Save The Internet - Congress is pushing a law that would abandon the Internet's First Amendment -- a principle called Network Neutrality that prevents companies like AT&T, Verizon and Comcast from deciding which Web sites work best for you -- based on what site pays them the most. If the public doesn't speak up now, our elected officials will cave to a multi-million dollar lobbying campaign. Sign the petition and learn more at http://www.savetheinternet.com (This link maybe filtered by your internet provider Comcast, if so hand type it) George Allen (R-VA) is against this bill.

Craig from Criag's List -

Heed the threat to Internet fairness
Big telecoms would tilt the level playing field by playing favorites with those who pay.
By Craig Newmark
The Internet allows people to help one another because it is pretty much a level playing field. Its inherent culture is about giving everyone a fair shot at success.

There's a term for this attribute on the Internet: Net neutrality. In America, as on the Internet, you play fair and work hard, and you can get ahead.

However, fairness on the Net is being threatened by telecommunications giants like AT&T and Verizon. They have openly admitted that their interests are best served by getting companies - their server customers - to pay for special privileges. They want to eliminate Net neutrality and instead gain permission to charge companies for preferential treatment. Essentially they want to create a Net fast lane for a select group of companies.

Right now, if you want to do business on the Internet, you set up a server, and you're treated the same as a big company. That is, a consumer can get to your site as easily and quickly as to a big company's site.

The phone and cable companies want to change that. They want to get paid for providing basic service and then get paid even more for providing extras in addition to the basic service. They tell us to trust them, but... Remember taking a day off from work to wait for the phone or cable guy, and then he didn't show up? And remember they thought that was OK when you called to complain?

Here, thanks to a posting at BroadbandReports.com, is an illustration of how this "premium service" would work in the everyday world of telephone service:

Let's say you call Joe's Pizza (a basic service company), and the first thing you get is a message saying you'll get connected in a little while, or if you want, you can get connected now to Pizza Chain (a premium service company). That's analogous to what the telecom companies are proposing for the Internet.

Personally, I want to make clear that the people I work with at telecoms and cable companies are really good people. They are generally on the side of fairness and Net neutrality. They want to do the right thing. But not all telecom executives feel the same way, and they're spending millions in Washington on lobbyists, PR firms, and "astroturf" (anti-grassroots) sites to carry the day.

I think most people would agree that telecoms shouldn't have the ability to grant Net privileges to the people with big money or power. So let's keep the Internet as it is: neutral, fair and free. And urge your local senators to keep it that way as the Senate considers telecom legislation this fall. The Philadelphia region, and the rest of America, deserve that.

Typical George Allen, say one thing to the public then take big PAC money from companies like Comcast and Verizon and vote the opposite while nobody is looking.

Why am I not surprised that Allen is voting in favor of big business needs and screwing the VA public.

I'm confused, Lurker said that George Allen is against the bill.

My bad, Allen is against "Net neutrality" and FOR the bill to allow filtering by internet providers, such as Comcast, Verizon, Cox and etc...

Correct Allen is against "Net Neutrality"

Warner, John W. (R-VA) 202-224-2023 is undecided.
