I moved to Fairfax County in 1960, so I must be a dumbass.
While people have always complained about the cost of living here there are lots of differences between than and now.
The main one is people. Back then there were no plagues of locusts (immigrants) flooding schools and sucking up other expensive "services" which cause taxes to skyrocket. Then there's the millions of carpetbaggers from Podunk, Iowa flocking in and bidding up real estate prices and clogging traffic.
My first house cost $21,500 in 1960. It was a brand new brick single family home on a third of an acre. With inflation, that would be about $175,000 in today's money. But houses in that development go for at least $500K up to about $650K in 2016. Why is that do you think?

Half the trolls on here are posting from their mother's basement- the only way they can afford to live in Fairfax County.
With apartments starting @$1400 a month for a decent 1 bedroom- I doubt everyone here is working a job paying $25 an hour or more to afford it. They won't even look at your application these days if you make anything less than $50k.

I love my mom's basement, got my own bathroom and kitchenette down here. No rent just yardwork and snow removal. My job is at Quantico so I commute against traffic and I have shitloads of money saved. Life is good!

Blame the illegals. The landlords will keep on jacking up the rent as long as Paco and his 10 friends can afford to each pay $200 a month to the 2 bedroom apartment rent. If it goes above $2000, they will simply move in another "relative".
A single person has no chance affording an apartment on their own in fairfax county proper without paying AT LEAST $1300/month- which requires a $45k+ salary. Most singles starting out straight out of college are lucky to make $30k, while 10 illegals making minimum wage can split the rent and CAN afford it. Do the math. The landlords want the illegals in and paying since they can't afford to get evicted as it is hard for them to even get an apartment since they are illegal. They will evict a native person with the quickness if only 5 days late.
