

Does George Mason have a fraternity/soririty row or anything equivalent to that? And before you ask no I'm not looking for shitty parties but thinking of possibly buying real estate in Fairfax City and would like to know the layout. I know there are greek chapters at GM but don't know if they have official physical houses. (Like where I went to school with huge greek letters on the side of the building).

Thanks.

To the best of my knowledge, GMU doesn't have a traditional frat row. Frats do have houses off campus, but it's more like 5 guys in the same frat renting a house, so it becomes the defacto "house". But my knowledge stems from the mid-90's and I could be way off right now.

I believe this is correct.

There were some houses owned by fraternity chapters up till the early 90's. Kappa Sigma's house was bought by the university and torn down and something put in it's place. It was on Roberts Rd right at the end of Shenandoah River Ln.

There were also lots of student rented houses on University Drive just outside campus that were basically occupied by students from a single fraternity. Kappa Sigma also "had" two or three houses there.

Somehow the school went on a campaign to tone down the fraternities in the early 90's.

And as far as I know, none of the houses had greek letters outside.

I especially liked how they turned the unfinished basement into a dance floor, with a DJ booth and everything.

So you've probably been to the parties they held annually at the old Fairfax City Town Hall, where they had live bands and dozens of garbage cans full of jungle juice. Halloween, South Pacific, and I forget the other one.

The dance floor rocked. I get a big ole grin just thinking about it.

I stayed away from the jungle juice. :) Many, many great memories. Even though Mason was a commuter school, there were plenty of party opportunities. The Ratskeller was a fun spot too. Giving up my age, aren't I?

Forget the walk down memory lane, lets set a date night up. FU needs a new couple to gossip about. If you really wanted to get crazy, mr.mephisto or spunky are definitely down for threesome.

I don't know about the ratskeller. I didn't go to GMU but a friend from high school did and was a member of Kappa Sigma.

I went to a bunch of parties during my breaks and the year after I graduated from college while he was still finishing up at GMU.

There was one house on University that lost their lease during that whole GMU campaign to throttle the fraternities. The party they threw the night before their eviction date was crazy. At 3 am, we were doing beer slides on the kitchen floor. Someone stood at one end spraying beer from the keg onto the floor while everyone ran down the hall and slid on the kitchen floor. That house wasn't an official Kappa Sigma house, though.

I don't remember if they trashed the official house before being evicted, but I'm sure I was there and I'm sure they did. I think that was 91 or 92.

You probably know about Emmet Swimming, then, I bet.

Looks like I was hanging at those parties a few years earlier than you. I wasn't around for the eviction demolition party, but I heard about it!

Not sure if they closed the Ratskeller, but it was a bar on campus. The drinking age had just changed to 21, but most of us were grandfathered and able to drink at 18.

I see that Emmet Swimming is a band but I don't remember ever seeing them. They must have made the scene after my fun ended.

For the unofficial house, I remember it. For the official house, no recollection whatsoever.

So that must have been mid 80's. I think the last state to go to 21 was New Hampshire. I went on a school sponsored ski trip once to Killington when I had just turned 18, in 86, and was able to drink at the hotel we stayed at in New Hampshire. Pissed off all the chaperones, but there was nothing they could do, the dozen or so of us who were 18 were legally allowed to drink in NH.

They were hired to play a Kappa Sigma party, and the drummer didn't show because he was sick or something, and Tamer Eid, a Kappa Sigma brother, volunteered to play drums for them for the party. They fired their old drummer and Tamer was hired.

They went on to record something like 4 or 5 albums, the last 2 on a major label, toured the country, made a decent living for 7 or 8 years, then broke up.

Well shit, either they didn't break up, or they got back together recently. Looks like Tamer Eid is still the drummer, too. Go GMU!

The main fraternity at Mason for parties is that Pike fraternity, but everyone who joins that place is a cocky douschebag. They let the biggest wannabes into there. Lucky for them dumb white girls are easily persuaded with cheap booz.

Never call your fraternity a "frat". Would you call your country a "cunt"?

LOL pike=epic fail, I went to that house the night mason made it into the final four. Go in the house, first floor allllllllllllllllllllll dudes, so we were like fuck party must be in the basement. Go down stairs, nothing but more penis and weed smoke. After seeing that, immediatley vacated the pike house. I counted three girls in the whole house. If you enjoy a harty diet of sausage and herb, pike is the place for you.

Was wondering if anyone remembered exactly what triggered the school to shut down that Kappa Sigma house? Did they get into some kind of legal trouble around 1990?

Mason still has fraternity houses. They have like 16 frats or somehting crazy right now. The only ones that really matter are Pike, Theta Chi, Phi Sig, Sig Ep and Kappa Sig... And a majority of them are all douchey.

I just moved back to the FFx area after a long absence. I'm shocked to see that GMU is a thriving actual university now. When I was growing up in FFx, it was a four-year commuter college. That was it. I don't recall there being any campus life, frat houses, school spirit, school cultues, anything. Just a lot of parking lots and older buildings. Now, it's got an actual quad. Crazy.

Yeah, GMU is growing in leaps and bounds. The bar-none biggest push going on throughout the campus is to try and get as many students as possible interested/involved in on-campus activities and campus life. The whole "campus community" thing is promoted and marketed heavily around Fairfax. I think the whole greek thing is really an afterthought - the greek folks have to go out and actively hand out flyers and push people to consider joining them.

That's kinda wild, too, considering the fact that most universities have a pretty thriving greek system and people flock to it. Like it or hate, consider them douches or not, big old universities like UVA and Tech have a biiig frat/sorority community and people come to THEM to join, not the other way around.

George Mason University doesn't give shit about the surrounding localities on its borders like fairfax city and county they keep expanding and expanding and apparently cause of state law the city and county have little say on the continual development going on at Mason
perhaps the old apples and oranges argument but where the hell does Mason get all the money to keep building and building and yet the administration says they don't have the money for a football program
haven't a number of other CAA schools started up football in recent years

My best guess on "where does the money" come from is the volumes of Middle Eastern kids that go there...GMU had a sister school in the United Arab Emirates up until 2009 and I'm guessing there was a lot of oil-money-backed kids coming in and out of there.

Mason didn't shut the KapSig house down. House and property was bought out by a Catholic organization that built the church on that property. We purchased a bigger property later on.....

How bad did Emmit Swimming suck? Emo crap before emo. The whole Fairfax City scene in the 90's had so many crappy bands. I used to live walking distance from TTs so we used to hang there all the time, terrible music.

The Mason frat parties were OK, but not much fun if you weren't actually in the frat. There were plenty of parties thrown by us independents, back when a keg of beer from Dixie Liquor was $32. Mason was a commuter school, but for those of us on campus it was like a small school culture where you knew just about everyone.

I think there is a more important question here...

Back when CL had an adult services section, I heard a few mason girls used to get their tuition money like that.

Where do I find these chicks that were down on their luck but wanted to make something of themselves. I still want to help them achieve their dreams.

In the 80s, TKE was the frat the comes to mind. I lived on campus in the apartments, across from where they would gather. Drinking legally at 18, and being one of the last classes to legally have a keg on campus, did not help the grades. It was a blast though. Lugging our kegs up 3 flights of stairs was never any fun, but draining the keg got rather intoxicating.

A few local hangouts then were the Scoreboard, Boomerangs, and the Peppermint lounge (my favorite).
