Middle Age Career Switch

I've been in civil engineering for 20 years and I'm sick of it. Lots of work for very little pay. I feel like I should do something else but don't know what to do or how to go about

Any advice? I can always count on FFXU!

Join the mafia. If you can do the time, do the crime.

I've been doing the same thing for 29 years now with little to show for it! I, too, am considering a career change. you would think with all of the wasted government spending around here it would be easy to find something else to do for a career. It takes a college degree and special certification, I guess!

You might have been able to count on this site once upon a time...but it's been overrun by 12-year olds

Check out some career boards or think about contracting since you live in the DMV

He must be worse off than we thought if he is living in the department of motor vehicles office.

If you have your PMP certification it should be easy to get onto a government contract.

How is that even legal? Like just camp out there after the doors are locked? Usually there are at least a few guards around, there's no way they wouldn't suspect seeing the same person in there every single day. i'm surprised it wouldn't set off motion alarms at night or something, it sounds ridiculous.

I'm in the same boat. Been an insurance investigator for 25 years and just tried of the entire industry and the bullshit that goes with it.

I could easily become an agent and probably knock down $80k a year but the idea of being an agent makes me want to vomit.

I'm also considering the consultant route.

You're not giving us a lot to work with here. What do you enjoy doing?

I hate the DMV. Two and a half to three hours minimum wait. Sucks.

It depends on what you have saved up. Go into a government job and get another pension. Teach. Start a real estate appraisal business or something else related to real estate.

If you have a civil engineering background and did some mapping, you could try seeing if you could work yourself into a geospatial analyst job. The only thing with those jobs is most want you to deploy 3 or more months a rotation if it is in the mil/intel side of the Gov't.
