Adults win

A year or two ago, VA decided it would be a great idea to let K-8 kids re-test to pass SOLs. Why? Kids don't need them to be promoted and doing this makes cross-division comparisons less comparable because they'll be skewed by re-take participation differences - oh not to mention, why would you want to put kids thru this - pulling the "failures" out of class to re-take something meaningless to them?
Well, the adults may benefit from higher pass rates.

Now, accreditation changes have been made which will keep poor-performing schools accredited until after the current gov leaves office. How nice for the adults who may be evaluated based on school performance.

Legislation passed by the 2016 General Assembly (Senate Bill 368) directed the Board of Education to review the accreditation status of a school once every three years, rather than annually, if the school had been fully accredited for the previous three years. The revised language in § 22.1-253.13:3 of the Standards of Quality (SOQ) resulting from this legislation is provided below.

“The Board shall review annually the accreditation status of all schools in the Commonwealth. The Board shall review the accreditation status of a school once every three years if the school has been fully accredited for three consecutive years. Upon such triennial review, the Board shall review the accreditation status of the school for each individual year within that triennial review period. If the Board finds that the school would have been accredited every year of that triennial review period the Board shall accredit the school for another three years.”
Because this legislation went into effect on July 1, 2016, schools that were fully accredited in 2013-2014, 2014-2015, and 2015-2016 will continue to be rated as fully accredited for 2016-2017, 2017-2018, and 2018-2019.
