mini fridges in every classroom FCPS
Posted by: Taxer tag loo ()
Date: September 01, 2016 09:10PM

each school in FCPS has a teacher's lounge with large refrigerators.

My child's school got an award for being a Green School. Energy efficient.

At the open house, I saw mini refridges and microwaves in several classrooms. Half of the teachers bring their own dorm-sized refridges to work.

How can a school remain "green" when there are 40 small fridges running 180 plus days a year?

Tax payers are paying the electric bills.

A lot of the FCPS staff are greedy thieves. They might be trying to protect their lunches and cold drinks.

Good point, though.

Maybe because they only have a few minutes to eat lunch and want to use the time to grade papers at the same time. It saves from having to waste time walking to the lounhe. Etc

Because many school don't have enough convenient refrigerators for all the teachers. We only have 25 minutes to eat and get ready to go back to teaching. There is not enough time to walk across the building to warm up our food.

Both sides have a point here. I bet the county spends goo-gobs on Leeds certifications while wasting more on inefficiency. Not blaming teachers for wanting to keep their baloney cool, just saying there might be an alternative.

It's not horribly inefficient. It's a heat pump mostly. There are likely bigger energy wasters like failure to use sleep mode on monitors and such. Those are converting electricity to heat that has to be rejected somewhere.

The point is that those cheap little fridges use tons more energy than a few big ones. They're cheap with much less insulation than a fullsize fridge, and multiple fridges have more surface area than one big one. It's like air-conditioning a bunch of cars vs one well-insulated house.

No way in hell do modern computer monitors use anywhere near as much power as a fridge.

Those mini fridges that do not have a visible condenser coil reject heat through the exterior walls of the fridge are horribly inefficient. They use more energy in a year than a full size kitchen refrigerator. The energy consumption is even higher when they are not defrosted regularly. These teachers are costing us thousands of dollars per year per school! I am not one to complain about education costs but this mini fridge thing is a legitimate gripe!

Have you ever tried to share a fridge at work with dozens of co-workers? Most of the high schools have over 200 teachers, let alone the office staff. I have. It is a mess.

The elementary schools can have 30+ teachers, plus office and other support staff.

I don't blame them, actually. At least they are packing their meals instead of expecting the school system and taxpayers to provide them lunch every day on the public dime. This way we just have to feed administrators, who send out for takeout with reckless abandon, and routinely have "working" breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. All paid for by us. Look at the bright side.

I'm sure every school board member has a personal fridge as do the gatehouse administrators. Be grateful more tax money is not being wasted here.

A catered simple lunch for 300 easily costs $3000+. There are lots of those.
A "working lunch" for the Main Office sets us back several hundred dollars. There are lots of those.
A "dinner meeting" at Morton's for the principals sets us back over $100 a person. That's been done.

Hell, maybe if every single staff member in FCPS had their own fridge, we could save a bundle.

Damn, you are right about that! Along with Santini's in Oakton, the Corner Bakery, Artie's, etc.etc.etc. The restaurants in Northern Virginia would definitely suffer.

A teacher might be expected to do this. But certainly not Superintendent Dr. Karen Garza, what with her housing allowance and all, and certainly not Dr. Angela Atwater, holder of an online Ed.D. degree, who would tell you the refrigerator issue is closed.

Okay FCPS has 196 schools. A very conservative estimate of energy use from mini fridges would be $2500 a year per school. Thats $490,000 a year to power those those things at a absolute minimum!
Sounds like we should ban those things or charge the teachers a estimated energy use fee and deduct it from their pay.

So you are figuring like 50 fridges at $50 each a year per school? Some might have more, some less. The high schools might have more, for example.

That is some major cash. Half a million dollars. Do a fraud and abuse complaint. Waste of resources.

The window unit air conditioners have been running nonstop all summer in 4 outside trailers/double wides at my neighborhood elementary school. I walked past almost every day. There were no students or other activities taking place in these supplemental classroom buildings. If that was the norm for every school it is a huge expense.

Fridges- a possible reason is diabetics who need their insulin kept. Or other medications that need to be kept cold (students or teachers). They won't tell you that due to HIPPA.

A/C on- sensitive electronics in the house. Do you not leave your own house AC on in the summer and just turn it down? They probably have timers of some sort.

I would yell "Think, people!" but I forgot I was on FFU. So carry on being silly.

Insulin that is at rm temp keeps 28 days pal. Its kept in a fridge for longer time storage and if theres drugs in that fridge there better be a big ass lock on it too.

Students that need drugs?? Teachers don't give them out, Ever heard of the school nurse?? In a room with a lock and a fridge.

I'll make you a deal. You can have my mini-fridge. I'll get it right out of my classroom, and you can save the $60 or $85 or whatever it is that it costs Fairfax County taxpayers a year.

Oh, and BTW, when you email me on Friday night and I respond Saturday morning--I'm taking that away too. When you email me and say your kid is having trouble and I sit with him during lunch to work on some math--that's gone as well. The before and after school help sessions outside of contract hours--those are gone too. Me working late in the afternoon to make better lessons or do paperwork--yeah, that's history.

I do all those things all the time. The people I teach with do those things as well. Do all teachers do that stuff? Not all of them, and those that do don't do them all of the time. But a lot do, and those of us who do like our mini-fridges.

Your call.

I have never had a mini-fridge in my classroom. I would bet that most people who do turn them off over breaks. We are reminded to turn off things for the long breaks with an energy saver checklist at those times.

My concern is with teachers who have coffee machines in their classrooms, especially in elementary classrooms. Kids can get burned by hot water. I don't see any reason to have a coffee machine in a classroom. We have a teachers' lounge, although it is so dismal people don't want to sit in it, but that is a much safer place for hot water.

The poster who said FCPS does not provide the mini fridges is correct. Teachers buy them with their own money. Only a small handful of teachers in my building have them and they fall into a couple categories: Those who teach in self-contained Special Ed classrooms, which means they usually spend their lunch time returning phone calls and emails or filling out tons of paperwork. They keep their food in their own fridges and I don't begrudge them that. They share the fridges with the IAs and Public Health Assistants who also work in those classrooms. That crowd works ridiculously hard and the assistants don't get paid much for what they do (a lot of it is quite literally shit work in some schools). The other group is the young mom teachers who pump milk during the day and need to refridgerate it. They don't want to leave it in the lounge fridge where it could be accidentally thrown out, spilled, or contaminated and I don't blame them.

If you're going to insult someone, at least use correct spelling and punctuation.

If you want to prove your stupidity, make two separate posts whining about an accidental, one word, punctuation error. Clearly, your writing is deficient and could use significant improvement as it is niether clear nor concise. Next time, try to get your shit together and express your thoughts in one post. Stop being a redundant asshole.

another deal with asians in annandale i assume

just like the deals to use asian cars and to favor mexicans and employees who take loans for school and loans for asian cars (most all of their employees: both)

the growth of asian car dealers and sharon bulova democrats: NOT A COINCIDENCE

refridgerators in schools when schools didn't used to have air conditioning

MADE IN ASIA (OR MEXICO) MOST ASSUREDLY

Bulova would NEVER enter that contract if the mini-fridges were Made in USA
