It's a short-range wireless link that lets you do things like use a keyboard without running a wire to your computer or use one of those Star Trek-looking earpieces for your cellphone without running a wire between the two.

to date, bluetooth mostly been used in cellphones for earpaices as well as sending info to other phones. bluetooth is a problem technology because there are four, yes FOUR, different "standards" though some phones use a proprietary format for the earpeices. it was supposed to be a competitor with WiFi (like wireless networking cards for... wireless networks) but was a disaster. it's big limitation is it's lack of range because apparently people like being further than 30ft from their router (DUH!). it is also a fairly disruptive way of sending information as it acts like it's vomiting the signal in that it uses a HUGE chunk of (normally usable) radio frequencies so it's kinda broadcasting indiscriminatingly.

my advice to EVERYONE: do not use bluetooth for anything but your cellphone. it's a awful (and failed) technology that is a complete bitch trying to make work with your computer.

Harald "Blåtand" Gormsson (Blåtand means Blue tooth) was a Danish King that had a blue tooth and he united Denmark and Norway. Just like you can unite your phone to a headset. And that's how the technology got its name....
